Nowadays, to benefit from Internet access is so easy in some areas of the world as difficult in others. There are some different projects whose purpose is to extend Internet access to areas which do not have it yet. Each of these projects has unique characteristics that distinguish it from others (different transmission channels, different devices used, ...). One possible solution provides the use of a particular type of satellites called nanosatellites. Using these devices, we can have a solution to extend the network access in rural and remote areas which offers a good balance among performances, security and costs. In a network of this type ground stations (called hot spots) are deployed, which upload data destined to rural areas on nanosatellites and download data destined to Internet servers from nanosatellites. During a data connection, an Internet server that wants to reply to a request coming from a rural area has many hot spot alternatives to whom it can deliver data. The problem of choosing the "optimal" hot spot becomes important because a wrong choice could lead to a high delivery delay. We propose "HotSel": a hot spot selection algorithm able to minimize data delivery time. HotSel is simple and practical, and outperforms two other selection mechanisms used as comparison. All results have been collected by using Network Simulator 3 (NS3) and developing a module able to simulate a nanosatellite network.

Next generation of wireless broadband network such as WiMAX MMR networks and LTE Advanced support high quality multimedia services with high data transmission rate. Most of the current broadband operates at high frequency and thus has limited transmission range. Multi-hop relaying technology is seen as an efficient solution that could enhance coverage and improves system capacity. However, overall system performances worsen as the number of hop increases. Providing efficient route selection is one of the key issues to be tackled to improve overall system performance in multi-hop relay network. In this paper, we propose route selection algorithm based on channel condition for WiMAX Mobile multi-hop relay network. We conducted simulation study to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme.

This paper studies the feedback policies for opportunistic beamforming (OBF) to reduce the amount of information feeding back and select the best users. First, the feedback threshold is set up in the user terminal on the fundamental of reducing throughput of OBF. Then, only the user whose received SINR is greater than the threshold will feed back. At last, the best user and best transmitting beams are selected by the base station (BS). Simulations are carried out in fast fading channels. Results show that threshold feedback policy can select the best users and beams, improve the throughput, reduce the feedbacks.

Internet of Things (IoT) promises to be a key enabler in Smart Manufacturing and Smart Supply Chain. The IoT systems are responsible for enabling and improving the operational efficiencies of factories, plant floors, including assembly plants. These systems are characterized by reliable sensing and reporting of multiple parameters within the factory floor. Such sensing activities offer safe, efficient and optimized performance of not only the machines manufacturing the products, but also the workforce operating them. Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems could suffer from high and uneven energy consumption due to the nature of the network deployment. Such behavior is unacceptable as it not only increases the carbon footprint of the plant, but also makes the planned maintenance of IoT devices for battery replacement a huge challenge. In this paper, we propose a heuristic and opportunistic link selection algorithm, HOLA, which not only reduces the overall energy consumption of the IoT network but also balances it across the network. HOLA achieves this energy-efficiency by opportunistically offloading the IoT device data to smart-devices being carried by the workforce in the factory settings. Further, these smart-devices with multiple radio links such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G/4G LTE heuristically determine the best link to transmit the data to the Cloud based on the quality and energy cost of the link. Our experimental and simulation studies validate that HOLA can improve the energy efficiency of IIoT systems by reducing the overall energy consumption and balancing it across the network.

Gene selection algorithm by combining reliefF and mRMR

Background: Gene expression data usually contains a large number of genes, but a small number of samples. Feature selection for gene expression data aims at finding a set of genes that best discriminate biological samples of different types. In this paper, we present a two-stage selection algorithm by combining ReliefF and mRMR: In the first stage, ReliefF is applied to find a candidate gene set;In the second stage, mRMR method is applied to directly and explicitly reduce redundancy for selecting a compact yet effective gene subset from the candidate set. Results: We perform comprehensive experiments to compare the mRMR-ReliefF selection algorithm with ReliefF, mRMR and other feature selection methods using two classifiers as SVM and Naive Bayes, on seven different datasets. And we also provide all source codes and datasets for sharing with others. Conclusion: The experimental results show that the mRMR-ReliefF gene selection algorithm is very effective.

An optimal transmission channel selection algorithm based on AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) aiming at fulfilling the demand of emergency communication scenario is proposed in this paper. In the process of the algorithm, a Specifications Vector Library is set up based on communication requirement presetting, meanwhile, a Weight Vector Library is set up according to the definition of the importance of the specifications. By matching the available network channel resources and the two Vector Libraries, a communication link scheme is produced with an AHP based decision making process to strike a balance between transmission efficiency and economy under the restraint of the available communication network channel resource condition.

In a distributed network, there are multiple routing paths between source node and destination node. In order to meet certain demands of network security, selecting required firewalls in multiple routing paths and deploying appropriate rules on them are indispensable steps. Thus, in this paper, we carry on a further research on it and propose permit and deny algorithms which serve to improve the performance of network security. Then, we give theoretical proof of our algorithms. Finally, we test the effectiveness of algorithms based on a network simulation platform named mininet. The analysis of time efficiency of our algorithms and previous algorithms, as well as the comparison between them prove the high efficiency of our algorithms.

Recently, the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has been nearly matured and widely used in various fields. The combination of UAV and communication technologies, such as UAV Base Station (UAV-BS), can significantly increase the flexibility and scalability of the overall communication networks to provide more efficient communication services. While the UAV-BS improves the network service efficiency, the quality of services (QoS) in the air-to-ground communication link is highly affected unless the right users are unknown. In this paper, we propose the learning-based downlink user selection algorithm. The 3D downlink channel can be fast identified to judiciously select the users subset. In our proposed framework, we combine the k-means clustering and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that can increase the estimation accuracy of 3D wireless channels to enhance the communication service efficiency of the UAV-BS network. The field measurement results show that proposed method can achieve an average bit error rate (BER) of 3.56x10 -7 , which is better than the distance-based selection scheme that has an average of BER 2.88x10 -3 . The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in real environment are proved, experimentally.

Extracting inherent patterns from large data using decompositions of data matrix by a sampled subset of exemplars has found many applications in machine learning. We propose a computationally efficient algorithm for adaptive exemplar sampling, called fast exemplar selection (FES). The proposed algorithm can be seen as an efficient variant of the oASIS algorithm [1]. FES iteratively selects incoherent exemplars based on the exemplars that are already sampled. This is done by ensuring that the selected exemplars forms a positive definite Gram matrix which is checked by exploiting its Cholesky factorization in an incremental manner. FES is a deterministic rank revealing algorithm delivering a tighter matrix approximation bound. Further, FES can also be used to exactly represent low rank matrices and signals sampled from a unions of independent subspaces. Experimental results show that FES performs comparable to existing methods for tasks such as matrix approximation, feature selection, outlier detection, and clustering.

Based on the principle of the quasi-optimal satellite selection algorithm and the fast satellite selection algorithm, this paper gives a combined satellite selection algorithm. The algorithm introduces a new satellite selection strategy by considering different distributions of the similar satellite group. The computation amount of the combined algorithm is lower than quasi-optimal satellite selection algorithm. The experiment results show this algorithm can get a lower GDOP value than quasi-optimal satellite selection algorithm and close to the minimal GDOP.
