Different from conventional video, screen content video often contains large movements and abrupt changes between adjacent frames. These distinct characteristics bring great challenges to the implementation of rate control in screen content coding (SCC). This paper proposes a novel rate control scheme for SCC considering the delay constraint. First, a pre-analyzer is designed to collect the information of the proceeding frames, which are about to be encoded. Then, after the information collection, more rational bit allocation strategy is adopted to keep the encoder from both buffer overflow and underflow. Furthermore, a delay constraint condition is derived for buffer and pre-analyzer to avoid additional delay. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves more accurate rate control accuracy and 3.10 dB gain on average when compared with the existing rate control scheme in HM-16.8+SCM-7.0.

screen content coding (SCC) is the extension of the latest video compression standard High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC). SCC is mainly developed for reducing the bit-rate of videos generated from computers. However, under inter configuration, SCC has large complexity which brings heavy burden to encoding. This paper proposes a content classification based reference frame reduction method and a non-square prediction unit (PU) skipping method to accelerate SCC. In reference frame reduction method, according to number of colors, input coding tree unit (CTUs) will be divided into two classes: natural contents and screen contents. For each class, reference frame can be reduced based on different standard. In PU partition skipping method, five features are extracted from a CTU. The classic learning tool SVM is used to classify CTUs, then six non-square PU partition in depth 1, 2, 3 can be skipped. Finally, 40.83% encoding time saving on average is achieved with only 0.71% BD-rate degradation compared with SCC reference software (SCM6.0).

Intra Block Copy (IBC) mode in a screen content coding (SCC) extension in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) provides high coding gain by performing motion estimation (ME) and motion compensation (MC) to find the repetitive patterns within the same frame. Merge mode and Advanced Motion Vector Prediction (AMVP), which are originally used for inter mode, are also applied to the IBC mode. However, there are redundant coding bits when they are applied to IBC. Therefore, we propose decoder-side merge mode and AMVP for IBC in SCC so as to remove the redundancy. Experimental shows that the proposed method can achieve up to 0.25% Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BD-rate) reduction compared to the conventional SCC with negligible impact to encoding and decoding complexity.

This paper reports on verification testing of the coding performance of the screen content coding (SCC) extensions of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard (Rec. ITU-T H.265 vertical bar ISO/IEC 23008-2 MPEG-H Part 2). The coding performance of HEVC screen content model (SCM) reference software is compared with that of the HEVC test model (HM) without the SCC extensions, as well as with the Advanced Video coding (AVC) joint model (JM) reference software, for both lossy and mathematically lossless compression using All-Intra (AI), Random Access (RA), and Low-delay B (LB) encoding structures and using similar encoding techniques. Video test sequences in 1920x1080 RGB 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:4:4, and YCbCr 4:2:0 colour sampling formats with 8 bits per sample are tested in two categories: "text and graphics with motion" (TGM) and "mixed" content. For lossless coding, the encodings are evaluated in terms of relative bit-rate savings. For lossy compression, subjective testing was conducted at 4 quality levels for each coding case, and the test results are presented through mean opinion score (MOS) curves. The relative coding performance is also evaluated in terms of Bjontegaard-delta (BD) bit-rate savings for equal PSNR quality. The perceptual tests and objective metric measurements show a very substantial benefit in coding efficiency for the SCC extensions, and provided consistent results with a high degree of confidence. For TGM video, the estimated bit-rate savings ranged from 60-90% relative to the JM and 40-80% relative to the HM, depending on the AI/RA/LB configuration category and colour sampling format.

screen content coding (SCC) extension to High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) offers substantial compression efficiency over the existing HEVC standard for computer generated content. However, this gain in compression efficiency is achieved at the expense of further computational complexity with several resource hungry coding tools. Hence, extension of SCC to HEVC hardware encoders can be challenging. This paper presents resource efficient hardware designs for two key SCC tools, Intra Block Copy and Palette coding. Moreover, a new hash search approach is proposed for Intra Block Copy, while a hardware friendly palette indices coding scheme is suggested for Palette coding. These designs are targeted to achieve the throughput necessary for an 1080p 30 frames/s encoder, and incurs coding loss of 11.4% and 5.1% respectively in all intra configurations. The designs are synthesized for a Virtex-7 VC707 evaluation platform.

screen content has different characteristics compared with natural content captured by cameras. To achieve more efficient compression, some new coding tools have been developed in the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) screen content coding (SCC) Extension, which also increase the computational complexity of encoder. In this paper, complexity analysis are first conducted to explore the distribution of complexities. Then, two classification trees, including early coding units (CU) partition tree (EPT) and CU content classification tree (CCT), are designed based on statistical characteristics and coding information. EPT is used to decide whether the CU skip the mode decision process of current depth level and CCT is used to classify the blocks into either natural blocks or screen blocks. Natural blocks will skip screen coding modes and screen blocks skip normal intra modes. Experimental results show the proposed algorithm can save 49% encoding time with 2.7% BD-rate increase on average for All Intra configuration under the SCC common test condition.

The paper presents application of the emerging HEVC screen content coding for frame-compatible compression of stereoscopic video. Such a solution may be an alternative to the Multiview HEVC, which is the state-of-the-art dedicated technique for multiview video compression. The paper provides an extensive description of main differences between both compression techniques. Authors also present adaptation of the screen content coding to compress stereoscopic video as fast and efficiently as possible. The paper reports experimental results of the comparison between HEVC screen content coding and Main profiles for frame-compatible compression of stereoscopic video. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed technique are enumerated in the conclusions.

screen images are a combination of text, graphics and natural images. They extensively appear in such applications as desktop sharing, remote education, video conference, and so on. Ideal compression efficiency on screen contents is unaffordable by classic image or video coder. This paper proposes a new scheme based on H.264 and Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) color quantization, which performs color quantification prior to regular H.264 encoding. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves more than 1-2 dB at most bit rate settings compared with the traditional compression algorithm.

With the emerging applications such as online gaming and Wi-Fi display, screen content video, including computer generated text, graphics and animations, becomes more popular than ever. Traditional video coding technologies typically were developed based on models that fit into natural, camera-captured video. The distinct characteristics exhibited between these two types of contents necessitate the exploration of coding efficiency improvement given that new tools can be developed specially for screen content video. The HEVC screen content coding Extensions (HEVC SCC) have been developed to incorporate such new coding tools in order to achieve better compression efficiency. In this paper, intra block copy (IBC, or intra picture block compensation), also named current picture referencing (CPR) in HEVC SCC, is introduced and discussed. This tool is very efficient for coding of screen content video in that repeated patterns in text and graphics rich content occur frequently within the same picture. Having a previously reconstructed block with equal or similar pattern as a predictor can effectively reduce the prediction error and therefore improve coding efficiency. Simulation results show that up to 50% BD rate reduction in all intra coding can be achieved with intra block copy enabled, compared to the HEVC reference encoder without this tool. Significant BD rate reductions for other coding configurations are also observed.

The High efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard defines two in-loop filters to improve the objective and subjective quality of the reconstructed frames. Through analyzing the effectiveness of the in loop filters, it is noted that band offset (BO) process achieves much more coding gains for text region which mostly employ intra block copy (IntraBC) prediction mode. The intraBC prediction process in HEVC is performed by using the already reconstructed region for block matching, which is similar to motion compensation. If BO process is applied after one coding tree unit (CTU) encoded, the distortion between original and reconstructed samples copied by the IntraBC prediction will be further reduced, which is simple to operate and can obtain good coding efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves up to 3.4% BD-rate reduction in Allintra (AI) for screen content sequences with encoding and decoding time no increase.
