The information has always been a valuable patrimony for the information systems that every company tries to capitalize as much as possible. With the web, the amount of information is increased and several problems arise for instance for the safety of the exchanged data but also to the semantic heterogeneity: the same information is very often represented in different ways in different information systems. In this paper we present an architecture of interchange of data both within the sate information system and among different information systems founded on the ontologies in order to overcome the problem list of the heterogeneity. Ontologies, today, they seem to be the best tool useful to resolve the problem of heterogeneity, but that has not now been exploited fully.

Background: Systems biology research typically involves the integration and analysis of heterogeneous data types in order to model and predict biological processes. Researchers therefore require tools and resources to facilitate the sharing and integration of data, and for linking of data to systems biology models. There are a large number of public repositories for storing biological data of a particular type, for example transcriptomics or proteomics, and there are several model repositories. However, this silo-type storage of data and models is not conducive to systems biology investigations. Interdependencies between multiple omics datasets and between datasets and models are essential. Researchers require an environment that will allow the management and sharing of heterogeneous data and models in the context of the experiments which created them. Results: The SEEK is a suite of tools to support the management, sharing and exploration of data and models in systems biology. The SEEK platform provides an access-controlled, web-based environment for scientists to share and exchange data and models for day-to-day collaboration and for public dissemination. A plug-in architecture allows the linking of experiments, their protocols, data, models and results in a configurable system that is available 'off the shelf'. Tools to run model simulations, plot experimental data and assist with data annotation and standardisation combine to produce a collection of resources that support analysis as well as sharing. Underlying semantic web resources additionally extract and serve SEEK metadata in RDF (Resource Description Format). SEEK RDF enables rich semantic queries, both within SEEK and between related resources in the web of Linked Open data. Conclusion: The SEEK platform has been adopted by many systems biology consortia across Europe. We present the whole querying process of our ontologybased data integration proposal, that we call semantic Mediator. The global schema (a TBox) is composed of the source schemas (also Tboxes) and a taxonomy, which links the sources to each other. The querying process is based on the global-schema's structure and consists of three steps: global query rewriting, source querying and global answer building. We describe the overall distributed system and the query-rewriting algorithm. Then we present an application of such a semantic mediation, the Personae project, which is for enabling historians to share their prosopographic data from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Closed-loop PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is an approach to facilitating closing information loops between the individual phases and processes of the product lifecycle. These systems are heterogeneous, decentral and distributed throughout the network and over multiple lifecycle stakeholders. Stakeholders, and thus IT systems, may enter or leave the value chain of the product lifecycle. This means, many different applications, tools and corresponding data formats and standards are required to be integrated in a dynamic way, creating challenging data integration problems. The pervasive availability of relevant product information throughout the lifecycle for all stakeholders is required for the realisation of an efficient closed-loop PLM. Consequently, interoperability between the different IT systems is key to closed-loop PLM. Current interoperability approaches have several drawbacks in this regard. This paper focuses on the design and delivery of semantic interoperability services to meet the requirements of closed-loop PLM. The objective is to establish a general and highly flexible information exchange between different stakeholders. For this purpose, an overview over different approaches to interoperability, including Web Services, is given. Then, interoperability problems in closed-loop PLM are discussed. Subsequently, the paper details how these syntactical and semantic integration problems are currently addressed by Web Services. To resolve the hitherto unsolved problems, an extension of Web Service technology called Web Service Wrappers is proposed. Finally, the benefits of the extension are presented on basis of an exemplary closed-loop PLM use case. The exemplary use case addresses the information flow between the test process of an aircraft and its maintenance activities, bridging the gap between beginning-of-life and middle-of-life phases of the product lifecycle. Metadata is a vital factor for effective management, organization and retrieval of multimedia content. In this paper, we introduce CAMO, a new system developed jointly with Samsung to enrich multimedia metadata by integrating Linked Open data (LOD). Large-scale, heterogeneous LOD sources, e.g., DBpedia, LinkMDB and MusicBrainz, are integrated using ontology matching and instance linkage techniques. A mobile app for Android devices is built on top of the LOD to improve multimedia content browsing. An empirical evaluation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the system in the multimedia domain.

