Current popular Internet audio streaming solutions impose a division between source coding (provided, for example, by MPEG layer III) and channel coding, typically accomplished in the server by means of packet re-transmission. A novel joint source and channel coder that provides packet-loss recovery and continuous bitrate scalability is presented. These functionalities are well suited to streaming audio over third and future generation wireless broadband networks.

A spatial perception based scalable audio coding in audio surveillance is presented in this paper. Sudden events in audio surveillance are often accompanied with high energy, fast changing energy or sound location. Current priority schemes of scalable audio coding are mainly based on the energy criterion or perception importance criterion, in which priorities are assigned according to high energy or low frequency which are more sensitive to auditory sensation. According to the energy and spatial cues in different frequency bands, this paper assigns the priorities to the sub-bands with fast changing location and energy of sound source in scalable audio coding. With zero extra side information and trivial added complexity, experimental results show that the perceptual quality is improved especially for the sound with high attention in audio surveillance.

Joint Optimization of Base and Enhancement Layers in scalable audio coding

Current scalable audio coders typically optimize performance at a particular layer without regard to impact on other layers, and are thus unable to provide a performance trade-off between different layers. In the particular case of MPEG scalable Advanced audio coding (S-AAC) and scalable-to-Lossless (SLS) coding, the base-layer is optimized first followed by successive optimization of higher layers, which ensures optimality of the base-layer but results in a scalability penalty that progressively increases with the enhancement layer index. The ability to trade-off performance between different layers enables alignment to the real world requirement for audio quality commensurate with the bandwidth afforded by a user. This work provides the means to better control the performance tradeoffs, and the distribution of the scalability penalty, between the base and enhancement layers. Specifically, it proposes an efficient joint optimization algorithm that selects the encoding parameters for each layer while accounting for the rate-distortion costs in all layers. The efficacy of the technique is demonstrated in the two distinct settings of S-AAC, and SLS High Definition Advanced audio coding. Objective and subjective tests provide evidence for substantial gains, and represent a significant step toward bridging the gap with the non-scalable coder.

A spatial priority scheme for scalable audio coding is presented in this paper. To improve the coding quality of important sounds with high attention, especially the moving sound, spatial information is introduced to assign the priorities of frequency subbands. Spatial cues and distance features are extracted in frequency subbands to represent the sound with fast changing direction and distance. coding priorities are assigned to different frequency subbands according to the energy and spatial information. With trivial added side information and complexity, experimental results show that the perceptual quality is improved especially for the sound with high attention, especially the moving sound in scalable audio coding.

In scalable audio coders, such as the MPEG-4 SLS, error-mapping is used to map quantization errors in the core coder to an error signal before passing through bit-plane coding. In this paper, we propose a new error-mapping scheme that is derived by observing statistical properties of the error signal. Compared with the error-mapping in SLS, the proposed scheme improves coding efficiency as well as computational complexity of the coder. An average improvement of 9 points in MUSHRA score has been achieved by the proposed scheme in subjective listening tests. The proposed error-mapping adds a useful new tool to the existing toolset for constructing next-generation scalable audio coders.

Considering the properties of the residual signal, core-based bit-plane probabilities are provided for MPEG-4 audio scalable to Lossless coding (SLS), which matches the quantization and coding performed in the core layer. Using the same strategy, new probabilities are obtained to consider the clipping effect in bit-plane coding of an unbounded signal, which is useful for non-core mode of SLS coding. Simulations show that considering the core layer parameters and the clipping effect improve the bit-plane probabilities estimation compared to the existing method.

A simple and flexible bit-plane coding method is developed for scalable audio coding. It is different from the traditional bit-plane coding in that the optimal bit-plane scanning order is adapted to the scale between the energy of the residual signal and the audio mask. Both the perceptual quality and the lossless compression ratio at common lossy bitrates are greatly improved compared with the performance of state-of-the-art scalable audio.

scalable coders generate hierarchically layered bitstreams to serve content at different quality levels, wherein the base layer provides a coarse quality reconstruction and successive layers incrementally refine the quality. However, it is widely recognized that there is an inherent performance penalty due to the scalable coding structure, when compared to independently encoded copies. To mitigate this loss we propose a layered compression framework, having roots in information theoretic concepts, which relaxes the strict hierarchical constraints, wherein only a "subset" of the information of a lower quality level is shared with higher quality levels. In other words, there is flexibility to also have "private" information at each quality level, beside information that is common to multiple levels. We employ this framework within the MPEG scalable AAC and propose an optimization scheme to jointly select parameters of all the layers. Experimental evaluation results demonstrate the utility of the flexibility provided by the proposed framework.
