Distributed Microphone Array Localization Problem via SDP-SOCP Method

In multimedia applications, it is common to employ acoustic sensors collectively to enhance signals and to locate sound sources. A direct problem can be formulated to locate sound sources from a set of known sensors. In order to form the acoustic sensor network, it is important to locate the sensor array locations first. However, unlike other networks in which direct time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements might be possible, acoustic distributed network can only obtain time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measures indirectly from various sound source anchors. While it is common to employ convex optimization techniques to localize sensor locations in a network with TOA information, it has not been studied properly when it comes to TDOAs. This article considers the microphone array localization problem in a distributed acoustic network with TDOA measurements. We formulate the inverse problem which applied the known source locations to identify the wireless array configuration and estimate the location for each array. The proposed method formulates a mixed semidefinite programming (SDP) and second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation model, and then the acoustic geometry is obtained by solving a linear optimal programming. Furthermore, the characteristics of the optimal solution are studied and exact relaxation conditions are given. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mixed model can successfully estimate the sensor locations in noisy and reverberant environments for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space, which outperforms other relaxation methods.

The reconfiguration of the smart distribution grid is one of the low-cost and effective ways to improve loss reduction and voltage balance, which has faced important challenges with the presence of issues such as energy storage systems, electric vehicles, demand side management, and fossil distributed generation resources. In recent studies, in addition to considering the reduction of distribution system losses as one of the goals of the optimization problem, reducing the purchase of power from the transmission network in distribution substations has also been considered by researchers. In this paper, a second-order cone optimization model to solve the stochastic dynamic reconfiguration based on a scenario considering renewable energy resources, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and demand-side management program with fossil distributed generation such as gas-fired and diesel generators resources to improve a multi-objective function including reducing power losses, reducing power purchases at distribution substations and reducing the cost of cutting off renewable energy resources has been proposed. The proposed model is implemented using the Gurobi solver and the Julia programming language, and the results of the IEEE 33-bus network analysis for the day ahead and the 24 h load curve demonstrate the performance of the proposed model.

The cell-based smoothed radial point interpolation method in conjunction with a second order cone programming is proposed for kinematic limit analysis of rigid-perfectly plastic thin plates in this paper. The transverse displacement field is interpolated by the radial point interpolation method (RPIM) and no rotational degrees of freedom are involved. The gradient smoothing technique is utilized to construct smoothed curvature field in every smoothing domain and there is no need to compute the second derivatives of shape functions. The rotational boundary conditions are satisfied in the process of curvature smoothing and the translational boundary conditions can be directly enforced without any special treatment. The limit analysis problem of thin plates is formulated by minimizing the dissipation power subject to a set of equality constraints and this minimization problem can be expressed easily as a standard second order cone programming. It is testified from the computational results that the proposed procedure can provide reasonable and satisfactory upper bound limit load multipliers for thin plates.

Moving Aerial Anchors Assisted Network Localization

To provide effective wireless connectivity, the use of aerial vehicles has been proposed as a promising solution in a wide variety of applications. In some of these applications, however, to achieve desirable performance, knowing the location of users may be a necessity. One promising approach for solving the problem of obtaining user locations is through the locations of some nodes (called anchors) and measuring the distance between connected nodes in the network. In this paper, we propose prominent techniques to improve the performance of the localization using multiple moving aerial anchors (MAA). In using MAAs as anchor nodes, the anchor nodes in our scenario have movement capability. This provides us with more flexibility to enhance the accuracy of the localization with taking into consideration the power consumption of MAAs. In fact, we propose an MAA placement method by which each user can be connected to at least one MAA while MAAs communicate with as small as possible power consumption. Then, we propose a path planning for MAAs by which distances between users and MAAs can be measured in order to estimate the locations of users. Our simulation results show that our proposed localization scheme can provide highly accurate location estimations.

Multiplicative efficiency aggregation to evaluate Taiwanese local auditing institutions performance

This study evaluates the management efficiency and quality effectiveness of Taiwanese local auditing institutions (LAIs), whereby two outputs leave the first stage without being inputted to the second stage under the assumption of variable returns to scale. To address these considerations, this study integrates multiplicative efficiency aggregation (MEA) in a two-stage network data envelopment analysis (DEA) model into the form of second order cone programming (SOCP). Under a cone structure, our DEA findings indicate that management efficiency increased, and quality effectiveness decreased over the sample period 2013-2015. Besides, a truncated regression analysis indicates that differences in operating environments, particularly urbanization level and LAIs' attributes, have significant impacts on the management efficiency of LAIs. The potential applications and strengths of SOCP and MEA-based two-stage network DEA in assessing the LAIs are highlighted.

