This paper investigates a fast transform skip mode decision method which can reduce residual coding complexity of a transform skip tool for SCC (screen content coding) extension of HEVC (High Efficiency Video coding). Noticing the high tendency of transform skip mode occurring in 4x4 transform blocks in a coding unit (CU) coded as the intra block copy, the proposed fast method is designed to select either transform skip or coded block flag being zero for 4x4 blocks in a CU coded as intra block copy. Experiments verify reduction of total encoding time by average 3.0% and 4x4 transform block encoding time by 28.2% with only a slight increase of BD-rate by 0.22%. In addition, a modified transform skip mode signaling method is designed in order to minimize the coding efficiency loss due to the proposed fast mode decision. It shows reduction of total encoding time by 2.9% on average and encoding time of 4x4 transform block by 27.6% with only 0.05% BD-rate degradation.

screen content largely consists of static parts, e.g. static background. However, none of the available screen content coding tools fully employs this characteristic. In this paper we present the copy mode, a new coding mode specifically aiming at increased coding efficiency for static screen content. The basic principle of the copy mode is the direct copy of the collocated block from the reference frame. Mean weighted BD-Rate gains of 2.4% are achieved for JCT-VC test sequences compared to SCM-2.0. For sequences containing lots of static background, coding gains as high as 7.6% are observed. The new coding mode is further enhanced by several encoder optimizations, among them an early skip mechanism. Thereby, the encoder runtime complexity is reduced by up to 39%.

screen content usually has much different motion characteristics compared with conventional videos, which makes exiting rate control schemes unsuitable. This paper analyses the motion characteristics of screen content and proposes an efficient rate control method for screen content coding, by improving the bit allocation and model parameter adaptation strategies. The proposed rate control algorithm is able to both control bitrate accurately and improve the quality of the entire video sequence. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves smaller bitrate errors and better coding performance. Compared with the existing rate control scheme in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) reference software, the proposed algorithm improves the coding efficiency by 5.6% on average while obtaining smaller bitrate errors.

Block matching used in traditional hybrid coding,like intra block copy (IBC), is not always efficient to code similar or identical pattern within a picture, since they use 2-D pattern of only a few fixed sizes. To improve the coding efficiency of such repeated pattern with a flexible size, an intra string copy method is proposed in this paper. The proposed string copy is flexible in the sense that it allows string matching of variable sizes and shapes. For the matched strings, the relative distance from reference sample position to current sample position is coded as well as the matching length. To enable fast encoder search, hash function is employed to quickly identify the reference pixels in the previously coded areas by hash lookup table. Moreover, the string matching is applied not only the previously coded CUs but also the current CU. The simulation results report that the proposed method achieves 12.3% and 11% BD-rate savings for 1080P RGB and YUV respectively in full frame IBC condition.

This paper proposes a noise reduction method for screen content coding using HEVC. The proposed method focuses on that the histograms of pixel values for screen content have distinct and sparse peaks respectively. This property is often degraded by the coding distortion, which arises some small peaks around the original peak. This paper presents a method for removing the small peaks derived from the noise, and its implementation to HEVC as an extension of SAO. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed noise reduction method significantly improves the visual quality of decoded screen content with bit-rate reduction. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper presents fast and efficient intra prediction algorithms for screen content coding (SCC). The proposed algorithms focus on smooth regions frequently appeared in screen content videos, which have the characteristics of noiselessness. All the samples in a noiseless smooth region exhibit exactly the same pixel value. We then propose two intra coding techniques for noiseless smooth regions in SCC based on the smoothness of the boundary samples which are used for intra prediction. Our proposed algorithm can reduce computational complexity by at most 26.7% while keeping nearly the same video quality. Moreover, by removing the redundant coding bits for intra prediction modes, computational complexity can be further reduced to at most 53.3% in terms of encoding time with bitrate reduction up to 1.2%. © 2015 IEEE.

