A Distributed TDMA scheduling algorithm Using Topological Ordering for Wireless Sensor Networks

In distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs), TDMA protocols are a widely applied solution when a reliable data-transferring mechanism is in demand. However, to produce a TDMA schedule is not an easy task. During the scheduling, there can be a large number of conflicts due to the nature of radio access, which leads to a waste of operating time and energy. In this paper, we first present and discuss the concept of Topological Ordering, which is based mainly on the local neighborhood size. It is aimed to create an order of scheduling that helps reduce the competition and conflicts. Next, we propose a fast and effective distributed scheduling algorithm using Topological Ordering, called DSTO, to create a collision-free TDMA schedule. This algorithm is promising in terms of reducing running time and message collisions during the scheduling phase, which in turn reduces overall message overhead. At the same time, efficient time slot allocation, which translates to a shorter frame, is guaranteed. We implement DSTO together with two other distributed scheduling algorithms on OPNET Network Modeler and thoroughly analyze the comparative results to prove its validity and effectiveness.

Information and communication technology (ICT) has a profound impact on environment because of its large amount of CO2 emissions. In the past years, the research field of "green" and low power consumption networking infrastructures is of great importance for both service/network providers and equipment manufacturers. An emerging technology called Cloud computing can increase the utilization and efficiency of hardware equipment. The job scheduler is needed by a cloud datacenter to arrange resources for executing jobs. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm for the cloud datacenter with a dynamic voltage frequency scaling technique. Our scheduling algorithm can efficiently increase resource utilization;hence, it can decrease the energy consumption for executing jobs. Experimental results show that our scheme can reduce more energy consumption than other schemes do. The performance of executing jobs is not sacrificed in our scheme. We provide a green energy-efficient scheduling algorithm using the DVFS technique for Cloud computing datacenters. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel scheduling algorithm for hybrid buffer structured optical packet switch

We propose a novel scheduling algorithm for the optical packet switch (OPS) with a hybrid buffer consisting of a fiber delay line (FDL) buffer and a shared electronic buffer, for contention resolution of asynchronous variable length packets. By employing the end of each channel together with the time intervals between the scheduled packets of each channel in the output line, simulation results showed that packet loss might be reduced significantly, resulting in a powerful reduction of the number of FDLs in the hybrid buffer. Also, the optimum number of electronic buffer inputs/outputs accompanied by O/E/O conversion was confirmed to be obtained for various loads. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The area of sustainable green smart computing highlights key challenges towards reducing cost and carbon dioxide emissions due to the high-energy consumption of Cloud data centres. Here, we focus on the Cloud virtual machine (VM) scheduling that is usually based on simple algorithms, e.g. VM placement on nodes with low memory usage. This approach fails to consider the actual configuration of nodes inside the server rack resulting in local overheating of Cloud data centres. To solve this, we propose a VM scheduling algorithm based on the gravitational effect, called VMSAGE, to optimize energy efficiency of Cloud computing systems. Inspired by the physical gravitation model, we define the thermal repulsion and logical gravitation factors between physical nodes and VMs. To achieve optimized VM scheduling, we propose a gravitation function that refers to the calculation of the logical quality of each VM, host and rack through the algorithm, so as to draw the attractiveness between them. Based on the concept of dimension reduction, VMSAGE conducts the two-dimensional plane target selection twice to reduce the computational cost. Additionally, VMSAGE evaluates attributes of the computer room to carry out the VM deployment. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution, we compare it with the Best Fit Heuristic (BFH) and the dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) algorithms. The results indicate that our algorithm achieves 10% and 20% optimized energy consumption respectively. The experimental results highlight our contribution, in where VMSAGE can significantly reduce energy consumption rates and VM migration times.

A novel multiple-channels scheduling algorithm based on timeslot optimization in the advanced orbiting systems

Multiple-channels data from satellite and unmanned aerial vehicles images have gained much attention. An advanced approach used in the advanced orbiting systems is to divide the space channels into multiple-channels, called virtual channels (VC), which are scheduled according to a special mechanism achieved through the feature learning of on-satellite models. Considering that the performance of the existing multiple-channels scheduling algorithm is not good enough and the buffer size is rarely considered, a novel multiple-channels scheduling algorithm based on timeslot optimization is presented and its performance under the finite buffer size is also studied. Firstly, an optimized timeslot assignment method is designed based on both the ratio of synchronous frames arrival rate to asynchronous frames arrival rate and the allowable maximum time delay of synchronous VC frames. Secondly, the periodical polling scheduling strategy is adopted to schedule the synchronous VCs at the synchronous timeslots. If there are no corresponding synchronous VC frames in a synchronous timeslot, another synchronous or asynchronous frame will be selected and scheduled according to the scheduling mechanism. Thirdly, a dynamic scheduling strategy based on the transmission urgency of VC is adopted to schedule the asynchronous VCs at the asynchronous timeslots. The research results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is much better than that of the other scheduling algorithms in terms of the time delay and channel utilization rate. The proposed multiple-channels scheduling algorithm for the finite buffer size is extensively studied and the upper bound of rate of frame-lost timeslots of each asynchronous VC is concluded.

