With the emerging applications, such as screen mirroring, and remote play, screen contents coding (SCC) plays important role in video coding recently. Since the characteristics of screen contents are different from nature contents, palette coding is adopted in the current draft standard of HEVC-SCC. The basic idea of the palette coding is to represent the colors of a coding unit (CU) by the indices of selected representative colors. This paper presents that the produced index maps exhibit considerably high spatial correlation. To utilize the spatial correlation among indices, a general 2-D search method is proposed firstly for index map compression. To reduce the memory access and implementation complexity, three simplified search schemes are proposed to balance the coding performance and complexity. The experimental results show that the three simplified methods can achieve 0.6 %, 0.5 % and 0.9 % BD-rate saving respectively, as compared to HM-13.0 + RExt-6.0 test model.

screen content coding (SCC) is the extension of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC). Main target of SCC is saving BD-rate for screen videos generated by computers. However encoding time is increased because of new intra modes named Intra Block Copy (IntraBC) and Palette mode to save BD-rate. This paper proposes Sharp Edge Based Classification (SE BC) and Directional Edge Based Classification (DEBC). SEBC classifies Largest coding Units (LCUs) based on sharp edge features and DEBC classifies LCUs based on directional edge features. Then needless mode and depth are skipped. Experimental results show 10.9% time saving with 2.10% BD-rate increase in average for screen videos at the SCC reference software (SCM3.0 [1]).

Improved entropy coding for quantized transform coefficients in HEVC screen content coding

In the emerging high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, a Golomb-Rice code is adopted to binarize level information. The Golomb-Rice code is optimal for encoding symbols with the exponential probability distribution. In general, quantized transform coefficients of natural images show the exponential probability distribution. However, screen contents usually have a totally different probability distribution, and the Golomb-Rice code is not appropriate for screen content coding. In this paper, we focus on a new entropy coding scheme for screen content coding. In the proposed scheme, we clip inefficient high magnitude coefficient levels that do not fit the exponential probability distribution. Then, we apply a limited length Golomb-Rice code to binarize clipped levels. From experimental results, it is verified that the proposed method achieves on average 0.60 % BD-rate saving and up to 1.13 % BD-rate saving, compared to HEVC screen content coding. When the proposed method is combined with a well-known screen content coding technique, transform skipping, it shows up to 24.02 % BD-rate saving.

By considering the increasing importance of screen contents, the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard includes screen content coding as one of its requirements. In this paper, we demonstrate that enabling frame level block searching in HEVC can significantly improve coding efficiency on screen contents. We propose a hash-based block matching scheme for the intra block copy mode and the motion estimation process, which enables frame level block searching in HEVC without changing the HEVC syntaxes. In the proposed scheme, the blocks sharing the same hash values with the current block are selected as prediction candidates. Then the hash-based block selection is employed to select the best candidates. To achieve the best coding efficiency, the rate distortion optimization is further employed to improve the proposed scheme by balancing the coding cost of motion vectors and prediction difference. Compared with HEVC, the proposed scheme achieves 21% and 37% bitrate saving with all intra and low delay configurations with encoding time reduction. Up to 59% bitrate saving can be achieved on sequences with large motions.

screen content coding with Primary and Secondary Reference Buffers for String Matching and Copying

A screen content coding （SCC） algorithm that uses a primary reference buffer （PRB） and a secondary reference buffer （SRB） for string matching and string copying is proposed. PRB is typically the traditional reconstructed picture buffer which provides reference string pixels for the current pixels being coded. SRB stores a few of recently and frequently referenced pixels for repetitive reference by the current pixels being coded. In the encoder, searching of optimal reference string is performed in both PRB and SRB, and either a PRB or SRB string is selected as an optimal reference string on a string-by-string basis. Compared with HM-16.4＋SCM-40 reference software, the proposed SCC algorithm can improve coding performance measured by bit-distortion rate reduction of average 4.19% in all-intra configuration for text and graphics with motion category＇ of test sequences defined by JCT-VC common test condition.

Palette mode, as a new coding tool, is adopted in the screen content coding Extensions of High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC SCC) that is being defined by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video coding (JCT-VC). In the palette mode, pixels in a coding unit (CU) are represented by selected representative colours according to the characteristics of screen contents in which pixel values usually concentrate on few colour values. This paper introduces the palette mode in HEVC SCC, and our contributions to the palette mode are also presented. Experimental results show that disabling the palette mode suffers 20.3%, 13.0%, and 7.5% BD-rate increases for "YUV, text & graphics with motion, 1080p & 720p sequences" under all intra (AI), random access (RA), and low-delay B (LB) common test conditions, respectively.

This paper presents PSNR-based comparison tests of the objective compression performance of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard, its format range extensions (RExt), and its draft screen content coding extensions (SCC). The current dominant standard, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, is used as an anchor reference in the comparison. The conditions used for the comparison tests were designed to reflect relevant application scenarios and to enable a fair comparison to the maximum extent feasible - i.e., using comparable quantization settings, reference frame buffering, intra refresh periods, rate-distortion optimization decision processing, etc. It is noted that such PSNR-based objective comparisons generally provide more conservative estimates of HEVC benefit than are found in subjective studies. The experimental results show that, when compared with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, HEVC version 1 provides bit rate reductions for equal PSNR of about 23% for all-intra coding, 34% for random access coding, and 38% for low-delay coding. This is consistent with prior studies indicating that HEVC can provide a bit rate reduction of about 50% for equal subjective quality for most applications. The HEVC format range extensions provide similar bit rate reductions of about 13-25% for all-intra coding, 28-33% for random access coding, and 32-38% for low-delay coding at different bit rate ranges. For lossy coding of screen content, the HEVC screen content coding extensions achieve bit rate reductions of about 66%, 63%, and 61% for all-intra coding, random access coding, and low-delay coding, respectively (86%, 84%, and 78% for RGB text and graphics with motion). For lossless coding, the corresponding bit rate reductions are about 40%, 33%, and 32%, respectively.

This paper presents an in-loop adaptive color-space transform for the HEVC screen content coding extension. In the proposed method, the prediction residual is adaptively converted into a different color space to reduce the cross-component redundancy. After the ACT, the signal is coded following the existing HEVC framework. To keep the complexity as low as possible, fixed color-space transforms that are easily implemented with shift and add operations are utilized. Significant coding gains are achieved by this method in the current HEVC screen content coding reference software with no increase of decoding runtime. The proposed method has been adopted to the HEVC screen content coding extension.

Emerging screen content coding brings great challenges to rate control due to significantly different characteristics of screen content from conventional video, e.g. large motion, frequent scene changes. This paper proposes an efficient rate control scheme for screen content coding by considering the characteristics of screen content. We first classify pictures of a video sequence into different groups by comparing the current picture with its neighbours. Then for each group, we apply different strategies to bit allocation and parameter updating process based on the characteristics of each group. The proposed algorithm can control the bitrate accurately without introducing any additional encoding delay. Experiment results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve PSNR with a more accurate bitrate compared with the existing rate control scheme.