With the rapid development of screen content video applications, screen content coding (SCC) is urgently needed to be used in commercial codecs. However, the extra encoding complexity introduced by the new SCC tools has posed a great challenge for its practical deployment. In this paper, motivated by our observations that there should be a fine-grained mapping between image content and candidate modes, we propose a two-step fast mode decision method to reduce the encoding complexity. First, we propose to use a convolution neural network (CNN) to automatically extract useful features for fine-grained content classification. Second, we build a precise and concise mapping from CUs to candidate modes by simultaneously considering CU content type, CU size, and mode complexity. Note that the spatial correlations between neighboring CUs and current CU are also utilized in candidate modes derivation. In addition to the two-step fast mode decision method, a content-aware early termination algorithm is further proposed to reduce the encoding complexity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves better performance compared with state-of-the-art ones, with 50.13% total encoding complexity reduction and only 0.92% BD-rate increase.

screen content like cartoons, captures of typical computer screens or video with text overlay or news ticker is an important category of video, which needs new techniques beyond the existing video coding techniques. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of screen content and coding efficiency of HEVC on screen content. We propose a new coding scheme, which adopts a non-transform representation, separating screen content into color component and structure component. Based on the proposed representation, two coding modes are designed for screen content to exploit the directional correlation and non-translational changes in screen video sequences. The proposed scheme is then seamlessly incorporated into the HEVC structure and implemented into HEVC range extension reference software HM9.0. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves up to 52.6% bitrate saving compared with HM9.0. On average, 35.1%, 29.2% and 23.6% bitrate saving are achieved with intra, random-access and low-delay configurations, respectively. The visual quality of the decoded video sequences is also significantly improved by reducing ringing artifacts around sharp edges and reserving the shape of text without blur.

In an increasingly connected world, consumer video experiences have diversified away from traditional broadcast video into new applications with increased use of non-camera-captured content such as computer screen desktop recordings or animations created by computer rendering, collectively referred to as screen content. There has also been increased use of graphics and character content that is rendered and mixed or overlaid together with camera-generated content. The emerging Versatile Video coding (VVC) standard, in its first version, addresses this market change by the specification of low-level coding tools suitable for screen content. This is in contrast to its predecessor, the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard, where highly efficient screen content support is only available in extension profiles of its version 4. This paper describes the screen content support and the five main low-level screen content coding tools in VVC: transform skip residual coding (TSRC), block-based differential pulse-code modulation (BDPCM), intra block copy (IBC), adaptive color transform (ACT), and the palette mode. The specification of these coding tools in the first version of VVC enables the VVC reference software implementation (VTM) to achieve average bit-rate savings of about 41% to 61% relative to the HEVC test model (HM) reference software implementation using the Main 10 profile for 4:2:0 screen content test sequences. Compared to the HM using the screen-Extended Main 10 profile and the same 4:2:0 test sequences, the VTM provides about 19% to 25% bit-rate savings. The same comparison with 4:4:4 test sequences revealed bit-rate savings of about 13% to 27% for Y'CBCR and of about 6% to 14% for R'G'B' screen content. Relative to the HM without the HEVC version 4 screen content coding extensions, the bit-rate savings for 4:4:4 test sequences are about 33% to 64% for Y'CBCR and 43% to 66% for R'G'B' screen content.

Technologies for coding non-camera-captured video contents have received great interests lately due to the rapid growth of application areas such as wireless display and screen sharing, etc. In response to the market demands, the ITU-T Video coding Expert Group and ISO/IEC Motion Picture Expert Group have jointly launched a new standardization project, i.e. the HighEfficiency Video coding (HEVC) extensions on screen content coding (HEVC SCC). Several new video coding tools, including intra block copy, palette coding, adaptive color transform, and adaptive motion resolution, have been developed and adopted into HEVC SCC draft standard. This paper reviews the main features and coding technologies in the current HEVC SCC draft standard, with discussions about the performance and complexity aspects compared with prior arts.
