screen content video gradually penetrates into all aspects of people's daily life due to the popularity of the emerging applications such as real-time video conferencing and online gaming with the rapid development of Internet. Thus, it is worth paying close attention to the compression and transmission of screen content video. It has been confirmed that intra block copy (IBC) is an effective coding technology for screen content coding (SCC). In this paper, we implement IBC with several key features on HPM3.2, which is the reference software platform of AVS3. Different simulation tests and performance analysis are also demonstrated. The experimental results show that IBC can greatly improve the coding performance with acceptable time complexity for SCC sequences in AVS3.

Competitive methods for lossless screen content coding are based on modelling of probability distributions. The most effective approach for losslessly compressing images with up to 90 000 colours is known as 'soft context formation' (SCF). It scans the image to be compressed for repeating patterns and creates corresponding colour histograms. This yields excellent compression results as long as the actual pattern-based histogram contains the colour of the next pixel to be processed. If this colour is not contained, an exception handling is required by sending a special non-colour symbol (escape). This paper proposes an enhanced version of this exception handling coding. Instead of only using a pattern-based estimation, the probability of the escape symbol is now additionally modelled based on local dependencies of exception events. The combination of both estimates leads to 2.0% decrease of bitrate. In comparison to FLIF, FP8v3, and HEVC (HM-16.20+SCM-8.8), the entire SCF method achieves savings of about 26%, 8%, and 12% on average for images with less than 90 000 different colours (for 720p format).

String Prediction (SP) is a special intra prediction mode for screen content coding, which can provide better coding efficiency while keeping lower coding complexity. In this paper, we present a string prediction-based improved algorithm to third-generation of the Audio Video coding Standard (AVS3) screen content coding (SCC). The main content is to use the string vector (SV) of history-based block vector prediction (HBVP) as string vector prediction (SVP), and obtain the best SV by comparing the rate-distortion (RD) cost, which comes from CU-level estimation search and pixel-level motion estimation search. SV is equal to the sum of SVP and string vector difference (SVD). While the encoder only needs to signal the SVD and the HBVP index to the decoder. The experiments show that with little coding complexity increases, the algorithm presented in this paper achieves an average Y BD-rate of -5.02% (TGM)/ -3.06% (MC), U BD-rate of -5.10% (TGM)/ -3.39% (MC), V BD-rate of -5.08% (TGM)/ -3.66% (MC) from AVS SCC common test condition (CTC) test suite in all intra configuration.

screen content video (SCV) is generated by computers, including texts, animation, and graphics. Unlike conventional camera-captured video, screen contents are often discontinuous, as some regions may remain static for successive frames. Therefore, the traditional hierarchical quantisation parameter (QP) setting scheme for conventional video may be not efficient enough for SCV. In this study, an improved hierarchical QP setting method is proposed for screen content coding. Based on the default hierarchical QP setting in high efficiency video coding (HEVC), the proposed method adjusts QP values at the coding tree unit level according to block matching and content complexity. Smaller QP is assigned to the static region and the translational region to reduce quality refinement, and bigger QP is assigned to the complex and limited quality propagated region to save bits. Experimental results show that compared with the default QP setting method in HEVC, the proposed method reduces up to 15.7% bitrate and 6.3% bitrate on average, and decreases the encoding time by 9.2% averagely.

Reduced-Complexity Intra Block Copy (IntraBC) Mode With Early CU Splitting and Pruning for HEVC screen content coding

A screen content coding (SCC) extension to high efficiency video coding has been developed to incorporate many new coding tools in order to achieve better coding efficiency for videos mixed with camera-captured content and graphics/text/animation. For instance, the Intra Block Copy (IntraBC) mode helps to encode repeating patterns within the same frame while the Palette mode aims at encoding screen content with a few major colors. However, the IntraBC mode brings along high computational complexity due to the exhaustive block matching within the same frame though there are already some constraints and fast approaches applied to the IntraBC mode to reduce its complexity. Thus, we propose a fast intracoding scheme to reduce the complexity of using the IntraBC mode in SCC. screen content always contains no sensor noise resulting in the characteristics with pixel exactness along both horizontal and vertical directions. These characteristics pave the way for mode skipping and early coding unit (CU) splitting. Besides, early CU pruning and early termination are proposed based on the rate distortion cost to further reduce encoder complexity. Moreover, we also propose reducing the complexity of the IntraBC mode by checking the hash value of each block candidate and the current block during block matching. With our proposed scheme, the encoding time is reduced compared with the SCC while the coding efficiency can still be maintained with a minor increase in the bjontegaard delta bitrate.

