Traditionally, switches make scheduling decisions oil the granularity of a packet. However, this is becoming increasingly difficult since network bandwidth is growing rapidly whereas packet sizes remain largely unchanged. Therefore the service time of an individual packet is decreasing rapidly. In this paper we study switches that make scheduling decisions on the granularity of an envelope which call be Much larger than a packet in size. For an output-queued switch with envelope size E, each Output Chooses One input every E time steps and transmits packets from this chosen input during the next E steps. For in input-queued switch with envelope size E. one matching from the inputs to the Outputs is Computed every E steps and only the input-output pairs that are defined by this matching are allowed to transmit packets during the next E steps. Traditional switches correspond to envelope size E = I and almost all previous scheduling work deals with this case exclusively. We first show how some stable protocols for scheduling networks of output-queued switches with E = I fail for arbitrary E when these protocols are generalized in the most straightforward manner. We then present all extremely simple protocol that does guarantee network stability for output-queued switches for any E greater than or equal to 1. For input-queued switches we first present a max-weight matching protocol that is stable for a single switch with arbitrary E. We then present a more complex protocol that achieves stability for a network of input-queued switches for any E greater than or equal to 1.

In this article, we analyze the stability of a linear control system where the plant and controller, both containing direct-feedthrough terms, communicate asynchronously over a network using scheduling protocols. The overall system is modeled as a hybrid dynamical system and sufficient conditions for its closed-loop stability are derived using a new Lyapunov function. Additionally, we define a stability property that is associated with the feedthrough terms and the adopted scheduling protocols and, subsequently, derive verifiable conditions that evaluate the aforementioned stability property. The effectiveness of the results is demonstrated through numerical simulations on a benchmark model, and the effects of user-specified parameters are examined.

Adaptive Neural State Estimation of Markov Jump Systems Under scheduling protocols and Probabilistic Deception Attacks

The neural-network (NN)-based state estimation issue of Markov jump systems (MJSs) subject to communication protocols and deception attacks is addressed in this article. For relieving communication burden and preventing possible data collisions, two types of scheduling protocols, namely: 1) the Round-Robin (RR) protocol and 2) weighted try-once-discard (WTOD) protocol, are applied, respectively, to coordinate the transmission sequence. In addition, considering that the communication channel may suffer from mode-dependent probabilistic deception attacks, a hidden Markov-like model is proposed to characterize the relationship between the malicious signal and system mode. Then, a novel adaptive neural state estimator is presented to reconstruct the system states. By taking the influence of deception attacks into performance analysis, sufficient conditions under two different scheduling protocols are derived, respectively, so as to ensure the ultimately boundedness of the estimate error. In the end, simulation results testify the correctness of the adaptive neural estimator design method proposed in this article.

This paper develops the time-delay approach to networked control systems in the presence of multiple sensor nodes, communication constraints, variable transmission delays, and sampling intervals. Due to communication constraints, only one sensor node is allowed to transmit its packet at a time. The scheduling of sensor information toward the controller is ruled by a weighted try-once-discard or by round-robin protocols. A unified hybrid system model under both protocols for the closed-loop system is presented;it contains time-varying delays in the continuous dynamics and in the reset conditions. A new Lyapunov-Krasovskii method, which is based on discontinuous in time Lyapunov functionals, is introduced for the stability analysis of the delayed hybrid systems. The resulting conditions can be applied to the system with polytopic type uncertainties. The efficiency of the time-delay approach is illustrated on the examples of uncertain cart-pendulum and of batch reactor.

We consider packet routing when packets are injected continuously into a network. We develop an adversarial theory of queuing aimed at addressing some of the restrictions inherent in probabilistic analysis and queuing theory based on time-invariant stochastic generation. We examine the stability of queuing networks and policies when the arrival process is adversarial, and provide some preliminary results in this direction. Our approach sheds light on various queuing policies in simple networks, and paves the way for a systematic study of queuing with few or no probabilistic assumptions.

