Evaluation of a prototype remote control for digital broadcasting receivers by using semantic differential method

dWe prototyped an easy-to-use user interface for digital broadcasting receivers whose features are a small number of buttons on the remote control and a consistently operable GUI menu. Two design strategies -- to lower psychological barrier in the initial stage of usage, and to avoid looking down at a remote control -- were adopted on the basis of the usability tests that we conducted. To evaluate the prototype, we conducted experiments using the semantic differential method. Two major components - 'functionality" and "appearance"-- were extracted from the results of the principal component analysis. We found that there were significant differences in the each component score between the prototype user interface and a conventional one that had many buttons. The results indicate the effectiveness of our design methodology to develop an easy-to-use user interface.

The user's preferences and views make a profound impaction on the public acceptance of the product. Both can be expressed through the study of product semantic. This article describes the application of semantic differential method to establishment and analysis the laptop bag products semantic space. Through the collection of 60 subjects' evaluation of 8 laptop bags, the semantic universe is reduced to a collection of 25 adjectives semantic by using of semantic differential method. semantic axis are defined the main component factor. The influence of subjects' number in the semantic evaluation results is also studied. The establishment of the semantic space is the first step for introducing emotional performance in products design and interaction, which would increase the success probability of products. This statistical measurement help make decisions in terms of design expression.

Some speakers have penetrating voices that can be popped out and heard clearly, even in loud noise or from a long distance. This study investigated the voice quality of the penetrating voices using factor analysis. Eleven participants scored how the voices of 124 speakers popped out from the babble noise. By assuming the score as an index of penetration, ten each of high- and low-scored speakers were selected for a rating experiment with a semantic differential method. Forty undergraduate students rated a Japanese sentence produced by these speakers using 14 bipolar 7-point scales concerning voice quality. A factor analysis was conducted using the data of 13 scales (i.e., excluding one scale of penetrating from 14 scales). Three main factors were obtained: (1) powerful and metallic, (2) feminine, and (3) esthetic. The first factor (powerful and metallic) highly correlated with the ratings of penetrating. These results suggest that penetrating voices have multi-dimensional voice quality and that the characteristics of penetrating voice related to powerful and metallic aspects of voices.

Psychological and physiological effect in humans of touching plant foliage - using the semantic differential method and cerebral activity as indicators

Background: Numerous studies have reported on the healing powers of plants and nature, but there have not been so many instances of experimental research. In particular, there are very few psychological and physiological studies using tactile stimuli. This study examines the psychological and physiological effects of touching plant foliage by using an evaluation profile of the subjects' impressions and investigating cerebral blood flow. methods: The subjects were 14 young Japanese men aged from 21 to 27 years (mean +/- standard deviation: 23.6 +/- 2.4). With their eyes closed, the subjects touched four different tactile samples including a leaf of natural pothos (Epipremnum aureum). The physiological indices were compared before and after each stimulus. Psychological indices were obtained using a 'semantic differential' method. Results: The fabric stimulus gave people 'soft' and 'rough' impressions, 'kind', 'peaceful' and 'pleasant' feelings psychologically, and a sense of physiological calm. On the other hand, the metal stimulus gave people 'cold', 'smooth' and 'hard' impressions and an image of something 'artificial'. The metal stimulus caused a stress response in human cerebral blood flow although its evaluation in terms of 'pleasant or unpleasant' was neutral. There were no remarkable differences between the stimuli of natural and artificial pothos compared with other types of stimulus psychologically. However, only the natural pothos stimulus showed a sense of physiological calm in the same appearance as the fabric stimulus. Conclusions: This study shows that people experience an unconscious calming reaction to touching a plant. It is to be concluded that plants are an indispensable element of the human environment.

To explore the user's perception of the design of air purifier outlet, eye tracking experiment and semantic differential method were adopted. According to the outlet area of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the side area and the position of the upper part, the middle part and the lower part of the side, 10 air purifier model pictures were made for experiments. By analyzing the hot zone maps and the scale scores, it is found that the samples that area accounts for 50% to 75%, with a high position are more attractive, and the evaluation of usability, preference and purchase intention are also better than other samples. Through the analysis of the results, we can grasp the design direction that meets the user's expectations and obtain the basic design principles of air purifier outlet.

