This paper presents a formulation of fuzzy optimization for uncertainties in natural gas in fuel constraints for hourly individual unit and total unit fuel consumptions. security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) is usually a mixed integer programming and gas load flow has a non-linear equation a genetic algorithm is proposed to solve natural gas transmission network. A fuzzy mixed integer programming optimization is briefly discussed and adapted to deal with security constrained unit commitment schedule. Finally, two case studies are investigated (IEEE 6-bus system with 7-node natural gas transmission grid and the IEEE 118-bus power system linked with 14-node gas transmission test system) and the SCUC results are discussed and compared for the both cases of fuzzy constraints and crisp model. The N-1 criterion is universally taken as the security constrains in the security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem. The line outage distribution factors (LODF) is widely used in the N-1 continency for its state independence and computational efficiency. However, the LODF based model fails to consider reactive power and voltage magnitude. This paper closes this gap by deriving modified line outage distribution factors (MLODF) based on a linear power flow model. The proposed model, though state-independent, provides high-quality approximation of voltage magnitudes. Then, we apply this model to formulate the SCUC problem and propose an iterative solution process based on MLODF post-contingency filter to set up the contingency constraints. The simulation results of the benchmark test systems verify the accuracy of proposed MLODF. The six-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems show that the MLODF based model can provide a more accurate and secure generation schedule comparing with the traditional LODF based model while ensuring the AC feasibility for most N-1 continency.

security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) is a complex optimization algorithm used for day-ahead planning in restructured electricity markets. There are many existing approaches for implementing SCUC, but this paper will focus on the ones based on General Benders Decomposition (GBD). GBD decomposes the SCUC problem into a master problem, feasibility checks and subproblems. This paper will give a comparison study of different ways how the SCUC problem can be decomposed using variations of the existing GBD framework. Our goal is to show all these possible mappings and determine properties of the algorithms in terms of solution quality and runtime scalability. IEEE test cases will be used to present behavior of the algorithms when applied to networks of different size.

unit commitment is a challenging optimization problem that is critical in power system operational planning. Considering N - 1 security criteria, along with transmission lines and operational limitations, leads to a generic security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem. Traditional SCUC formulations for large power systems using injection sensitivity factors are computationally intensive and thus are restrictive. This work proposes an efficient framework for SCUC with energy storage systems (ESSs) and flexible loads, using the line outage distribution factors. Case studies analyze the impact of ESSs and flexible loads on the SCUC results and form a useful guideline for research community. Presented case studies accentuate the individual and combined impact of ESS and flexible demands on the total operation cost, unit commitment status, and power schedules of thermal units of a modified 118-bus system at two different loading levels. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) with continuous intra-hour time-varying reserves. The hourly formulation extends the power-based UC formulation and has reserves which vary continuously within the hour, as opposed to the traditional hourly energy-based SCUC that uses constant reserves within the hour. We show that the traditional hourly energy-based formulation cannot ensure N-1 security at all times, since this formulation is not able to take the power trajectories of units within the hour into account. This is remedied by an hourly power-based version which allows the formulation of contingency constraints to guarantee N-1 security at all times within the hour. The proposed formulation uses continuous time-varying reserves which lowers the cost for providing reserves and makes better use of units' flexibility while still ensuring N-1 security. The energy-based and power-based formulations are evaluated using different versions of a 5-min security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED) based on real load data, thus simulating the real time operation of the system under different assumptions for reserve procurement. The results show that the powerbased formulation increases security compared to the energy-based formulation, both if reserves are fixed to the values from the SCUC or co-optimized in real time by the SCED.

Analysis of FACTS devices on security constrained unit commitment problem

This paper focuses on solving security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem using ABC algorithm incorporating FACTS devices. The objective of the SCUC problem is to obtain the minimum operating cost simultaneously maintaining the security of the system. The SCUC problem is decomposed into unit commitment (UC), the master problem and security-constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) as the sub-problem. The existing generation constraints, such as hourly power demand, system reserves, and minimum up/down time limits, ramp up/down limits are included in the SCUC problem formulation. The ability of FACTS devices to control the power flow through designated routes in transmission lines and thereby reducing the overloading of lines are studied. The solution of SCUC problem is also analyzed during a single line outage contingency. The SCUC is carried out incorporating FACTS devices such as SVC, TCSC, STATCOM, SSSC, UPFC and IPFC. The modeling of the FACTS devices within the power system network and finding a suitable location are discussed. The SCUC has been solved and validated on an IEEE 118-bus test system and a practical South Indian 86 bus utility. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

MIP formulation improvement for large scale security constrained unit commitment with configuration based combined cycle modeling

As a part of the day-ahead market clearing process, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) solves one of the largest and most challenging security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) models. Better computational performance of SCUC models not only improves the market efficiency but also facilitates future market developments. This paper introduces recent developments in SCUC formulation with configuration based combined cycle modeling in MISO, which include the improvement on constraints associated with binary variables, the improvement of formulation on piecewise linear incremental energy curve (PWL) and reduction of non-zeros by aggregating variables (AGG). Furthermore, mathematical proof shows that the proposed enhanced locally ideal PWL model is the convex envelope of the PWL cost function. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation, numerical results and analysis based on MISO system are presented. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

unit commitment, one of the most critical tasks in electric power system operations, faces new challenges as the supply and demand uncertainty increases dramatically due to the integration of variable generation resources such as wind power and price responsive demand. To meet these challenges, we propose a two-stage adaptive robust unit commitment model for the security constrained unit commitment problem in the presence of nodal net injection uncertainty. Compared to the conventional stochastic programming approach, the proposed model is more practical in that it only requires a deterministic uncertainty set, rather than a hard-to-obtain probability distribution on the uncertain data. The unit commitment solutions of the proposed model are robust against all possible realizations of the modeled uncertainty. We develop a practical solution methodology based on a combination of Benders decomposition type algorithm and the outer approximation technique. We present an extensive numerical study on the real-world large scale power system operated by the ISO New England. Computational results demonstrate the economic and operational advantages of our model over the traditional reserve adjustment approach.

Fast Simultaneous Feasibility Test for security constrained unit commitment

We present a novel fast security analysis method to perform a simultaneous feasibility test (SFT) for security constrained unit commitment (SCUC). Given an SCUC solution, SFT computes base and contingent line flows, overloads, and sensitivities for formulating the violated constraints in the SCUC solver. We use the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury (SMW) formula to handle topology changes across hours and contingencies. We first developed this SMW-based SFT for contingencies relative to a static network as a generalization of line outage distribution factors (LODFs) achieving the speed of LODFs and modeling complex contingencies as in commercial SFTs. Speedup of the SMW method over commercial methods comes from moving computation from the solve phase to a startup phase. We now extend the SMW technique to network changes across hours and contingencies, permitting deployment on a single compute node due to speedup of the startup phase. The fast SMW-based SFT can be used in a callback, improving over the traditional SCUC-SFT iteration due to a stronger guarantee of satisfying security constraints and to overall speedup since the SCUC solver is invoked only once. The memory required by the SMW-based SFT is large but manageable, and we formulate a technique to decrease this by 80% when implemented.

As part of the day-ahead market clearing process, MISO solves one of the most challenging security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) models. With footprint expansions and increased activity from financial traders, the day-ahead market unit commitment encounters significant performance challenges from time to time. This paper reviews MISO's day-ahead market clearing process and identifies the factors contributing to these performance challenges. It then shares techniques that have been developed to overcome these challenges. Three alternative backup solving approaches were developed. An incremental solving algorithm is proposed to better handle the iterative market clearing process and to perform solution polishing and commitment reason identification. Numerical results based on MISO data are presented.
