Solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs)have attracted a great deal of interest because they have the highest efficiency without using any noble metal as catalysts among all the fuel cell ***,traditional SOFCs suffer from having a higher volume,current leakage,complex connections,and difficulty in gas *** solve these problems,Rolls-Royce has fabricated a simple design by stacking cells in series on an insulating porous support,resulting in the tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells(SIS-SOFCs),which achieved higher output *** work systematically reviews recent advances in the structures,preparation methods,perform-ances,and stability of tubular SIS-SOFCs in experimental and numerical ***,the challenges and future development of tubular SIS-SOFCs are also *** findings of this work can help guide the direction and inspire innovation of future development in this field.

Evaluating the operating characteristics of tubular segmented-in-series(SIS) solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) holds significant guiding value for designing, preparing, integrating, and operating tubular cells and stacks. This study examines a 30-cell tubular SIS SOFC and assesses the distribution of its physical parameters, such as axial voltage and temperature. As well as the operating characteristics under sensitive disturbances such as current, airflow, anode inert gas flow (N2), anode inlet temperature(Tain), cathode inlet temperature(Tcin), and hydrogen flow, and proposes a characterization equation for the cell average surface temperature(Tavercs). The results indicate heterogeneity in the axial electrochemical reactions of tubular SIS SOFC and the reaction intensity, voltage, and temperature, decrease along the direction of the fuel flow.

Performance prediction of tubular segmented-in-series SOFCs: An equivalent steady model for degradation

Degradation is a major factor limiting the large-scale commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, a multi-physical coupled-fields model of a tubular segmented-in-series SOFC (T-SIS-SOFC) is developed. The model incorporates degradation phenomena such as anode Ni coarsening, cathode LSM migration, and YSZ electrolyte phase transitions. The internal material properties of a single cell and a 60-cell T-SIS-SOFC over 20,000 h is achieved are evaluated. The process of performance loss and heat generation caused by current distribution changes due to material degradation is revealed. The effects of differences in the initial temperature distribution on degradation rates and performance changes at various positions is investigated. Under galvanostatic mode with higher temperature, material properties degrades faster, but the output power decreases more slowly. Degradation occurs more rapidly under potentiostatic mode, but the efficiency of converting chemical energy into electrical energy remains largely unaffected. A reduction in temperature can effectively reduce degradation rate. A decrease in temperature of 50 degrees C results in a decrease in degradation rate of over 50%.

Design of a tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC): One-dimensional steady state modeling

In this study, a one-dimensional steady-state model has been established for rapidly predicting the output performance of tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which will be used for the structural and material design of T-SIS-SOFC to improve output performance. This model simplifies ohmic polarization, activation polarization, and concentration polarization into equivalent resistances, while also considering the impact of contact resistance, interconnects, supports, and current collectors on the output performance. After validation, the model has proven reliable in predicting the output performance of cells with different structures. For a single cell, ohmic polarization is the primary influencing factor, and increasing conductivity through methods such as raising temperature, modifying materials, or reducing thickness can significantly reduce ohmic polarization. For the entire tubular SOFC system, when the total length is fixed, there exists an optimal number of cells and an optimal length for each cell. Based on the material and structure of the single cell unit employed in this paper, the maximum output power, approximately 48 W, is achieved when the number of cell units is 30.

Design of a dual-layer ceramic interconnect based on perovskite oxides for segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells

A segmented-in series (SIS) SOFC consists of segmented unit cells connected in electrical series and shows improved stack efficiency over conventional SOFCs. In this design, a thin interconnect film provides both electrical contact and sealing between the anode of one cell and the cathode of the next;thus, it should have high conductivity and chemical/structural stability in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres as well as impermeability to gases. Here, we report a dual-layer interconnect film for SIS -SOFCs comprising perovskite-type oxides, Sr0.7La0.2TiO3 (exposed to a reducing atmosphere) and La0.8Sr0.2FeO3 (exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere). The interconnect film is not only very dense but also highly conductive and stable under SOFC operating conditions;in particular, it shows an area-specific resistance of 19.6 m Omega cm(2) at 800 similar to degrees C, which is much lower than the generally accepted limit for SOFCs. A flat-tubular SIS-SOFC fabricated using these interconnect films exhibits a power density as high as 340 mW cm(-2), which proves the feasibility of the dual-layer interconnect design. Effect of cell length on the performance of segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells fabricated using decalcomania method

segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells (SIS-SOFC) have been stacked on all sides of a porous ceramic support using decalcomania method. When cells are stacked using decalcomania method, the cell components do not penetrate into the porous support or neighboring layers, resulting in excellent interfacial bonding. The cell components formed uniform thickness as well. Since the current flows laterally in SIS-SOFC, the cells are prepared having dimensions of 8 and 5 mm in length to minimize their lateral resistance. Subsequent power output characteristics have been studied. As cell length decrease from 8 to 5 mm, the open circuit voltage and maximum power density increase. This is attributed to the lower lateral resistance due to shorter current path. Impedance analysis also shows that ohmic resistances decrease substantially with decreasing cell length. Fabrication of a Flat Tubular segmented-in-series Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Using Decalcomania Paper

A flat tubular segmented-in-series (SIS) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was fabricated using decalcomania paper. The performance of a two-cell stack with 4.5-mm-wide electrodes was investigated in a temperature range of 650-800 degrees C. The decalcomania paper allowed fabrication of the SIS-SOFC on all sides of the flat tubular support and achieve an effective electrode area larger than that obtained using typical SOFC fabrication techniques such as screen printing or slurry coating. SEM observations revealed that each component layer was flat, uniformly thick, and well adherent to adjacent layers. Measured values of open circuit voltages were very close to the theoretical values;confirming that the processing technique utilizing decalcomania paper is suitable for SIS-SOFC fabrication. The power densities of the two-cell-stack were 437.4, 375.6, 324.6, and 257.1 mWcm(-2) at 800, 750, 700 and 650 degrees C, respectively.

Changes in the mechanical properties of support materials for segmented-in-series type solid oxide fuel cells as a function of time

As the substrate materials for segmented-in-series type solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), the mechanical characteristics, such as Young's modulus, of Al2O3-NiO-YSZ, TiO2-NiO-YSZ and MgO-NiO-YSZ were examined under SOFC operating conditions. The Young's modulus for all of the samples decreased at a high temperature. For the Al2O3-NiO-YSZ samples, the behaviours of the Young's modulus changed at each process including as-sintered, 100 h reduction and 2000 h reduction. For the TiO2-NiO-YSZ samples, the Young's modulus behaviour varied between the as-sintered and reduced samples. However, further reduction did not change the behaviour of the Young's modulus. For the MgO-NiO-YSZ samples, the Young's modulus of the samples exhibited a nearly constant behaviour through the sequence of processes from as-sintered to 100 h reduction and 2000 h reduction. Based on the microstructural analysis, the compositions of the framework of the samples and the sliding of the grain boundary strongly affected the Young's modulus. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Characteristics of flat-tubular ceramic supported segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell on all sides laminating using decalcomania method

Solid oxide fuel cell components are fabricated using the decalcomania method. Then a flattened tubular segmented-series solid oxide fuel cell (SIS-SOFC) stack is prepared on each side (front, right, left and back sides) of ceramic support with a uniform thickness. SIS-SOFC laminated on all sides of the porous ceramic support show 2.6 times more active area per cell than the case involving only single side lamination. Power output increases by 2.5 times with higher open circuit voltage. This is attributed to the increase in active area per cell and sizable decrease in sheet resistance and polarization resistance by laminating the cells on all sides. For cells laminated on decalcomania paper, they show no sign of component materials penetrating through pores in ceramic support and have better interfacial bonding. A tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell with metallic interconnect films: A performance study through mathematical simulations

In a segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SIS-SOFC), an interconnect (IC) provides electrical contact and sealing between the anode of one cell and the cathode of the next. A metallic silver-glass composite (SGC) is considered a promising alternative to ceramic IC materials in SIS-SOFCs. In this work, a simulation study is performed on a tubular SIS-SOFC to assess the effectiveness of the SGC-IC design and to predict the SOFC performance characteristics for various IC geometries and conductivities. The developed model provides detailed information on cell behavior, such as the internal resistance, the potential/current distribution, and the local gas species concentration. The results demonstrate that the SGC material greatly reduces a potential drop across the IC film. Thus, it provides the following substantial advantages over conventional ceramic IC materials: (i) increased power density and (ii) a larger degree of flexibility in the cell design. Moreover, the validation test, i. e., comparison of the simulated results with the experimental data, indicates that the model could serve as a valuable tool for design optimization to achieve the required SOFC performance.
