Embedded system architecture, which call be used for scalable and object-based video coding, is discussed in this paper. As for scalable video coding, namely JPEG2000, design framework for system architecture is Constructed with the main theme focused oil the ability of exploring implementation scheme for each process of JPEG2000 encoding. In order to demonstrate the practicability of the framework, a JPEG2000 encoder LSI has been implemented by using 0.18 mu m CMOS technology, which consists of two hardware modules and a configurable processor. This paper also describes real-time human object extraction algorithm, which call be used for video phone. Software simulation result of face and hair object extraction with the use of XScale processor claims that QCIF 15fps video call be processed in real-time.

A basic premise in scalable human-machine coding is that the base layer is intended for automated machine analysis and is therefore more compressible than the same content would be for human viewing. Use cases for such coding include video surveillance and traffic monitoring, where the majority of the content will never be seen by humans. Therefore, base layer efficiency is of paramount importance because the system would most frequently operate at the base-layer rate. In this paper, we analyze the coding efficiency of the base layer in a state-of-the-art scalable human-machine image codec, and show that it can be improved. In particular, we demonstrate that gains of 20-40% in BD-Rate compared to the currently best results on object detection and instance segmentation are possible.

The scalable image coding is an important objective of the future image coding technologies. In this paper, we present a kind of scalable image coding scheme based on wavelet transform. This method uses the famous EZW (Embedded Zero tree Wavelet) algorithm;we give a high-quality encoding to the ROI (region of interest) of the original image and a rough encoding to the rest. This method is applied well in limited memory space condition, and we encode the region of background according to the memory capacity. In this way, we can store the encoded image in limited memory space easily without losing its main information. Simulation results show it is effective.

This paper considers the problem of scalable distributed coding of correlated sources that are communicated to a central unit. The general setting is typically encountered in sensor networks. The conditions of communication channels between the source encoders and fusion center may be time-varying and it is often desirable to guarantee a base layer of coarse information during channel fades. In addition the desired system should be robust to various scenarios of channel failure and should utilize all the available information to attain the best possible compression efficiency. Although a standard 'Lloyd-style' distributed coder design algorithm can be generalized to scalable distributed source coding, the resulting algorithm depends heavily on initialization and will virtually always converge to a poor local minimum on the distortion-cost surface. We propose an efficient initialization scheme for such a system, which employs a properly designed multi-stage distributed coder. In our prior work, we highlighted the fundamental conflict that arises when multi-stage coding is directly combined with distributed quantization. Here we use the multi-stage distributed coding system to initialize a scalable distributed coder and propose an iterative algorithm for joint design of all system components once the structural constraint is removed. Simulation results show considerable gains over randomly initialized scalable distributed coder design.

Many applications of point cloud have recently been identified in automobile navigation system, visual communication, and so on. However, the huge data size of point cloud has been a bottleneck for the practical implementations. In this paper, we present a compression scheme that utilizes variable rate coding of a same point cloud data at different quality. Point cloud is encoded at fixed-rate for highest representation. Encoder, however, can present variable-rate encoded data for any lowest to highest representation to decoder which is then decoded to reconstruct point cloud at different quality. Variable-rate encoding is achieved through the so-called binary tree quadtree (BTQT) scheme. The BTQT scheme made the compression more effective by dividing point cloud frame into blocks using binary-tree and encoding flat surfaces in the blocks by quadtree and non-flat surfaces by octree. Simulation results show that scalable coding solution can efficiently compress point cloud data at variable rate compensating the quality.

This paper presents a new algorithm for reducing aliasing artifacts related to the conventional spatial scalable subband/wavelet coding for recovering video at lower resolution. The proposed scheme has been fully integrated with the H.264/AVC JSVM reference software and experimentally evaluated against the conventional methods for intraframe spatial scalable video coding. The simulation results show our method can effectively remove the aliasing artifacts for scalable decoding at lower resolution without performance penalty at full resolution.

Former research on perceptual image coding was mainly developed in the traditional sequential coding frame-work, where the codestream is neither rate nor resolution scalable. In this paper, our earlier embedded subband/wavelet image coding algorithm EZBC is further developed for highly scalable image coding applications. Special attention is given to perceptual image coding under varying viewing/display conditions - a common situation in typical scalable coding application environments. Unlike the conventional perceptual image coding approach, all the perceptually coded images (individually targeted at particular viewing conditions) are decoded from a single compressed bitstream file. The experimental results show the bitrate savings by the proposed algorithm are significant, particularly for coding of high-definition (HD) images.

We propose an efficient coding scheme for a dense light field, i.e., a set of multi-viewpoint images taken with very small viewpoint intervals. The key idea behind our proposal is that a light field is represented only using weighted binary images, where several binary images and corresponding weight values are to be chosen to optimally approximate the light field. The coding scheme derived from this idea is completely different from those of modern image/video coding standards. However, we found that our scheme can achieve comparable coding efficiency (rate-distortion performance) to that of modern highly-sophisticated video codecs. Moreover, the decoding process of our scheme is extremely simple, which will lead to a faster and less power-hungry decoder than those of the modern codecs. Furthermore, our scheme can be made scalable, where the accuracy of the decoded light field is improved in a progressive manner as we use more encoded information. Thanks to the divide-and-conquer strategy adopted for the scalable coding, we can also drastically reduce the computational complexity of the encoding process.

This paper describes a novel scalable 3D triangular mesh coding method based on wavelet transform and successive approximation quantization. The algorithm efficiently exploits the intracorrelations between wavelet coefficients independently in each subband. Non-significant wavelet coefficients are clustered, in a per bit-plane manner, by using an octree-based approach. An hierarchical bitstream is then generated allowing to gradually decode the 3D mesh at the desired quality or resolution representation. Our proposal can be executed on arbitrary topology meshes by using irregular wavelet decomposition. Objective and subjective quality evaluation on representative 3D meshes shows that the proposed codec provides competitive compression results when compared to the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, it fits well to applications that require fast interactive handling of highly detailed 3D meshes, over networks with limited and/or variable bandwidth.

We propose a wavelet-based codec for the static depth-image-based representation, which allows viewers to freely choose the viewpoint. The proposed codec jointly estimates and encodes the unknown depth map from multiple views using a novel rate-distortion (RD) optimization scheme. The rate constraint reduces the ambiguity of depth estimation by favoring piece-wise-smooth depth maps. The optimization is efficiently solved by a novel dynamic programming along trees of integer wavelet coefficients. The codec encodes the image and the depth map jointly to decrease their redundancy and to provide a RD-optimized bitrate allocation between the two. The codec also offers scalability both in resolution and in quality. Experiments on real data show the effectiveness of the proposed codec.
