In this paper, operation management of microgrids is performed. To do so, some contingencies including outage of distributed generators (DG), energy storage (ES) and the upstream network are considered. Since the microgrids have suitable capabilities in terms of control and communication, demand response reserve can be applied to improve the operation management. Using Monte Carlo simulation method and Markov chain, several scenarios are generated to show the possible contingencies in various hours. Then, a scenario reduction method is used for reducing the number of scenarios. Finally, a two-stage stochastic model is applied to solve a day-ahead scheduling problem in mixed-integer linear programming by GAMS. Consequently, the effect of demand response in the reduction of operation cost is demonstrated.

The integration of renewable energy sources into power systems presents significant challenges, including short-term energy supply-demand imbalances and frequency fluctuations. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an improved security-constrained unit commitment model that accurately captures the dynamic frequency response of both inertia-based synchronous generators and converter-interfaced generators. In particular, the pivotal role of energy storage systems (ESS) in providing rapid-response capabilities for frequency regulation is highlighted. a reformulated Markov decision process and a deep reinforcement learning algorithm are developed for optimal unit commitment. A case study on IEEE 39-bus system confirms the effectiveness of the proposed approach in ensuring frequency stability and economic efficiency, simultaneously demonstrating the improvement in frequency dynamics with ESS involvement in frequency regulation.

Under the background of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization strategy, the proportion of new energy power generation is increasing, and its randomness and volatility are increasingly prominent. At the same time, extreme weather frequently increases load fluctuation, and the development of new power system is faced with problems such as insufficient balance support capacity and power supply shortage. Various resources involved in power dispatching have their own characteristics of multi time scale response. The longer the time scale considered by power dispatching, the greater the response capacity provided by dispatching resources. By extending the scheduling cycle to weeks and months, scheduling resources can be configured in advance. This paper analyzes the response characteristics of dispatching resources, and introduces the multi-time scale coordinated optimal dispatch framework. Then optimal dispatch model is proposed. The case study based on the actual data of provincial power grid shows the effectiveness of the proposed method and model.

Due to influences by power system restructuring, fuel price uncertainties, future demand forecasting, and utilities and transmission lines availability, demand response (DR) programs for consumers have gained more attention. One important DR scheme is the emergency demand response program (EDRP). This paper focuses on simultaneous implementation of security-constraint unit commitment (SCUC) and EDRP by using an economic model. Moreover, a stochastic optimization method is employed for realistic modelling. Since the combined implementation of SCUC and EDRP results in a complex nonlinear optimization problem, a linearization method to ensure computational efficiency is used. The proposed model is formulated as two-stage Stochastic Mixed-Integer Programming ( SMIP) model implemented using GAMS. The implemented model is tested on three case studies using the IEEE 24-bus system. Results are analyzed with a focus on the impact of demand elasticity and electricity prices.

Predicting power system component outages in response to an imminent hurricane plays a major role in pre event planning and post-event recovery of the power system. An exact prediction of components states, however, is a challenging task and cannot be easily performed. In this paper, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based method is proposed to help estimate the components states in response to anticipated path and intensity of an imminent hurricane. Components states are categorized into three classes of damaged, operational, and uncertain. The damaged components along with the components in uncertain class are then considered in multiple contingency scenarios of a proposed Event-driven security-constrained unit commitment (E-SCUC), which considers the simultaneous outage of multiple components under an N-m-u reliability criterion. Experimental results on the IEEE 118-bus test system show the merits and the effectiveness of the proposed SVM classifier and the E-SCUC model in improving power system resilience in response to extreme events.

With increasing penetration levels of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, electric power systems need flexible resources that can provide fast-response ramping capabilities to counter the variability and uncertainty of renewable generation. Although the California Independent System Operator and Midcontinent System Operator have lauched ramp products, determining how wind power can participate using their flexible ramping models is still largely unclear. This paper proposes a security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model considering a flexible ramping constraint that represents the system's flexible ramping requirements that account for the net load probabilistic forecast uncertainty. Through this explicit modeling of uncertainty, the true cost of the flexible ramp service can be determined after solving the SCUC problem. In addition, the potential of wind power to provide operating reserves is analyzed. Numerical case studies demonstrate that with wind power providing both flexible ramping products and operating reserves, the system operating costs and ramp shortages will be reduced significantly.

The installed capacity of wind driven generators in New York State is projected to grow from about 200 MW to as much as 2800 MW over the next ten years. Wind power promises an inconstant and largely uncontrollable source of clean and inexpensive energy. Integration of this attractive but relatively volatile resource in an electricity market demands careful consideration of the forecasting, scheduling, financial settlement, and performance monitoring functions that are inherent to the operation of an electricity market. This paper examines these issues in the context of a two-settlement electricity market such as the one operated in New York by the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO).

This paper presents a software tool, PSS (TM) LMP1, for simulating true energy market operation conditions and prices using security-constrained unit commitment and security-constrained Economic Dispatch. PSS (TM) LMP has been integrated with Siemens PTI's world-wide used transmission 2 planning tool, PSS (TM) E-2, allowing for full transmission network modeling and providing a fundamental and essential foundation for LMP analysis. PSS (TM) LMP analyzes the effects of network conditions and determines LMP at each node as well as energy production cost components. The core function of PSS (TM) LMP is a 24-hour simulation for LMP-based electricity markets or energy price forecasting. Simulation results can be viewed as tables, displayed on a diagram of the network, or presented as a time-series plot. In conjunction with PSS (TM) E, PSS (TM) LMP can be used as a complimentary tool for market-based transmission planning.

This paper presents an outline of the operational challenges arising from stochastic, non-synchronous generation, as well as the tools which can be used to cost-effectively enhance operational security.
