Palette mode is the new coding tool that has been adopted in the screen content coding Extensions of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC SCC). Palette mode can represent colour clusters for screen content efficiently and can be summarized into two parts: palette coding tools and colour index map coding tools. This paper proposes two techniques to improve colour index map coding: transition copy and prediction across coding unit boundary. The former is for exploring the correlation between an index and all of the previously coded indices;the latter for utilizing the correlation between the content along the coding unit boundary. Experimental results reportedly show that, compared with HEVC SCC, the proposed techniques can achieve 3.2%, 2.2%, and 1.7% BD-rate savings compared with HEVC SCC for "YUV, text & graphics with motion, 1080p & 720p sequences" under all intra, random access, and low-delay B common test conditions, respectively.

screen content coding (SCC) is the latest extension of the High-Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) aiming to improve the compression efficiency of screen content video. With newly developed tools such as intra block copy (IntraBC) and palette (PLT) mode, SCC has been able to compress the desktop screens more efficiently but with significant complexity increase. In this paper, we improve the intra prediction from two aspects. Firstly, by leveraging the temporal correlation among coding units (CU), we develop a fast CU depth prediction scheme. Furthermore, adaptive search step is employed for further speed up of the time-consuming block matching in IntraBC. The overall encoding time is reduced by about 39% and 35% for the All Intra (AI) lossy and lossless encoding scenarios with negligible quality loss under the SCC common test condition.

screen content coding (SCC) extension is currently being developed by Joint Collaborative Team on Video coding (JCT-VC), as the final extension for the latest High-Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard. It employs some new coding tools and algorithms (including palette coding mode, intra block copy mode, adaptive color transform, adaptive motion compensation precision, etc.), and outperforms HEVC by over 40% bitrate reduction on typical screen contents. However, enormous computational complexity is introduced on encoder primarily due to heavy optimization processing, especially rate distortion optimization (RDO) for coding Unit (CU) partition decision and mode selection. This paper proposes a novel machine learning based approach for fast CU partition decision using features that describe CU statistics and sub-CU homogeneity. The proposed scheme is implemented as a "pre-processing" module on top of the screen content coding reference software (SCM-3.0). Compared with SCM-3.0, experimental results show that our scheme can achieve 36.8% complexity reduction on average with only 3.0% BD-rate increase over 11 JCT-VC testing sequences when encoded using "All Intra" (AI) configuration.

screen content (SC) video coding becomes more important for screen sharing and screen broadcasting applications. There are many easy to see different characters between screen content video and camera-captured video. We proposed a template matching prediction method for lossless SC intra picture coding with higher compression ratio. The pixels are re-sampled to form the Virtual Largest coding Unit (VLCU) firstly. About 80% pixels in VLCU can be predicted exactly by template matching with zero error. Then, pixels with non-zero prediction error should be coded with three information, index, position and value. Among these three, position will consume the most bits than the other two. In order to handle this challenge, we propose to apply the similarity of non-zero prediction error pixel positions of neighbor VLCU which can greatly help to improve the compression performance. The VLCU can be divided into sub CU as the same as the division in the standard High Efficiency Video coding(HEVC) intra coding, and RDO is applied to find the best coding efficiency.

In the screen content coding extension for HEVC, intra block copy (IBC) was adopted to explore the redundancy between reduplicated patterns, which often occurs in a picture with screen contents. Besides reduplication, symmetry is also often observed in screen-content and even in natural pictures. In this paper, symmetric intra block copy (SIBC) is therefore proposed to further improve IBC. By flipping the reference block of IBC horizontally or vertically, SIBC may provide better predictions than IBC for symmetric patterns. Experimental results show that SIBC can achieve 1.2% and 1.9% coding gains in all intra configurations on sequences in the category of YUV, text & graphics with motion, 1080p for lossy and lossless coding respectively.

Mixed Chroma Sampling-Rate High Efficiency Video coding for Full-Chroma screen content

Computer screens contain discontinuous-tone content and continuous-tone content. Thus, the most effective way for screen content coding (SCC) is to use two essentially different coders: a dictionary-entropy coder and a traditional hybrid coder. Although screen content is originally in a full-chroma (e. g., YUV444) format, the current method of compression is to first subsample chroma of pictures and then compress pictures using a chroma-subsampled (e. g., YUV420) coder. Using two chroma-subsampled coders cannot achieve high-quality SCC, but using two full-chroma coders is overkill and inefficient for SCC. To solve the dilemma, this paper proposes a mixed chroma sampling-rate approach for SCC. An original full-chroma input macroblock (coding unit) or its prediction residual is chroma-subsampled. One full-chroma base coder and one chroma-subsampled base coder are used simultaneously to code the original and the chroma-subsampled macroblock, respectively. The coder minimizing rate-distortion (R-D) is selected as the final coder for the macroblock. The two base coders are coherently unified and optimized to get the best overall coding performance and share coding components and resources as much as possible. The approach achieves very high visual quality with minimal computing complexity increment for SCC, and has better R-D performance than two full-chroma coders approach, especially in low bitrate.

In this paper, we propose a scalable video coding (SVC) scheme for efficient coding of screen content videos while still providing the backward compatibility of HEVC (High Efficiency Video coding). By this means, the base layer is encoded as an HEVC-compatible bitstream while the enhancement layer is encoded with the proposed screen content coding (SCC) techniques for the support of screen content videos. For the enhancement layer, Base Colors plus Escape Colors (BCEC) approach is used in which a textual block is represented by base colors, escape colors and an index map. To further enhance the coding efficiency of enhancement layer, inter-layer intra prediction for BCEC is introduced by using index map differential coding and index map reuse techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve 8.0% bitrate reduction in average and up to 18.9% bitrate reduction for screen content video as compared with the conventional scalable HEVC.

screen content video coding is becoming increasingly important in various applications, such as desktop sharing, video conferencing, and remote education. In January 2014, the ITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG jointly issued call for proposals for screen content coding as an extension of HEVC. In general, compared to natural camera-captured video content, screen content has different characteristics, e.g., sharper edges, and fewer unique colors on a block-by-block basis. Palette coding for screen content has been recently proposed in the ongoing HEVC Range Extensions standardization. Palette coding utilizes the fact that there are few unique colors in screen content video blocks, and tries to send palettes of these unique colors. However, the size of these palettes can expand, especially in high-resolution video. Therefore, to reduce the overall bits for palette transmission, we present various palette prediction techniques in this paper. We first analyze the characteristics of palettes in screen content, and then propose various palette prediction techniques. Our experiments on HEVC test sequences in state-of-the-art HM range extensions software for HEVC show significant improvements over palette coding without any prediction, at almost negligible additional complexity.

Cloudlet-screen computing: a client-server architecture with top graphics performance

This paper presents a three-decoupling-boundary theory and classification for performance analysis of client-server architectures. Based on the analysis, a novel client-server architecture with top graphics performance is proposed. The client is only a display screen plus a few Human-Interface-Devices such as a mouse-keyboard-set or touchscreen with an optional mobile storage. The client is connected to a remote or nearby server (cloudlet) by a low latency link transferring primarily post-GPU display screen and HID data. By following exactly the same most-efficient CPU-GPU-screen graphics rendering pipeline from initial graphics primitives to final pixels as that in the traditional computer graphics architecture developed and optimised in the past decades, the architecture has higher graphics and multimedia performance than any other client-server and cloud-mobile computing architectures, e.g. VNC, Remote Desktop, VDI, Zero-client, and PCoIP. No read back of frame buffers as virtualised screen is necessary, so no CPU/GPU overhead occurs and display latency is minimised.
