The severity of glaucoma can be observed by categorising glaucoma diseases into several classes based on a classification process. The two most suitable parameters, cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) and peripapillary atrophy (PPA), which are commonly used to identify glaucoma are utilized in this study to strengthen the classification. First, an active contour snake (ACS) is employed to retrieve both optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) values, which are required to calculate the CDR. Moreover, Otsu segmentation and thresholding techniques are used to identify PPA, and the features are then extracted using a grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). An advanced segmentation technique, combined with an improved classifier called dynamic ensemble selection (DES), is proposed to classify glaucoma. Because DES is generally used to handle an imbalanced dataset, the proposed model is expected to detect glaucoma severity and determine the subsequent treatment accurately. The proposed model obtains a higher mean accuracy (0.96) than the deep learning-based U-Net (0.90) when evaluated using three datasets of 250 retinal fundus images (200 training, 50 testings) based on the 5-fold cross-validation scheme.

This paper presents a novel technique for the numerical modeling of three-dimensional waveguide components. The component is preliminary segmented into boxed building blocks, and then the generalized admittance matrix of each building block is determined by the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method. The kernel of the integral equation is the Green's function of the box, which is efficiently calculated by using the Ewald technique. Finally, the admittance matrices of the building blocks are cascaded to retrieve the frequency response of the whole component. The analysis of a dual-band orthomode transducer is reported as an example, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A novel approach for the analysis of inhomogeneous and lossy microwave circuits is presented in this paper. The proposed technique rely on the segmentation of the structure into homogeneous boxed building blocks. The frequency behavior of each block is represented by a generalized admittance matrix relating the RWG basis functions adopted to expand the magnetic surface current on interconnection surfaces. The generalized admittance matrices are determined in the form of a pole-expansion by the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method, adopting the Ewald technique to efficiently calculate the Green's function of the box. The frequency response of the whole component is obtained by cascading the admittance matrices of the building blocks. The analysis of two waveguide components is reported and discussed to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed technique.

Flexural response of isotropic, orthotropic, and cross-ply laminated shear deformable plates has been presented in this paper using a new first-order shear deformation theory. The theory involves only two primary unknown functions, as compared to widely used Mindlin's first-order shear deformation theory, which involves three primary unknown functions. This reduction in the number of primary variables make this theory simple and efficient to use. The principle of minimum total potential energy is utilised to obtain governing differential equations and variationally consistent boundary conditions. The Le acute accent vy-type plates accompanied by the generalised segmentation technique is used to obtain the closed form analytical solution of isotropic, orthotropic and cross-ply laminated shear deformable plates with two opposite edges simply-supported and the other two edges having different combination of simply-supported, clamped and free boundary conditions. Comparative studies are performed to show the efficacy of the present theory. Effects of plate length-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio and modulus ratio on transverse displacement and in-plane normal stresses are also presented and discussed. New benchmark solutions in the form of parametric study are presented for the future reference.

Neuroscience is a swiftly progressing discipline that aims to unravel the intricate workings of the human brain and mind. Brain tumors, ranging from non-cancerous to malignant forms, pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to the presence of more than 100 distinct types. Effective treatment hinges on the precise detection and segmentation of these tumors early. We introduce a cutting-edge deep-learning approach employing a binary convolutional neural network (BCNN) to address this. This method is employed to segment the 10 most prevalent brain tumor types and is a significant improvement over current models restricted to only segmenting four types. Our methodology begins with acquiring MRI images, followed by a detailed preprocessing stage where images undergo binary conversion using an adaptive thresholding method and morphological operations. This prepares the data for the next step, which is segmentation. The segmentation identifies the tumor type and classifies it according to its grade (Grade I to Grade IV) and differentiates it from healthy brain tissue. We also curated a unique dataset comprising 6,600 brain MRI images specifically for this study. The overall performance achieved by our proposed model is 99.36%. The effectiveness of our model is underscored by its remarkable performance metrics, achieving 99.40% accuracy, 99.32% precision, 99.45% recall, and a 99.28% F-Measure in segmentation tasks.

Memristor-transistor hybrid ternary content addressable memory using ternary memristive memory cell

A memristor-transistor hybrid ternary content addressable memory (MTCAM) with a memristor-based ternary memory cell is proposed. New emerging devices like memristors have recently been explored to overcome the limitations of CMOS-based memory circuits. The memristor is used as a binary memory cell in these MTCAM designs to replace a CMOS-based memory cell. This proposed design used a memristor as a ternary memory cell by exploiting its variable resistance characteristics. The associated wiring is reduced almost by a factor of 2 as a ternary cell is used instead of two binary cells. Area efficiency is further enhanced as the MTCAM cell is comprised of two transistors and two memristors (2T2M). A segmentation technique of match line along with a robust write/search operation method is presented to enhance the search speed of the proposed MTCAM. Simulation based on a mathematical model of memristor is presented and analysed using 65 nm TSMC MOS model parameters. Corner simulations and Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to substantiate the robustness of the design against process variation. Simulation results show the worst search delay of 0.75 ns and the energy/bit/search of 0.866 fJ for the 128 x 128 bit MTCAM.

GENERAL LOCALIZED JUNCTION MODEL IN THE ANALYSIS OF WIRE-TO-PLATE JUNCTIONS

A new entire-domain Galerkin method for the analysis of wire-to-plate junctions is presented. The formulation avoids additional attachment modes for modelling the junctions. Instead, a specific segmentation technique of wires and plates is proposed, based on the so-called general localised junction model. According to this model, any localised junction can be considered to consist of ends of curvilinear cylinders (wires) and adjacent sides of generalised quadrangles (plates), situated in an electrically small junction domain. The interconnections of the wire ends and plate sides can be omitted from the geometrical model, provided the current expansions for the wires and quadrangles are adopted in such a manner that the total current flowing out from the junction is zero. Numerical results obtained by the proposed method indicate that its efficiency is comparable to that based on the application of attachment modes. In addition, it enables a unified treatment of practically any junction, even those for which attachment modes have not yet been developed, whereas the classical approach requires a specific attachment mode to be defined for individual junction types.

An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the usual visual inspection technique. Therefore, it can be considered an extremely useful tool for calibrating predictive models for arrangements of granular media based on computer simulations.
