GameScript: a simplified scripting language for video game development

The process of video game development is complex, requiring proficiency in various technologies for design and implementation, including mastery of game engines and associated programming languages. Defining the behaviors of game elements within the necessary subprocesses poses a significant challenge. This challenge arises partly due to the utilization of general-purpose programming languages, which offer a wide range of options and allow tasks to be approached from different angles. This study introduces GameScript, a simplified scripting language designed for video game development. Based on principles of structured programming and inspired by the While language, GameScript focuses on essential game behavior definitions using a limited set of statements, including IF-THEN-ELSE selection and operations related to game elements to create and destroy them, or to modify properties. By using only numeric variables and simple arithmetic and relational operators, GameScript simplifies data handling and allows for the creation of various arcade games with straightforward syntax. Integrated into a multi-agent system game engine, GameScript has been validated through the successful implementation of diverse arcade game mechanics, demonstrating its effectiveness.

A scripting language for state configured layered control of a long range autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is introduced. The XML-based language has been designed to meet the complex requirements for long-term autonomous operation. It does not require that mission planners be programmers, yet allows them to have a high degree of certainty at deployment that the robot will do what they want it to do. The script is simple to execute on the vehicle, both to minimize CPU power usage and to minimize the chance of failure due to complexity. Users do not need a high-fidelity model of the AUV to plan a mission, as the robot may change in unexpected ways over the course of the mission. Those who wish to do more advanced programming of mission commands and behaviors can do so in the script and are not able to crash the vehicle's operating system. To address these needs, the "Tethys script" state-configured layered control language has been developed.

We present the capabilities of the scripting language Open PROMOL and its processor. The intention of the language is to pre-program specifications for modifying programs written in a target language. We use its processor either as a tool for developing the stand-alone reusable components or as a "component-from-the-shelf" in generative tools for generating domain specific programs. The processor itself uses the module (lexical analyser and parser) produced by Lex & Yacc as a reusable component. We describe the generation, computation, control, parameterization and gluing capabilities of the language. We compare our approach with the similar approaches known in the literature.

A practical solution for achieving language compatibility in scripting language compilers

Although scripting languages have become very popular, even mature scripting language implementations remain interpreted. Several compilers and reimplementations have been attempted, generally focusing on performance. Based on our survey of these reimplementations, we determine that there are three important features of scripting languages that are difficult to compile or reimplement. Since scripting languages are defined primarily through the semantics of their original implementations, they often change semantics between releases. They provide C APIs, used both for foreign-function interfaces and to write third-party extensions. These APIs typically have tight integration with the original implementation, and are used to provide large standard libraries, which are difficult to re-use, and costly to reimplement. Finally, they support run-time code generation. These features make it difficult to design a fully compatible compiler. We present a technique to support these features in an ahead-of-time compiler for PHP. Our technique uses the original PHP implementation through the provided C API, both in our compiler and in our generated code. We support all of these important scripting language features. Additionally, our approach allows us to automatically support limited future language changes. We present a discussion and performance evaluation of this technique. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This paper describes the language for a statistical system named Jasp (JAva based Statistical Processor). Even if a statistical system has an advanced graphical user interface for operations, a language for it is still important in order to have complete control of it. The language is also used to implement new statistical procedures that are not realized in the system. For simplifying these, the Jasp language is designed as a procedural function-based scripting language especially for statistical analysis. The language, at the same time, can treat class-based objects for gathering related functions without difficulty. In addition, it can "glue" Java classes and routines written in native languages, and make them available simply.

Determinism is an appealing property for parallel programs, as it simplifies understanding, reasoning and debugging. It is particularly appealing in dynamic (scripting) languages, where ease of programming is a dominant design goal. Some existing parallel languages use the type system to enforce determinism statically, but this is not generally practical for dynamic languages. In this paper, we describe how determinism can be obtained-and dynamically enforced/verified-for appropriate extensions to a parallel scripting language. Specifically, we introduce the constructs of Deterministic Parallel Ruby (DPR), together with a run-time system (TARDIS) that verifies properties required for determinism, including correct usage of reductions and commutative operators, and the mutual independence (data-race freedom) of concurrent tasks. Experimental results confirm that DPR can provide scalable performance on multicore machines and that the overhead of TARDIS is low enough for practical testing. In particular, TARDIS significantly outperforms alternative data-race detectors with comparable functionality. We conclude with a discussion of future directions in the dynamic enforcement of determinism.

Higher-Level Multimedia scripting language (MSL) has been created to obtain very efficient man-machine interface using real-time multimedia personalized presentations. Firstly, the trends of scripting languages and needs for this kind of man-machine communication were analyzed. Then, creation of the language through several steps is described: specification of the language, creation of its syntax and semantics, creation of an interpreter, and testing. The results showed that MSL code of a presentation was significantly simplified while the time of code creation and its presentation satisfies real-time needs. These features of language were obtained applying the abstraction of some most general functions of multimedia presentation. Created MSL code could be nm on different platforms like stand alone computers (Lingo scripting language) as well as Web based applications (XML language). Testing of the prototype system proved that the language could be an efficient part of the real-time multimedia systems that generate personalized multimedia presentation according to the context, available multimedia data and profile of a user.

In modeling and simulation it is often necessary to simulate a model with a variety of settings and evaluate the simulation results with measured data or previously acquired results. As doing this manually is error-prone and ineffective, scripting languages are often used to automate this process. In general a simulation description is tool and model dependent. Therefore, simulating the same model with the same simulation description in different simulation tools or comparing two different models with the same settings is often not easily achieved. We propose an object-oriented, tool-independent, easy-to-use, domain-specific scripting language to describe simulations in an exchangeable and uniform manner. Through this simulation description the simulation settings and the simulation environment can easily be changed while syntax and sequence of commands remain the same. The language is Python based and is designed to be simple, well-readable and intuitive even with marginal programming experience while maintaining Pythons' strength. The language uses an in-house Python library which provides interfaces to different simulation environments (so far Dymola, OpenModelica, Simulink). This library can also be used directly in Python, enabling experienced Python users to keep describing their simulations in Python but benefiting from our efforts to achieve tool-independence.

This work establishes a tourism venue exhibition system according to the reality of venue distribution, respectively, showing the theme of every venue, appearance and highlight. Firstly, collect relevant material, then use screenshots and photoshop software to modify material and establish a material library, then use flash software to further edit material and components. Finally, the relationship between components is edited, through scripting language to complete the switch and the pop-up function. The design provide certain reference for customer's travel.

We are studying a dependable scripting language in JST/DEOS project. We think that we can realize a dependable scripting language when it has ability to manage the risk of a program written by using it. We are developing a scripting language, which can customize its syntax by minimum language components and language extensions. However, to manage the risk of a program, the criterion for choosing the language extensions is needed. We estimated the programming risk of syntax from the frequency and impact of the failure that occur when using it. In this paper, we discuss a possibility of reducing the programming risk by syntax level restriction of a programming language.
