Although segmentation is an important process in image classification, selecting among different segmentors and their parameters is a difficult task. This work proposes a reference free index that returns the quality of segmentation, considering the classes that the user intends to classify. Considering a gaussian distribution, this index was tested to evaluate segmentations of an optical simulated image, a LANDSAT5/TM image in a Brazilian Amazon area and its derived fraction image. index results presented higher values for segmentations more similar to the reference image, and also good agreement with overall accuracy values when classifying the images.

Deficient nuclear segmentation and abnormal chromatin condensation define Pelger-Huet anomaly of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Next to the hereditary irreversible form, acquired forms both reversible and irreversible have been described. We describe three transplant patients who were all investigated for a left shift in the absence of symptoms or signs of infection and in whom acquired reversible Pelger-Huet anomaly was discovered. The abnormal PMN phenotype was induced by mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). MMF is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the development of the anomaly. In our three patients a dose-response effect was observed regarding plasma MMF concentration and severity of neutrophil dysplasia. Except for one slightly elevated value, the patients' plasma MMF levels were within the therapeutic range. None of the patients, one who was neutropenic at presentation and two who were non-neutropenic, developed infectious complications. From our three cases as well as those of other authors, we identify previous graft rejection episodes as a potential predisposing factor for the development of PHA. In the first patient, drug withdrawal led to normalization of PMN morphology. In the other two patients, the left shift disappeared after dose reduction. In these latter two patients, a form of desensitization to the effect of MMF on neutrophils was observed following re-augmentation of MMF dose. (C) 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

In order to identify valuable user behavior and value characteristics, a large user segmentation method based on Affinity Propagation(AP) and K-means algorithm is proposed. First of all, from the existing indicators to extract the key sub-indicators, and consider the recent and long-term power consumption rate of electricity, put forward to assess the development potential of large users of the breakdown of indicators;Secondly, the AP and K-means are combined to solve the problem and finding the initial clustering center and the number of clusters, at the same time, it avoids the problem that the K-means clustering is easy to fall into the local optimum;finally, the user data of a region in Zhejiang Province is analyzed and verified, and the proposed method is feasible.

This work presents a method for the detection of mutual phase synchronization in nonstationary time series. We show how the application of a cluster algorithm that considers spatiotemporal structures of data follows from the general condition of phase-synchronized data. In view of the topology of phasic data, we reformulate the K-means cluster algorithm on a flat torus and apply a segmentation index derived in an earlier work [A. Hutt and H. Riedel, Physica D 177, 203 (2003)]. This index is extended by means of averaging in order to reflect phase synchronization in ensembles of multivariate time series. The method is illustrated using simulated multivariate phase dynamics and arrays of chaotic systems, in which temporal segments of phase-synchronized states are registered. A comparison with results from an existing bivariate synchronization index reveals major advantages of our method.
