In order to prepare graduates with "competences to act", vocational education and training require new approaches that enable the future employees to act independently in real work situations. The work-process-oriented curriculum and action-oriented learning could be considered as such a kind of curricula and a pedagogic method. However, how to provide computer-mediate scaffoldings to support online action-oriented learning within a work-process-oriented curriculum is still a challenge. This paper reports our work to scaffold online action-oriented learning by specifying an integrated learning-work process using a scripting language as a formal learning-work process model, called a unit of learning. Such a process model can be interpreted by a language-compatible learning platform to guide and foster the learning-work activities through configuring the learning-work environment dynamically. This paper also reports a case study conducted at a high-level vocational school. The results reveal that the computer-mediated scaffoldings in our process-oriented learning platform are useful to support online action-oriented learning.

Modular robotics has been an active area of research for the last decade. In this paper, we argue that it also provides an excellent platform for education. PolyBot is a type of modular reconfigurable robot developed at PARC. The PolyKinetic(TM) System provides a robotic scripting language and programming environment for controlling this type of robot. Based on experience with mentoring high school students, and running a tutorial for robotic researchers at IROS'03, we show that, PolyBot and the PolyKinetic(TM) System is effective for educational activities at multiple levels. These include playing, exploring, building, programming, competing, and most of all, learning while having fun.

The increasing complexity and heterogeneity of modern networks is pushing industry and research to look for a single and consistent way of managing networks. With the advent of open object-oriented distributed computing models such as CORBA, there are efforts to make the operational and management models the same, i.e. to manage and operate the network using CORBA. The aim of this paper is to show some techniques that allow to manage CMIP/SNMP network resources using CORBA. Static techniques which map each managed object class into a corresponding CORBA interface are compared with dynamic techniques which rely on runtime information. Finally this paper demonstrates that CORBA-based network management applications are becoming attractive in terms of efficiency and application size, overcoming limitations of early solutions.

Test-driven development (TDD) is the practice of creating automated unit tests that exercise planned software functionality, before writing the software itself. TDD leads to higher quality software by encouraging developers to analyze individual units of behavior before coding and by allowing easy detection of problems introduced by software change. However, few tools effectively support TDD for graphical user interfaces. Those that do are platform-specific and require developers to express all tests as executable code for the target platform. This paper describes UIT (User Interface Tester), a toolset designed to support TDD for interactive applications. UIT addresses the weaknesses of existing solutions by using human-readable declarative test scripts and by generating skeleton GUIs from test scripts so that tests can be created first. It also supports driving GUIs that target different platforms. We present details of the scripting language, an overview of the UIT architecture with a focus on its multi-platform capabilities, and a discussion of current status and future plans. We believe that as UIT matures, it can assist developers in reaping the benefits of TDD.

JavaScript performance is paramount to a user's browsing experience. Browser vendors have gone to great lengths to improve JavaScript's steady-state performance. This has led to sophisticated web applications. However, as users increasingly expect instantaneous page load times, another important goal for JavaScript engines is to attain minimal startup times. In this paper, we reduce the startup time of JavaScript programs by enhancing the reuse of compilation and optimization information across different executions. Specifically, we propose a new scheme to increase the startup performance of Inline Caching (IC), a key optimization for dynamic type systems. The idea is to represent a substantial portion of the IC information in an execution in a context-independent way, and reuse it in subsequent executions. We call our enhanced IC design Reusable Inline Caching (RIC). We integrate RIC into the state-of-the-art Google V8 JavaScript engine and measure its impact on the initialization time of popular JavaScript libraries. By recycling IC information collected from a previous execution, RIC reduces the average initialization time per library by 17%.

The technique which converts text-based document into a TV show like computer graphics animation has been developed. However, writing a scripting language requires a variety of knowledge on TV shows such as speech timing, camera angle, lighting and so on. In this paper, we propose TV show template that contains animation settings imitating a particular type of TV show and semi-automatic animation generation using it.

Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) are gaining increased importance in a variety of applications, both military and civilian, due to their ability to carry out critical missions with reduced costs and minimal risks to human life. However, a UAV system is essentially a complex distributed system involving multiple heterogeneous software and hardware modules. The seamless integration of such components is one of the key challenges facing UAV systems. Furthermore, developing and maintaining a UAV system is a highly expensive and time consuming process. In this paper we present the framework a novel distributed component-based software framework that facilitates rapid development, seamless integration and run-time maintenance of UAV systems. The framework is composed of four main components: the Mission Planner, the Task Executer, the World Model, and DicoCom. Whereas the first three components facilitate the creation and execution of UAV missions, the latter is a generic component model that constitutes the basis for creating distributed components with different interaction patterns. Furthermore, the framework provides a scripting language, called DicoScript, used for binding the distributed components together and describing high level UAV missions. This paper presents the framework design goals and architecture, elucidates the main framework components and the DicoScript language, and describes the use of the framework to create UAV-based search and rescue application.

Responding to the difficulties of implementing low-Level Hybridization (LLH), this paper introduces general implementation frameworks for the algorithm focusing on the two well-known meta-heuristics namely Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). Furthermore, in order to provide a more effective approach for the rapid algorithm design and programming implementation, a set of scripting language constructs has been developed that employs the proposed implementation frameworks. For evaluation, twelve algorithms that composed of nine LLHs and three single PSO have been coded and executed with the scripting language. The codes are shown to concisely describe the algorithm in a directly publishable form. In addition, the remarkable optimization results of the LLHs has demonstrated the effectiveness of the LLH mechanisms provided by the proposed implementation frameworks.

scripting languages such as PHP have been criticized as inadequate for supporting maintenance of large-scale software projects. In this paper we attempt to provide insight into the way that five large and well-known PHP applications evolved over time. Several aspects of their history are examined including the amount of unused code, the removal of functions, the use of libraries, the stability of their interfaces, the migration to object-orientation and the evolution of complexity. The results suggest that these systems undergo systematic maintenance which is driven by targeted design decisions and evolution is by no means hindered by the underlying programming language.

The language-Centric Program Generator Models: 3L Paradigm

In this paper we suggest a three-language (3L) paradigm for building the program generator models. The basis of the paradigm is a relationship model of the specification, scripting and target languages. It is not necessary that all three languages would be the separate ones. We consider some internal relationship (roles) between the capabilities of a given language for specifying, scripting (gluing) and describing the domain functionality. We also assume that a target language is basic. We introduce domain architecture (functionality) with the generic components usually composed using the scripting and target languages. The specification language is for describing user's needs for the domain functionality to be extracted from the system. We present the framework for implementing the 3L paradigm and some results from the experimental systems developed for a validation of the approach.