screen content coding (SCC) is the extension to high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) for compressing screen content videos. New coding tools, intrablock copy (IBC), and palette (PLT) modes, are introduced to encode screen content (SC) such as texts and graphics. The IBC mode is used for encoding repeating patterns by performing block matching within the same frame, while the PLT mode is designed for SC with few distinct colors by coding the major colors and their corresponding locations using an index map. However, the use of IBC and PLT modes increases the encoder complexity remarkably though coding efficiency can be improved. Therefore, we propose to have a mode skipping approach to reduce the encoder complexity of SCC by making use of SC characteristics, neighbor coding unit (CU) correlations, and intermediate cost information via random forest (RF). Detailed feature analyses and sample preparation are also described. A novel hyperparameter tuning approach with the consideration of coding bitrate and encoding time is proposed for RFs at each CU size to further boost the encoding process. Experimental results show that our proposed approach can obtain 45.06% average encoding time reduction with only a 1.08% increase in Bjontegaard delta bitrate. Average encoding time can even be reduced to 58.57% by regulating the hyperparameters.

With the complexity of the 5 G network environment and the diversified requirements for video transmission, multimedia content transmission in different channel environments is a direction worth studying in order to achieve good performance of digital media content transmission systems in an open network environment. Based on the code stream structure characteristics of screen content in HEVC, this paper has proposed a joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme to study the transmission of compressed video in wireless channels. Combined with the clustering algorithm from the field of artificial intelligence in the environment of wireless channel classification problem, the parameters of the wireless channel and the influencing factors can be used to reduce the noise and then use the FCM (Fuzzy C-Means) clustering algorithm to classify the channel environment. According to the channel status, optimize the current remaining resources and implement channel coding through LDPC codes. By analyzing and minimizing the end-to-end distortion model, the adaptive bit rate allocation further guarantees the quality of the reconstructed video. (C) 2020 The Authors. The screen content coding (SCC) is an extension of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC), and it achieves significant improvement on compression ratio. However, the obtained coding efficiency is at the cost of high computational complexity. In this paper, to reduce the computation complexity, we propose to use an ensemble classifier for predicting the coding unit (CU) in intra-coding. Firstly, the L1-loss based linear support vector machine (SVM) is employed as basic classifier for its simplicity. Then, a bagging scheme is applied to train the linear classifiers and boost the prediction accuracy by ensemble learning. Compared with the reference software SCM-5.0, the proposed scheme can achieve 30% complexity reduction on average with only 1.64% bit rates increase.

Intra block copy (IBC) in screen content coding (SCC) increases the coding efficiency of screen content (SC) by finding the repeating patterns within the same frame. A raw light field (LF) image contains plentiful repeating patterns since each microlens is capturing the same scene. SCC can be an efficient encoder for LF image compression. Therefore, first, we propose a new LF coding (LFC) model using SCC to encode LF images based on LF image characteristics. Second, a fast IBC search, which is specially designed for light field images, is proposed to reduce the encoder complexity. Experimental results show that our LFC model further improves the coding efficiency of SCC on LF images by 4.87% on average and up to 10.81% bitrate reduction. With our proposed LFC model, the encoded bitstreams are complaint to the SCC standard with even faster decoding time which is user friendly.

The distinguished features of screen contents lead to the development of the screen content coding (SCC) extension of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC). Intra coding of HEVC-SCC has to evaluate traditional HEVC intra coding modes and additional modes for screen contents, which poses a challenge for coding such a content on mobile devices. Furthermore, the heterogeneous mobile devices have varying complexity requirements. In this paper, a flexible screen content intra coding scheme is proposed, which can trade between encoding complexity and rate-distortion performance degradation via cost sensitive learning. Taking the cost of different decisions into account, binary classifiers are designed to determine whether a particular kind of coding modes will be evaluated. By adopting the cost-proportionate weighted sampling, the proposed scheme can learn a flexible coding policy offline via reinforcement learning. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
