Structural performance of the GFRP-reinforced precast concrete no-gap boat ramp plank

This study evaluated a new design of boat ramp planks called the "no-gap" concept where individual precast concrete planks reinforced internally with glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) are linked through GFRP rods to provide integrity. The no-gap boat ramp provides an efficient boating infrastructure with reduced maintenance and ease of manufacturing and assembly process, as well as mitigates the risk of injury, as it removes the groutfilled gap that often requires repairs. Five large-scale GFRP-reinforced precast concrete planks with one, two and three segments were manufactured, assembled, and tested to evaluate their performance including load-carrying capacity, strain behaviour, cracking propagation, and failure mechanisms. The study revealed that the presence of the GFRP rod can improve the post-failure behaviour of the GFRP-reinforced precast concrete plank segment. Under flexural-shear loading, joint opening, stress concentration on the rod, and concrete crushing at the joint region were observed. Under only shear loading conditions, the no-gap plank displayed increased joint rotation and stiffness with interlaminar failure of the rod. The gaps in the joint have a negative effect on the flexural performance of the segmental plank, resulting in 37 % and 23 % reductions in initial stiffness and load-carrying capacity, respectively. The numerical model which considers the non-linearity of the concrete, accurately describes the behaviour of the no-gap concrete segmental plank.

Method for Checking the Cyclicity of the Microrelief of the Titanium Alloy Self-Organized Laser-Treated Surface

The morphology of relief formations on the surface of a titanium alloy treated with a femtosecond laser pulse for cyclicity has been evaluated. An assumption is introduced about the presence of a segmentcyclic structure, which has a spatial repeatability formed by segment-cycles. In addition to the segment structure, a rhythmic structure with an constant or variable rhythm is also considered based on a mathematical model of a cyclic random process (stochastic case). A method has been developed for checking the cyclicity of the formed relief formations, which makes it possible to evaluate the morphology of the resulting surface and its statistical characteristics.

Interfacial behavior of segmental concrete-filled Basalt FRP tube under cyclic loading

A segmental concrete-filled basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) tube was proposed, whose lightweight characteristic promoted convenient bridge column transportation and construction. A special connecting component between the adjacent BFRP segments ensured effective transfer of sectional forces. Four specimens, including three segmental specimens and one comparative integral concrete-filled BFRP tube, were tested to investigate the mechanical performance of the BFRP tube under cyclic loading. Damage patterns, load-deformation response, and strain development were observed, showing that the segmental concrete-filled BFRP tube presented satisfactory load-carrying and deformation capacities. Further, the connecting component effectively guaranteed a satisfactory hysteretic performance. Based on the test results, the overall load-carrying capacity was mainly determined by the moment resistance of the interface. Furthermore, the segmental structure weakened the confining effect on the core concrete, though applying multiple stirrups could compensate for the reduced confining effect. Finally, design methods were proposed for the connecting component.

While discrete latent variable models have had great success in self-supervised learning, most models assume that frames are independent. Due to the segmental nature of phonemes in speech perception, modeling dependencies among latent variables at the frame level can potentially improve the learned representations on phonetic-related tasks. In this work, we assume Markovian dependencies among latent variables, and propose to learn speech representations with neural hidden Markov models. Our general framework allows us to compare to self-supervised models that assume independence, while keeping the number of parameters fixed. The added dependencies improve the accessibility of phonetic information, phonetic segmentation, and the cluster purity of phones, showcasing the benefit of the assumed dependencies. © 2023 IEEE.

Faroese Preaspiration: A Nucleus/Onset Interaction Analysis

This paper focuses on Faroese preaspiration, a phenomenon observed in Western Nordic and in some Eastern Nordic dialects, where fortis stops are preceded by a glottal frication noise in specific contexts. After observing all environments where the mechanism is triggered, I provide phonological representations of the phenomena based on Government Phonology 2.0. In this model, the segmental structures contain melody but also space, which allows for intersegmental relations such as lengthening, even without adding new morphological material. As preaspiration depends on the vowel preceding the fortis stop-more precisely, on its vocalic quality and length-I propose analyzing preaspiration as a spreading of the fortis consonant toward the vowel on the left. In doing so, I provide a unified analysis of all environments in which preaspiration occurs.*

A Novel High-Efficiency Segmented Design Method for High-Power Serpentine Shaped Mode Converter

A segmented design scheme based on the iterative approach is proposed for the design of high-power serpentine shaped TM01-TE11 mode converter. It is found that the maximum electric field strength ( $E_{\mathrm {max}}$ ) in a serpentine shaped mode converter is related to the power ratio of the TM01 and TE11 modes at crux positions where the two modes have phase difference of $n\pi $ . Moreover, the bending direction of the serpentine axis at the crux positions needs to be adjusted to ensure high-efficiency power conversion from TM01 to TE11. By dividing the serpentine converter into several segments at the crux positions, and specifying the power ratio of the TM01 and TE11 modes, an improved iterative method using phase self-adaption and phase normalization is proposed for the design of the segmented serpentine structures with the desired $E_{\mathrm {max}}$ . For demonstration, a tri-bend TM01-TE11 mode converter was designed at $X$ -band for the specified $E_{\mathrm {max}}$ of 5 GW power input. Both the simulated and tested results of the conversion efficiency and electric field distribution are consistent with the theoretical predictions. Due to a quick estimation of the maximum power handling capacity of a serpentine shaped mode converter with arbitrary diameter, the proposed method has the merits of quick convergence and high computation efficiency.

The formalization of metathesis has long been a problem for phonological theories: specific analyses have typically been subject to the criticism that while being descriptively adequate, they could not explain the process, let alone address the question of what types of metathesis are possible, and what types are not. In this paper we explore previous approaches to metathesis, as in SPE and autosegmental phonology, and argue that Optimality Theory is a better candidate to account for processes of this type, on the basis of a fully productive metathesis process found in Modern Georgian.
