Does scripting operative plans in advance lead to better preparedness of trainees? A pilot study

Background: We pondered if preoperative scripting might better prepare residents for the operating room (OR). Methods: Interns rotating on a general surgeon's service were instructed to script randomized cases prior to entering the OR. Scripts contained up to 20 points highlighting patient information perceived important for surgical management. The attending was blinded to the scripting process and completed a feedback sheet (Likert scale) following each procedure. Feedback questions were categorized into "preparedness" (aware of patient specific details, etc.) and "performance" (provided better assistance, etc.). Results: Eight surgical interns completed 55 scripted and 61 non-scripted cases. Total scores were higher in scripted cases (p = 0.02). Performance scores were higher for scripted cases (3.31 versus 3.13, p = 0.007), while preparedness did not differ (3.65 and 3.62, p = 0.51). Conclusions: This pilot study suggests scripting cases may be a useful preoperative planning tool to increase interns' operative and patient care performance but may not affect perceived preparedness. Within sustainable HCI research, we have witnessed a growing interest in studying interaction designs that support households to 'shift' energy usage to times when it is sustainably favourable. In this paper, we investigate shifting through a purposely provocative and scripted design, which challenges the idea that renewable electricity is an always-available resource for households to consume. To do so, we made electricity for washing laundry either free or not available. We conducted a detailed qualitative study with four families that experienced our intervention for a month. We present five themes that illustrate how families adapted, reflected, and formed new routines and expectations related to washing practices. We discuss the broader implications of combining scripting and provocation as a means to intervene, disrupt and understand energy consuming practices within the home.

In this paper we outline a new model of concurrency that is specifically designed for the specialized domain of game scripting. scripting is used extensively in game development both for the implementation of AI based behaviors and for providing game players with the ability to customize commercial games. scripting languages have not, as yet, benefited from the move to multicore architectures. We discuss the properties unique to game scripting that any proposed model must satisfy. Then we propose a model of concurrency particular to games that addresses these issues while allowing game scripting languages to fully utilize multicore processors. The next steps in developing this model further are discussed.

Supremica is a software tool that implements several state-of-the-art algorithms to manipulate discrete-event systems, such as different types of compositions and compositional supervisor synthesis. Lua is a light-weight programming language suitable as a scripting language embedded into other applications. This paper describes the use of Lua as a scripting language for Supremica. To this end, the LuaJ interpreter is added to Supremica as a bridge between the Java-based implementation of Supremica and the Lua scripts. In this way, Supremica's entire Java API is made available to Lua scripts. Thus, scripts can automatically create automata, and manipulate them with all the algorithms available in Supremica and further manipulate the result with new algorithms implemented by Lua scripts. This opens up a new world of possibilities to try out new ideas and to extend the power of Supremica. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors. Recent specitications such as WS-Management and WS-Distributed Management have stressed the importance of management of resources and services and propose methods towards querving Web Services to gather the meta-data associated with these services. Management often entails system setup, querving system metadata, manipulation of system parameters at runtime and taking actions based on the system parameters to time system performance. Real-time applications require rapid deployment of application components and demand results in real-time. In this paper we present the HPSearch system which enables dynamic management of the system including both streams and Web Services, and rapid deployment of applications via a scripting interface. We illustrate the functioning of the system by modeling a data streaming application and rapidly deploying the system and application components.

The ways that categories of immigration are drawn and standards of successful citizenship are measured in Canadian society influence the ways that people script themselves to appear as worthy immigrant applicants and potential Canadian citizens. For immigrant hopefuls, scripting oneself using the language of immigration and positioning oneself as a deserving and desirable immigrant is crucial for gaining mobility and passage into Canadian society. In my thesis, I explore the literature surrounding processes and concepts like borders, mobility, good citizenship, the "white standard", and racialization that serve as foundations and outcomes of scripting "good" immigrants and "successful" citizenship. I embed the experiences of my informants within an analysis of this literature as well as the processes of immigration outlined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). I find that scripting immigrant categories and citizenship can result in immigrants enacting only a limited Canadianness. Immigrant categories involve restrictive policies that can result in exploitation. I also offer that immigrants may live a double-consciousness through their transnationalism and constituting of "back home". The larger hope for this project is to provide an understanding of the processes of scripting that work to make exclusive the right to be Canadian so that the vulnerability and suffering caused by the existence of hierarchies of citizenship can be tackled as a public issue and make for a more inclusive and equitable Canada.
