Tapper is a lightweight scripting engine for highly constrained wireless sensor nodes. Many such nodes run on 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) with only a few kilobytes of on-chip memory, often with segmented memory and unorthogonal registers that make it difficult to perform even the most basic tasks. To facilitate development of software routines and enable dynamic reconfigurability, Tapper provides a software layer that can interpret human readable commands either interactively or in batch. It can invoke compiled routines ranging from timer and interrupt configurations and task scheduling to accessing I/O devices. Experiments on platforms including 8051, ATMega 169V, and Freescale MC9S12NE64 with built-in Ethernet show that the Tapper setup has the same modular, dynamic benefits as middleware systems but without the high overhead in code size and data memory.

The demands placed on hydrologic analyses have increased considerably in recent years. Hydrologic analyses involve numerous methods and are useful in many fields, such as agriculture, forestry and grassland farming. In order to catch information and knowledge from Digital Elevation Models (DEM), processing data step by step in software is available, which needs many manual workloads and is not convenient for the repetitive process. In order to accelerate the hydrologic process and facilitate reuse of components, scientific workflow systems can be leveraged. In this paper, the hydrologic analysis applies a scientific workflow approach for automatic discovery and widespread application. A scripting workflow engine in GeoJModelBuilder is extended to incorporate hydrologic models in GRASS, construct a hydrologic workflow and finally automate the whole hydrologic process.

OpenSim is a 3D virtual reality platform and now has been widely used in many fields. Its powerful scripting technology is helpful for third party development. Linden scripting language is the most important scripting language in OpenSim, which only supports virtual worlds' common applications but is weak in domain-specific applications. In order to extend Linden scripting functions, a general extended scheme is proposed in this paper. The structure and rule of OpenSim's scripting engine are analyzed. Then the management mechanisms of thread pool and queue are summed up. We present four extending approaches. Their implementations and scopes of applications are compared. We choose expanding service modules as the general extended scheme. By extending database service of the item bank, scripting functions (e. g., llMakeTest) are developed to support teaching evaluation in 3D virtual learning environments on OpenSim platform. The correctness of the extended scheme is proved by the case study. The scheme provides a guideline for developing Linden scripting functions for specific applications. It is verified that expanding OpenSim's domain-specific applications based on scripting technology is feasible.

Scientific workflow plays an important role in complex scientific computing. It can integrate various data and analysis functions to solve complicated geoprocessing problems which usually involve a couple of steps. They could be accomplished manually step by step in Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS), an open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software, or automated through a scientific workflow approach. In order to automate geospatial processes and facilitate reuse of constructed processes, a script -based workflow module is proposed to support integration of geoprocessing functions in GRASS.