Comparing AI and Human Emotional Responses to Color: A semantic differential and Word-Color Association Approach

This study investigates the ability of artificial intelligence (AI) to simulate human emotional responses to color using two established methods: semantic differential (SD) method and word-color association (WCA) approach. The SD method quantifies emotional reactions to colors through bipolar adjective pairs (e.g., warm-cool, heavy-light), while the WCA method explores associations between specific words and colors. AI responses were compared with data from human participants across various demographics. Results show that AI consistently evaluates basic emotional dimensions, such as warm-cool and heavy-light, with high accuracy, often surpassing human consistency. However, AI struggled with more subjective and culturally influenced dimensions like modern-classical and active-passive. In the WCA experiment, AI replicated many general color associations but faced challenges with complex emotions like joy and anticipation. These findings highlight AI's potential in tasks requiring standardized emotional responses but reveal its limitations in capturing nuanced human emotions, especially in culturally sensitive contexts.

Investigating Influence of Visual Elements of Arcade Buildings and Streetscapes on Place Identity Using Eye-Tracking and semantic differential methods

This study explored the overall visual elements of arcade buildings and streetscapes from the perspective of tourists and then evaluated their influence on the identity and emotion of places. The scope of the research was to take the arcade building in the port area of Shantou Small Park in Guangdong, China, and apply the eye-tracking experiment method and semantic difference method. This entailed collecting the eye-tracking data of 16 people, implementing 334 questionnaires for evaluation, verifying the correlation between the visual elements and place identity emotions, and then screening out the visual elements that affect place identity through correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that plaque text morphological richness (p = 0.045 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.146), the color brightness of plaque text (p = 0.031 < 0.01, and the regression coefficient B = 0.171), window morphological richness (p = 0.038 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.106), window color brilliance (p = 0.047 < 0.01, and regression coefficient B = 0.094), and plant color brilliance (p = 0.029 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.154) are five visual element evaluation factors that have a significant correlation with the identity and emotion of places. Although the fineness of architectural decoration is negatively correlated with place identity, it is not obviously significant. The research results provide reference for the visual control design of arcade buildings.

Kansei engineering was used to research the relationship between design elements and Kansei sensibility values in the design of earth moving machinery. The research led to several findings concerning construction machinery design that take into account the effect of such human sensibilities as the motivation to operate or acquire, or factors of psychological comfort such as familiarity, attractiveness and comfort. It is reported that design innovation has been enhanced by the use of this sensibility database. Relevance to industry Kansei engineering is used to support construction machinery design as a scientific method of incorporating human sensibilities into applied design. It is also used in market research to conduct factor analysis of high demand products by comparative evaluation using Kansei values.

The validity of VRML images as a stimulus for landscape assessment

this study, we conducted evaluation experiments by semantic differential method to examine the validity of utilizing three-dimensional (3D) computer graphic images made with virtual reality modeling language (VRML) as a stimulus for landscape assessment both in the laboratory and on the Internet. The results of the laboratory experiment and the Internet experiment were compared. In both experiments, we simulated a garden landscape at Chiba University by using VRML. With three media representing the landscape (Photographs, Static images of VRML and Walk-Through images by VRML), we recorded respondents' impressions of each scene. Their responses to the three stimuli were analyzed statistically with profile analysis, ANOVA and T-test. We also asked respondents which media best represented the actual landscape. The results of the profile analysis in the laboratory experiment were similar to those of the Internet experiment. The level of reality was the order of the Photographs, Walk-Through images and Static images in both experiments. The results showed that the VRML images could be used as an effective stimulus for landscape assessment both on the Internet and in the laboratory. The level of reality of Walk-Through images in the Internet experiment was almost the same as that of photographs. The results also indicated that respondents realized garden landscapes easily by Walk-Through simulation using VRML. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Perceptual factors underlying user preferences toward product form of mobile phones

This study examined the relationship between user preference perception of mobile phones and their form design elements. Subjects were asked to judge 26 mobile phone designs by using a user preference rating scale for Il image words. The determining Factors for user preference, including image words for design trends and product design elements, were specified through the semantic differential method, It was found that users prefer mobile phone designs with soft and compact images. Design reference models composed of relative weights of design elements were then proposed for specific design trends. In accordance with the design reference model, optimal solutions For preference and design trends of "soft" and "compact" were obtained through a specific algorithm. Concrete examples were illustrated and verified. The user's preference database can serve as the styling benchmark to help designers adopt a proper design and development perspective for the intended end users. Relevance to industry Important design elements and design trends related to the user's preference for mobile phones were extracted from the study. The optimal design solutions obtained from the database can serve as the styling benchmark for designers and managers in making design strategy, by which the time and cost of product development can be reduced, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