A survey on sliding mode control for networked control systems

In the framework of the networked control systems (NCSs), the components are connected with each other over a shared band-limited network. The merits of NCSs include easy extensibility, resource sharing, high reliability and so forth. However, the insertion of the communication network brings many challenges, such as network-induced phenomena and cyber-security, which should be handled properly. On the other hand, the sliding mode control (SMC) has become an effective scheme for the synthesis of NCSs due to its strong robustness and SMC has wide applications in NCSs. In this paper, some recent advances on SMC for NCSs are reviewed. In particular, some new SMC schemes for NCSs subject to time-delay, packet losses, quantisation and uncertainty/disturbance are summarised firstly. Subsequently, the problem of SMC for NCSs under scheduling protocols is discussed, where different communication protocols are introduced for the energy saving purpose during the synthesis of NCSs. Next, some recent results on SMC for NCSs with actuator/sensor fault and cyber-attack are recalled. Finally, the conclusion is provided and the potential research challenges on SMC for NCSs are pointed out.

Stability analysis of networked linear control systems with direct-feedthrough terms

We consider networked control systems (NCSs) composed of a linear plant and a linear controller interconnected by packet-based communication channels with communication constraints. We are interested in the setup where direct-feedthrough terms are present in the plant and/or in the controller, a case that is largely ignored in the literature due to its inherent complexity and counterintuitive results in the analysis despite its relevance for important classes of controllers including Proportional-Integral (PI) regulators. This setup calls for a novel stability analysis, for which we take a renewed look at the concept of uniformly globally exponentially stable (UGES) scheduling protocols that turned out to be instrumental in earlier approaches. We provide a generalization of the UGES property, called (D-p, D-c)-UGES with D-p/D-c being the direct-feedthrough matrices of the plant/controller, respectively, and we present generic conditions on these direct-feedthrough terms D-p/D-c such that the classical UGES property of scheduling protocols implies (D-p, D-c)-UGES. This allows us to derive conditions leading to a maximally allowable transmission interval (MATI) such that stability of the overall NCS is guaranteed. In addition, it is shown that it is possible to get more tailored results for the well-known sampled-data (SD), round-robin (RR), and try once-discard (TOD) protocols leading to less conservative conditions on the direct-feedthrough terms than the generic ones. We also introduce new (D-p, D-c)-UGES scheduling protocols, designed to handle the direct-feedthrough terms in a more effective way than existing protocols. Decentralized networked control of discrete-time systems with local networks

This paper considers discrete-time large-scale networked control systems with multiple local communication networks connecting sensors, controllers, and actuators. The local networks operate asynchronously and independently of each other in the presence of variable sampling intervals, transmission delays, and scheduling protocols (from sensors to controllers). The time-delay approach that was recently suggested to decentralized stabilization of large-scale networked systems in the continuous time is extended to H decentralized control in the discrete time. An appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii method is presented that leads to efficient LMI conditions for the exponential stability and l(2)-gain analysis of the closed loop large-scale system. Differences from the continuous-time results are discussed. A numerical example of decentralized control of 2 coupled cart-pendulum systems illustrates the efficiency of the results.

Survey on time-delay approach to networked control

This paper provides a survey on time-delay approach to networked control systems (NCSs). The survey begins from a brief summary on fundamental network-induced issues in NCSs and the main approaches to the modelling of NCSs. In particular, a comprehensive introduction to time-delay approach to sampled data and networked control is provided. Then, recent results on time-delay approach to event-triggered control are recalled. The survey highlights time-delay approach developed to modelling, analysis and synthesis of NCSs, under communication constraints, with a particular focus on Round-Robin, Try-once-discard and stochastic protocols. The time-delay approach allows communication delays to be larger than the sampling intervals in the presence of scheduling protocols. Moreover, some results on networked control of distributed parameter systems are surveyed. Finally, conclusions and some future research directions are briefly addressed. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
