Pooling mobile devices in vicinity as a cooperative community offers an opportunity to enable multipath transmission for multi-homed mobile devices, even when there is no multiple access coverage. Nonetheless, the available bandwidth provided by relays can be highly varying due to a range of factors such as wireless channel fading and dynamic local traffic load at relays. As a result, it is challenging to maintain a stable multipath aggregate throughput over relays. In this paper, we propose an enhancement module within the application layer for a cooperative community in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. Our extension is based on the standardized multipath transport control protocol (MPTCP) [1]. Based on relay bandwidth monitoring, a dynamic relay selection algorithm is developed for adding and deleting paths so as to ensure a stable aggregate throughput in a highly varying environment. The proposed relay selection algorithm is based on a fully polynomial-time subset-sum approximation [2]. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the proposed solution in different background traffic patterns. The simulation results well demonstrate the strengths in minimizing throughput outage, the number of active subflows, and performance variation.

In this work, we consider the device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks to support local communication needs. In particular, we focus our attention on the design of an optimal resource allocation and mode selection algorithm for both cellular and D2D users. In the design, communication mode selection for D2D users is also taken into account so that a D2D source-destination pair has an option to either directly communicate or indirectly communicate through the base station (BS). On the other hand, it is necessary and important to provide a certain level of Quality of Service (QoS) to users. The users can be further differentiated by assigning different weighting factors and QoS requirements. To this end, we formulate a problem of maximizing the weighed sum rate of all the users constrained by their power and QoS requirements. The tool that we use to handle this problem is the primal-dual technique which transforms the original problem into the equivalent problem showing lower computational complexity. The simulation results verify that our proposed scheme outperforms the previous heuristic scheme by jointly optimizing the power and resource allocation along with the communication mode selection for the D2D communication pairs.

This paper discusses radiation pattern selection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. Each receive antenna can be reconfigured to P distinct radiation patterns. We select radiation patterns in order to maximize instantaneous channel capacity. And we prove that for arbitrary correlation the maximum achievable diversity order of the pattern selection MIMO (PS-MIMO) system equals to the rank of the total correlation matrix of its full system so that the link reliability can be significantly improved. We propose a fast selection algorithm as the suboptimal solution for channel capacity maximization. For PS-MIMO systems over spatially correlated channels, we propose to use only a part of available radiation patterns based on the estimation of the correlation before performing the pattern search. Simulations are used to validate the theoretical results and illustrate the performances of proposed algorithms.

Biological characterization of causal genomic variants present in large numbers within a quantitative trait locus (QTL) interval is a challenging problem. QTL-targeted tiling paths of near-isogenic lines (NILs) are useful in fine mapping and gene cloning, and in estimating the effects of closely linked loci. However, their development is costly and involves recurrent cycles of selection-recombination-repetition in a breeding program. In the first project, a distance-based strategy for fractionating loci into tiled introgression libraries using marker-assisted backcross selection is proposed. Computer simulations were used to investigate the efficiency of the proposed selection strategy in separately producing NIL sets with, on average, 3, 1.5 and 1 cM introgressions across target QTL regions of 15 cM. The proposed distance-based strategy identified NIL sets that led to better control and elimination of linkage drag using fewer backcross generations and smaller progeny sizes. Increasing BC1 progeny size (>150) had little and increasing the number of backcross individuals per selected individual (NBSI) had significant positive effect on the genomic composition of the NILs and length of backcrossing. More NBSI and backcrossing generations were required to produce NILs with smaller (1.5 and 1 cM) when compared to the larger (3 cM) average introgression lengths. In the second project, recombination patterns across four previously identified maize photoperiod QTLs (ZmPR1-4) were evaluated based on multiple genetic backgrounds. Marker data from the first backcross generation of crosses between seven tropical and two temperate inbred lines were used. It was found that recombination rates varied between the four photoperiod QTLs. The ZmPR2 region was most recombinogenic while the ZmPR4 region was least recombinogenic among the four QTLs evaluated. The distributions of recombinations along the four ZmPR regions were consistent, and seemed to be uniform within the ZmPR2 and Zm

In this work, we propose adaptive link selection strategies for distributed estimation in diffusion-type wireless networks. We develop an exhaustive search-based link selection algorithm and a sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm that can exploit the topology of networks with poor-quality links. In the exhaustive search-based algorithm, we choose the set of neighbors that results in the smallest mean square error (MSE) for a specific node. In the sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm, a convex regularization is introduced to devise a sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm. The proposed algorithms have the ability to equip diffusion-type wireless networks and to significantly improve their performance. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithms have lower MSE values, a better convergence rate and significantly improve the network performance when compared with existing methods.

Feature selection is an effective technique for dimensionality reduction to get the most useful information from huge raw data. Many spectral feature selection algorithms have been proposed to address the unsupervised feature selection problem, but most of them fail to pay attention to the noises induced during the feature selection process. In this paper, we not only consider the feature structural learning, but also try to avoid these noises induced during the feature selection process. We utilize the feature structural learning to select the discriminant features and use the robust methods to make selected features more reliable. Furthermore, we propose a new unsupervised feature selection algorithm, namely Robust Sparse Subspace Learning Feature selection (RSS). And we employ a coordinate descendent algorithm to solve the RSS formulation. Experiments are conducted on several popular datasets to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and results show that this RSS algorithm achieves better results than traditional feature selection algorithms in most cases.

We consider a wireless sensor network (WSN) deployed over a large geographical area, where a querying node wishes to perform a estimation of a localized phenomenon. We formulate the problem as a joint optimization of sensor selection and routing structure where we minimize the estimation distortion subject to a total communication power constraint for the WSN. Two scenarios are analyzed: measurement forwarding and estimation-and-forward at the nodes. We show that the optimization problems corresponding to these scenarios are both NP-hard and we propose two approximation algorithms. First, we present a sensor selection algorithm for a predefined routing structure based on a primal relaxation and then, a greedy approximation algorithm that jointly optimizes the sensor selection and routing structure. Numerical results show good performance of these algorithms in both estimation scenarios.

In a D2D-enabled cellular system, not only can communications be relayed through the base station, but also closely located pairs are allowed to communicate directly over a D2D link, to support short-range data-intensive services. In this paper, we first formally state the problem of system throughput maximization subject to a given feasible lower bound for the users' SINRs in a D2D-enabled cellular system, and then propose a distributed joint power control and mode selection algorithm to address it. In our proposed algorithm, each transmitter with the potential of benefiting from D2D communications, selects its communication mode by comparing the effective interferences received at its serving base station and corresponding D2D receiver. Then, based on the selected mode, transmit power levels are iteratively updated in a way that the QoS requirements of all users are met, and the system throughput is enhanced as well. The simulation results show that our proposed distributed algorithm not only guarantees the minimum acceptable SINRs for all users, but also outperforms existing distributed schemes in terms of system throughput.

A simplified depth modeling mode (DMM) selection algorithm is proposed for 3D-HEVC depth intra coding. Since DMMs are designed for coding units (CUs) with edge or sharp transition, it is not efficient for smooth CU compression. Based on the observation that most CUs in a depth frame are smooth or flat, we notice most of the DMM full-Rate-Distortion (RD) search could be skipped. Using the modes in full-RD list as the skip signal, we propose a simplified DMM selection algorithm to avoid unnecessary DMM full-RD cost calculation. Since modes in full-RD list already exist, we can derive the skip signal without any additional calculation. The test result for the proposed simplified selection algorithm shows 21.8% encoding time saving with only 0.16% bitrate increasing in coded and synthesized view for All-Intra test case.