The increase of controllable devices in distribution networks has turned distribution feeders into Active Distribution Networks (ADN), thus creating possibilities for providing flexibility that can be used by the Transmission System Operator (TSO). In particular, modern ADNs can modify their active and reactive power exchange with the transmission system through control of their own resources. This paper proposes a fast optimizationbased method to approximate the PQ flexibility region at the connection point with the transmission system. The method identifies boundary points of the ADN flexibility region by solving a modified second-order cone optimal power flow problem. Using the boundary points, a polygon approximation of the flexibility region is formed and expressed as linear inequality constraints that can be used to solve a centralized optimization problem which provides reference PQ values for each ADN. The proposed approach is implemented on two test feeders and is evaluated for its precision and computation time.

Individual and collective objectives in an energy community with network constraints

The issue at play is to facilitate the deployment of renewable energy sources by coordinating privately owned batteries to also support local power systems. Battery systems most often exclusively answer the individual objective of their owner (e.g., a reduction in the energy bill). This study intends to explore whether both paradigms, (i) minimizing individual costs and (ii) mitigating network constraints, are achievable for individual battery systems, and if not, what trade-offs are available. Most studies in the literature take a subjective stand in their valuation of individual costs versus grid constraints. A set of Pareto optimal solutions is explored to provide a full picture of the aforementioned trade-off. As such, a novel Multi-Objective Optimal Power Flow (MO-OPF) algorithm is developed to solve a convexified battery control problem. Results show the ability of the proposed methodology to provide a frame of reference to compare online battery controllers, e.g., if a controller can exploit synergies between individual and collective objectives or not. Further, and for the proposed scenario, local energy communities provide a strictly better set of Pareto optimal solutions than individually operated systems.

Mae Hong Son (MHS) is a prototype city that developed a smart grid system to utilize renewable energy power plants and Battery Energy Storage System to the fullest. With many power plants being incorporated into the system, Energy Management System (EMS) is a significant factor in improving the efficiency of renewable energy usage. This paper presents the modified Optimal Power Flow (OPF) model that improves the operation condition. The objectives are to enhance the accuracy, capability, and realism of the OPF model. Furthermore, to introduce a Combined Economic and Emission Dispatch (CEED). In this work, the problem is formulated as second order one programming (SOCP) and use the mathematical model of the power system in MHS. Load data and power generation profile will be utilized as the input to Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) of EMS to simulate the problem solving under different objective functions. The results illustrate that the NMPC with the modified OPF can significantly reduce Total Operating Cost (TOC) and Total CO2 Emission (TCOE). In addition, the improved OPF gives a broader range of feasible solutions when the transmission length is increased. When comparing the results in normal operation, the proposed NMPC with improved OPF can reduce the TOC by 0.49% and the TCOE by 1.39% in the rainy season.

To address the need for high-quality power, the distribution network (DN) is gradually incorporating battery energy storage (BES) and flexible interconnection equipment, such as Soft Open Point (SOP). This paper proposes a mobile battery energy storage (MBES) planning strategy considering multiple scenarios in DN with SOP. Firstly, the fundamental concepts of commonly used equipment like SOP and energy storage are investigated and mathematical models are constructed. secondly, taking the minimum annual comprehensive investment and network loss cost of DN as the planning goal, a MBES planning model for promoting the economics of the DN under multiple scenarios is established. The nonlinear programming model is transformed into a second order cone model by linearization and convex relaxation, which can achieve an accurate and rapid solution. Finally, the improved IEEE-33 node example is used for simulation, and the MBES and BES planning approaches are compared. Results show that combining MBES with SOP control can not only enhance system efficiency but also reduce voltage fluctuation, demonstrating the effectiveness of the suggested technique.

This study examines innovation performance of high-tech companies in China, using a dynamic network data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The innovation process is decomposed into a research and development (R&D) stage and a commercialization stage. In addition, innovation is conceptualized as a consecutive event that goes through multiple time intervals, requiring a dynamic structure of the methodological framework. Using a newly developed dynamic network DEA, the current study calculates a R&D performance index and a commercialization index for the R&D stage and commercialization stage, respectively. The multi-process innovation system is integrated with dynamic carryover items. This results in a highly non-linear dynamic network DEA model. second order cone programming and nested partitions strategies are employed to solve the nonlinear dynamic network DEA model. Our empirical study indicates disparities in innovation performance among different Chinese high-tech companies.
