In 2007, the ITU-T H.264 | ISO/IEC MPEG-4 AVC standard was extended to support temporal, spatial and fidelity (SNR) scalability in a framework that is referred to as scalable video coding (SVC). Since the development of this SVC extension, its use has been proposed for several applications. It seems however there is not yet a broadly agreed understanding about the benefits of SVC compared to non-scalable coding. In this paper, we describe coding efficiency gain and cost measures for scalable video against non-scalable simulcast, and single layer non-scalable coding, respectively, in the context of video delivery to heterogeneous terminals. Our results show that the cost and gain from SVC are strongly dependent on the application and conditions. Specifically, it is shown that while SVC can theoretically provide promising gain in some applications, its cost is not negligible and in some cases this cost can outweigh the gain. © 2012 ICST Institute for Computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Performance analysis of scalable video transmission in machine-type-communication caching network

In this article, different from the traditional Device-to-Device caching wireless cellular networks, we consider the scalable video coding performance in cache-based machine-type communication network, where popular videos encoded by scalable video coding method can be cached at machine-type devices with limited memory space. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of the caching hit probability using stochastic geometry, which measures the probability of requested video files cached by nearby local devices and the user satisfaction index, which is essential to delay sensitive video streams. Simulation results prove the derivation of the performance metrics to be correct, using Random cache method and Popularity Priority cache method. It is also demonstrated that scalable video coding-based caching method can be applied according to different user requirements as well as video-type requests, to achieve a better performance.

Controllable Multicast for Adaptive scalable video Streaming in Software-Defined Networks

scalable video coding is a promising technique to enable flexible video transmission for heterogeneous terminals and varying channel throughput. However, it is challenging to perform in-network adaptation in conventional networks because the network nodes are uncontrollable and transparent for media streaming applications. Software-defined networking (SDN) is an attractive network technology that supports the applications to collaborate with network nodes to achieve intelligent and dynamic service provisioning. Against this changing network landscape, we redesign the scalable multimedia multicast streaming by exploiting the complete network knowledge of the SDN controller to enable intelligent scalable video transmission. The proposed scalable multimedia multicast streaming framework is capable of in-network identifying, processing, and manipulating the media streams. In order to achieve the in-network adaptation, we apply equivalent bandwidth theory to estimate the affordable video layers that a link may accommodate, and apply finite-state machine to implement adaptive enhancement layer switching for multicast paths. In contrast to IP multicast, the proposed method is a controllable multicast scheme, which provides admission control in a multicast context, in-network adaptation, and supporting heterogeneous devices having different display capability. We further implement a prototype for illustrating the success of the proposed solution. The experimental results are also presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed equivalent bandwidth based adaptive enhancement layer switching algorithm.

Dynamic Resource Allocation and Layer Selection for scalable video Streaming in Femtocell Networks: A Twin-Time-Scale Approach

scalable video streaming over femtocell networks relying on two-tier spectrum-sharing is designed for coping with time-varying channel conditions, stringent video QoS requirements as well as with strong cross-tier interference between the over-sailing macro- and the femtocells. Dynamic video layer selection and resource allocation are invoked to enable the adaptation of the scalable video streaming service to the dynamics of both channel quality and interference price fluctuations. We formulate the design as a constrained stochastic optimization problem, which strikes a compelling compromise between the perceivable quality of experience and the monetary implications of the interference. Since the time scale of resource allocation is more short term than that of the video layer selection, we decompose the original long-term utility optimization problem into a pair of readily tractable subproblems with the aid of two different time-scales by invoking the powerful technique of Lyapunov drift and optimization. By exploiting the specific structure of these subproblems, low-complexity algorithms are derived for dynamic video layer selection and resource allocation, which rely on the near-instantaneously available information rather than on any prior statistical knowledge. Finally, we derive the analytical hounds of the theoretically achievable performance. Experimental results are presented for characterizing the performance attained.

LBP: Robust Rate Adaptation Algorithm for SVC video Streaming

video streaming today accounts for up to 55% of mobile traffic. In this paper, we explore streaming videos encoded using scalable video coding (SVC) scheme over highly variable bandwidth conditions, such as cellular networks. SVC's unique encoding scheme allows the quality of a video chunk to change incrementally, making it more flexible and adaptive to challenging network conditions compared to other encoding schemes. Our contribution is threefold. First, we formulate the quality decisions of video chunks constrained by the available bandwidth, the playback buffer, and the chunk deadlines as an optimization problem. The objective is to optimize a novel quality-of-experience metric that models a combination of the three objectives of minimizing the stall/skip duration of the video, maximizing the playback quality of every chunk, and minimizing the number of quality switches. Second, we develop layered bin packing (LBP) adaptation algorithm, a novel algorithm that solves the proposed optimization problem. Moreover, we show that LBP achieves the optimal solution of the proposed optimization problem with linear complexity in the number of video chunks. Third, we propose an online algorithm (online LBP) where several challenges are addressed, including handling bandwidth prediction errors and short prediction duration. Extensive simulations with real bandwidth traces of public datasets reveal the robustness of our scheme and demonstrate its significant performance improvement as compared with the state-of-theart SVC streaming algorithms. The proposed algorithm is also implemented on a TCP/IP emulation test bed with real LTE bandwidth traces, and the emulation confirms the simulation results and validates that the algorithm can be implemented and deployed on today's mobile devices.

