Lossless video coding is required in the fields of archiving and editing digital cinema or digital broadcasting contents. This paper combines a discrete wavelet transform and adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction in the wavelet transform domain to create multiresolution lossless video coding. The multiresolution structure offered by the wavelet transform facilitates interchange among several video source formats such as Super High Definition (SHD) images, HDTV, SDTV, and mobile applications. Adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction is an extension of JPEG-LS, a state-of-the-art lossless still image compression standard. Based on the image statistics of the wavelet transform domains in successive frames, inter/intra frame adaptive prediction is applied to the appropriate wavelet transform domain. This adaptation offers superior compression performance. This is achieved with low computational cost and no increase in additional information. Experiments on digital cinema test sequences confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Advances in video coding and networking technologies have paved the way for the Multi-View Video (MVV) streaming. However, large amounts of data and dynamic network conditions result in frequent network congestion, which may prevent video packets from being delivered on time. As a consequence, the 3D viewing experience may be degraded significantly, unless quality-aware adaptation methods are deployed. There is no research work to discuss the MVV adaptation of decision strategy or provide a detailed analysis of a dynamic network environment. This work addresses the mentioned issues for MVV streaming over HTTP for emerging multi-view displays. In this research work, the effect of various adaptations of decision strategies are evaluated and, as a result, a new quality-aware adaptation method is designed. The proposed method is benefiting from layer based video coding in such a way that high Quality of Experience (QoE) is maintained in a cost-effective manner. The conducted experimental results on MVV streaming using the proposed strategy are showing that the perceptual 3D video quality, under adverse network conditions, is enhanced significantly as a result of the proposed quality-aware adaptation.

Robust and flexible speech codecs are required more and more by speech communication over unreliable and heterogeneous channels such as the internet. In this paper, a novel multiple description scalable codec is proposed, which is based on the sinusoidal model and equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB) noise model. It combines the advantages of scalable coding and multiple descriptions coding (MDC), and provides relatively high transmission reliability and rate adaptation. The lost packet does not affect the state recovery of this state-less codec. The performance of the proposed codec was evaluated under memory and memoryless channels. Analytical and experimental results show that it is suitable to unreliable and band limited channel such as internet.

This paper proposes a novel framework for the compression and transmission of the auto-stereo video. Based on the video-plus-depth data representation, this framework provides high adaptability, reliability and flexibility for the stereo display. Besides, it also permits the consumers to be interactive with the perception of the stereo video. The proposed compression approach for the video-plus-depth data representation utilizes the characteristics of the human vision system and reduces data amount effectively. The transmission approach, in combination with the data hiding technology and the effective coding algorithm, performs well in our framework. Both the early experiments of our research group and the theory analysis of the coding algorithm can guarantee the performance of the whole framework for the compression and transmission of the auto-stereo video. Technical challenges are identified in the end.

dPeer-to-peer networks (P2P) form a distributed communication infrastructure that is particularly well matched to video streaming using multiple description coding. We form M descriptions using MDC-FEC building on a scalable version of the "Dirac" video coder. The M descriptions are streamed via M different application layer multicast (ALM) trees embedded in the P2P network. Client nodes (peers in the network) receive a number of descriptions m < M that is dependent on their bandwidth. In this paper we consider the optimization of the received video qualities, taking into account the distribution of the clients' bandwidth. We propose three "fairness" criteria to define the criterion to be optimized. Numerical results illustrate the effects of the different fairness criteria and client bandwidth distributions on the rates allocated to the compressed video layers and multiple descriptions.

This communication presents the recently standardized superwideband (SWB) extensions of ITU-T G.718 and G.729.1. These extensions were standardized as G.718 annex B and G.729.1 annex E. The SWB functionality is implemented using embedded scalable layers on top of the wideband (WB) core codecs, and it extends the bit rate of the codecs to 48 and 64 kbit/s for the G.718 and G.729.1, respectively. The main technology is a two-mode SWB coding method of the high frequencies. In addition, the G.729.1 SWB extension enhances the lower frequency range. The codec performance is illustrated with some listening test results extracted from the ITU-T Characterization phase.

Semantic communications are expected to be an innovative solution to the emerging intelligent applications in the era of connected intelligence. In this paper, a novel scalable multi-task semantic communication system with feature importance ranking (SMSC-FIR) is explored. Firstly, the multi-task correlations are investigated by a joint semantic encoder to extract relevant features. Then, a new scalable coding method is proposed based on feature importance ranking, which dynamically adjusts the coding rate and guarantees that important features for semantic tasks are transmitted with higher priority. Simulation results show that SMSC-FIR achieves performance gain w.r.t. individual intelligent tasks, especially in the low SNR regime. © 2023 IEEE.

For bit-plane coding of random source, we establish a relationship between the probability density function of an arbitrary non-negative distribution and the bit-plane symbol probability. Applied to Laplacian source, the relationship gives a simple, closed form of bit-plane symbol probability, which is a superset of the probability assignment rule adopted in the MPEG-4 Audio scalable Lossless coding (SLS) international standard. For bit-plane arithmetic coding of Laplacian source, we propose an algorithm and apply it to MPEG-4 SLS. Experimental results show that without changing the encoder/decoder complexity, the proposed algorithm consistently improved the compression ratio over SLS for all the 51 MPEG test sequences. The overall improvement in the compression ratio is 0.11%.