A cross-layer scheduling algorithm with QoS support in wireless networks

scheduling plays an important role in providing quality of service (QoS) support to multimedia communications in various kinds of wireless networks, including cellular networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks. The authors propose a scheduling algorithm at the medium access control (MAC) layer for multiple connections with diverse QoS requirements, where each connection employs adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme at the physical (PHY) layer over wireless fading channels. Each connection is assigned a priority, which is updated dynamically based on its channel and service status;the connection with the highest priority is scheduled each time. The authors' scheduler provides diverse QoS guarantees, uses the wireless bandwidth efficiently,, and enjoys flexibility, scalability, and low implementation complexity. Its performance is evaluated via simulations.

An isochronous and asynchronous traffic scheduling algorithm for dual-star WDM networks

In this paper, based on the concept of wavelength reusing, a new architecture for interconnecting two wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) star networks is proposed, According to this architecture, the problem of scheduling isochronous as well as asynchronous traffic is investigated, The lower bounds for the problem of minimizing the switching duration and the number of switching modes are derived, A transmission scheduling algorithm for the proposed architecture to efficiently reuse the wavelength is also proposed, For only asynchronous traffic, the analytical result shows that the proposed scheduling algorithm produces solutions equal to the lower bounds, For both isochronous and asynchronous traffic, simulation results show that the average switching duration and the average number of switching modes obtained by the proposed algorithm are quite close to the lower bounds, Simulation results also show that given the same number of users and available wavelengths, the solutions (in terms of the average switching duration and the average number of switching modes) obtained by the proposed scheduling algorithm on the dual-star WDM networks are better than the solutions obtained by the two-phase algorithm [15] on the similar dual-star WDM networks.

This paper details on the uplink scheduling algorithm for long term evolution advanced （LTE-A） system with relays. While emulating quality of service （QoS）-aware services with different bit-rate and delay budget requirements for the upstream direction, a new QoS-aware scheduling algorithm for in-band relays is proposed. In this work, an improved scheduling metric calculation method and bit-rate guarantee scheme is applied. Moreover, this algorithm proposes an efficient scheme for the backhaul link allocation which allows information of the most backlogged users to be transmitted first. Finally, this paper concludes with simulation results to demonstrate how the proposed resource allocation strategy improves the performance of the system.

An application of a deterministic optimization algorithm in the hydrothermal scheduling of the large-scale Brazilian south-southeast interconnected system, composed of 51 hydro and 12 thermal plants and corresponding to 45 GW of installed capacity, is presented. The application considers the system operational conditions according to the 1986 Operational Plan coordinated by ELETROBRAS, the Brazilian electric holding company. The algorithm is based on a network flow approach especially developed for hydrothermal scheduling. For the south-southeast interconnected system, the problem formulation suggests a primal decomposition optimization approach. Two applications have been performed: in a study context, the system has been evaluated for the most critical stream flow ever recorded; in an operational context, the system has been simulated through an adaptive operational planning approach. The results show that the algorithm can be a useful tool for large-scale hydrothermal systems, giving insight into operational characteristics and/or adding to the guidance of real system operation.< >

An efficient message scheduling algorithm for WDM lightwave networks

Two important issues that need to be addressed when designing medium access control (MAC) protocols for Wavelength Division Multiplexing networks are message sequencing and channel assignment. Channel assignment addresses the problem of choosing an appropriate data channel via which a message is transmitted. This problem has been addressed extensively in the literature. On the other hand, message sequencing, which addresses the order in which messages are sent, has rarely been addressed. In this paper, we propose a new reservation-based message scheduling algorithm called RO-EATS that addresses both the channel assignment and message sequencing during its scheduling process. We formulate an analytical model and conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of this algorithm. We compare the performance results of a well-known algorithm which only addresses the channel assignment issue with those of our new algorithm. The comparison shows that our new algorithm gives significant improvement over scheduling algorithms that do not consider message sequencing. As a result, we anticipate that these research results will lead to new approaches to message scheduling on WDM networks. (C) 1999 published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