Adaptive multicast streaming for videoconferences on software-defined networks

Real-time applications, such as video conferences, have strong Quality of Service requirements for ensuring a decent Quality of Experience. Nowadays, most of these conferences are performed over wireless devices. Thus, an appropriate management of both heterogeneous mobile devices and network dynamics is necessary. Software Defined Networking enables the use of multicasting and stream layering inside the network nodes, two techniques able to enhance the quality of live video streams. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for building and maintaining multicast sessions in a software-defined network. The first algorithm sets up the initial multicast trees for a given call. It optimally places the stream layer adaptation function inside the core network in order to minimize the bandwidth consumption. This algorithm has two versions: the first one, based on shortest path trees is minimizing the latency, while the second one, based on spanning trees is minimizing the bandwidth consumption. The second algorithm adapts the multicast trees according to the network changes occurring during a call. It does not recompute the trees, but only relocates the stream layer adaptation functions. It requires very low computation at the controller, thus making our proposal fast and highly reactive. Extensive simulation results confirm the efficiency of our solution in terms of processing time and bandwidth savings compared to existing solutions such as multiple unicast connections, Multipoint Control Unit solutions and application layer multicast.

scalable video coding (SVC) streaming multicast is considered as a promising solution to cope with video traffic overload and multicast channel differences. To solve the challenge of delivering high-definition SVC streaming over burst-loss prone channels, we propose a social-aware cooperative SVC streaming multicast scheme. The proposed scheme is the first attempt to enable D2D cooperation for SVC streaming multicast to conquer the burst-loss, and one salient feature of it is that it takes fully into account the hierarchical encoding structure of SVC in scheduling cooperation. By using our scheme, users form groups to share video packets among each other to restore incomplete enhancement layers. Specifically;a cooperative group formation method is designed to stimulate effective cooperation, based on coalitional game theory;and an optimal D2D links scheduling scheme is devised to maximize the total decoded enhancement layers, based on potential game theory. Extensive simulations using real video traces corroborate that the proposed scheme leads to a significant gain on the received video quality.

Antenna Allocation Scheme for Providing scalable video Coded Streams Over Multiple-Base-Station Massive MIMO Cellular Networks

Massive MIMO is a promising next-generation wireless access technology. By flexibly assigning different numbers of antennas among connections, the transmission rate can be adjusted according to user requirement and channel conditions. However, providing scalable-video-encoded (SVC) multimedia streams with such a technology is challenging because this cross-layer issue involves each user's allocated antennas as well as the assigned layers. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer scheme called Utility-Based Layer and Antenna Allocation (UB-LAA). Given each base station's available antennas and each user's channel conditions as well as their subscribed SVC stream, UB-LAA decides each layer's serving base station and transmitting antennas to maximize the system's total utility. Through analysis, we prove that this allocation problem is NP-complete, and our polynomial-time heuristic provides a bounded performance difference to the optimum solution. Simulation results indicated that, under various circumstances, UB-LAA flexibly allocates resources to reflect user requirements and channel conditions, and has a performance that is approximate to the optimal solution.

In this paper, we consider the time-varying characteristics of practical wireless networks, and propose a joint dynamic rate allocation and transmission scheduling optimization scheme for scalable video multirate multicast based on opportunistic routing (OR) and network coding. With OR, the decision of optimal routes for scalable video coding layered streaming is integrated into the joint optimization formulation. The network throughput is also increased by taking advantage of the broadcast nature of the wireless shared medium and by network coding operations in intermediate nodes. To maximize the overall video reception quality among all destinations, the proposed scheme can jointly optimize the video reception rate, the associated routes to different destinations, and the time fraction scheduling of transmitter sets that are concurrently transmitting in the shared wireless medium. By using dual decomposition and primal-dual update approach, we develop a cross-layer algorithm in a fully distributed manner. Simulation results demonstrate significant network multicast throughput improvement and adaptation to dynamic network changes relative to existing optimization schemes.

video streaming over vehicular networks has considerable benefits for both road safety and entertainment. In this paper, the scalable video coding over cooperative vehicular networks is investigated to improve the performance of video streaming services. We formulate a joint optimization problem to answer questions about the number of video layers that should be transmitted for each vehicle, the selection of relay vehicles to assist destination vehicles, and the assignment of radio resources to direct and cooperative communications. We decouple the problem into two subproblems, i.e., the quality of service (QoS)-driven resource allocation (QoSRA) subproblem and the layer selection (LS) sub-problem. We solve the QoSRA subproblem by converting it into a generalized maximum concurrent flow problem, and propose a tabu search-based metaheuristic algorithm for the LS subproblem. The simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed scheme and provide some insight into the tradeoff between system performance and computation complexity.