Ontology alignment is an important step in enablingcomputers to query and reason across the many linked datasets onthe semantic web. This is a difficult challenge because theontologies underlying different linked datasets can vary in termsof subject area coverage, level of abstraction, ontology modelingphilosophy, and even language. The alignment approach presentedhere centers on string similarity metrics. Nearly all ontologyalignment systems use a string similarity metric in one form oranother, but it seems that the choice of a particular metric isoften arbitrary. We begin this dissertation with the mostcomprehensive survey to date on the performance of stringsimilarity metrics and string preprocessing strategies for ontologyalignment. Based on this work we present practical guidelines forchoosing string metrics in the face of different types ofontologies and different alignment goals. Additionally, we showthat string similarity metrics alone can perform competitively withstate-of-the-art alignment systems on the most popular benchmarksin the field. One of the contributions of our string similaritymetric survey is quantification of the difference in performancebetween aligning classes and aligning properties (relations betweenclasses). Put simply: aligning properties is hard, and existingstring similarity metrics are not of great help. We therefore takeon the task of developing a new string-based alignment approachthat performs better on properties. Unfortunately, evaluating thatapproach is difficult because the only existing alignment benchmarkthat includes properties is, in our view, unrealistic since allrelations in the reference alignment are presented as completelycertain. Human experts do not have this degree of confidence whenasked to align an ontology. We therefore present a more nuancedversion of this benchmark that we have created through acombination of expert survey and crowdsourcing. data warehouse architectures rely on extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) processes for the creation of an updated, consistent and materialized view of a set of data sources. In this paper, we support these processes by proposing a tool that: (1) allows the semi-automatic definition of inter-attribute semantic mappings, by identifying the parts of the data source schemas which are related to the data warehouse schema, thus supporting the extraction process;and (2) groups the attribute values semantically related thus defining a transformation function for populating with homogeneous values the data warehouse. Our proposal couples and extends the functionalities of two previously developed systems: the MOMIS integration system and the RELEVANT data analysis system. The system has been experimented within a real scenario concerning the creation of a data warehouse for enterprises working in the beverage and food logistic area. The results showed that the coupled system supports effectively the extraction and transformation processes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sensing devices are increasingly being deployed to monitor the physical world around us. One class of application for which sensor data is pertinent is environmental decision support systems, e.g., flood emergency response. For these applications, the sensor readings need to be put in context by integrating them with other sources of data about the surrounding environment. Traditional systems for predicting and detecting floods rely on methods that need significant human resources. In this paper we describe a semantic sensor web architecture for integrating multiple heterogeneous datasets, including live and historic sensor data, databases, and map layers. The architecture provides mechanisms for discovering datasets, defining integrated views over them, continuously receiving data in real-time, and visualising on screen and interacting with the data. Our approach makes extensive use of web service standards for querying and accessing data, and semantic technologies to discover and integrate datasets. We demonstrate the use of our semantic sensor web architecture in the context of a flood response planning web application that uses data from sensor networks monitoring the sea-state around the coast of England.

Isomerous geological hazard data have four types: structural isomer, syntax isomer, system isomer and semantic isomer. Interoperability of semantic heterogenous data is a difficult issue due to its complexity and implication. Ontology not only describes exactly the meaning of concepts but also inner relationship of the concepts. So ontology can efficiently express common knowledge of specific domain by logic reasoning to get the implied relationship among concepts. Ontology is quite suitable to construct general semantic model for semantic data integration. There are three layers of geological hazard ontology: top-level ontology, domain ontology and application ontology which are used to build semantic integration and share model and differ from traditional data dictionary and metadata method. So the domain ontology plays the key role of link between top-level ontology and application ontology. Seven-step method is introduced to establish geo-hazard domain ontology. On the basis of related standards such as industry professional standard, geological hazard information processing standard and expert knowledge, geo-hazard domain ontology can be set up. Protege 3.4.4 is developed by Stanford University is used in the establishment, management and inquiry access of the ontology with formalized representation by using OWL. Based on the abundant geological hazard data of Three Gorges Area in China, geological hazard ontology is applied to realize data and application integration and resolve the problem of decision making when single hazard or group hazards occur. Ontology is used to carry out semantic sharing model to improve interoperability capacity of geological hazard information system.
