The Ming Dynasty is renowned for its rich cultural and artistic achievements, which had a profound impact on various aspects of Chinese society, including fashion and clothing. A notable feature of Ming dynasty clothing was the intricate dragon patterns adorning it. These patterns were not just decorative elements, but also carried profound symbolic meanings. This paper aims to explore the semantic function of dragon patterns on Ming dynasty clothing, delving into the cultural significance and symbolism associated with these designs. The focus of this study is on the semantics of the visual composition of dragon patterns in Ming dynasty clothing, that is, the implications and representation of their meaning. An analysis of pictorial data was conducted from a semantic perspective, including the visual aesthetics, usage, and cultural significance of the dragon patterns. The dragon patterns of the Ming Dynasty encapsulate Chinese traditional aesthetic design, cultural beliefs, and traditional rituals, becoming a representation of China's rich history and traditional heritage.

Time setting errors in the Clock Drawing Test are associated with both semantic and executive deficits

The common requirement to set the time to "10 past 11" on the Clock Drawing Test is intended to elicit a stimulus bound response (SBR), in which the responder is "pulled" to the salient stimulus "10," resulting in hands set at "10 before 11." SBRs are considered markers of executive dysfunction, although this assumption has not yet been validated. We compared SBR and other time-setting errors on inhibitory control tests, hypothesizing that they represent related constructs. The role of semantic dysfunction in the formation of those errors was also investigated. We examined baseline test performance of participants with Mild Cognitive Impairment or a history of depression, and control participants, enrolled in a dementia prevention study. Among 258 participants, we identified clocks with SBRs (n = 16), other time errors (n = 22), or no errors at all (n = 42). Performance between the groups with SBRs and other time-setting errors did not differ on any of the executive tests, and both error groups performed significantly worse than the No Error group on the semantic tests. Control for covariates further supported semantic and executive components in time-setting errors. Both semantic and inhibitory control deficits may underlie time representation errors in general.

Objective:Previous findings suggest that time setting errors (TSEs) in the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) may be related mainly to impairments in semantic and executive function. Recent attempts to dissociate the classic stimulus-bound error (setting the time to "10 to 11" instead of "10 past 11") from other TSEs, did not support hypotheses regarding this error being primarily executive in nature or different from other time setting errors in terms of neurocognitive correlates. This study aimed to further investigate the cognitive correlates of stimulus-bound errors and other TSEs, in order to trace possible underlying cognitive ***:We examined cognitive test performance of participants with preliminary diagnoses associated with mild cognitive impairment. Among 490 participants, we identified clocks with stimulus-bound errors (n = 78), other TSEs (n = 41), other errors not related to time settings (n = 176), or errorless clocks (n = 195).Results:No differences were found on any dependent measure between the stimulus-bound and the other TSErs groups. Group comparisons suggested TSEs in general, to be associated with lower performance on various cognitive measures, especially on semantic and working memory measures. Regression analysis further highlighted semantic and verbal working memory difficulties as being the most prominent deficits associated with these ***:TSEs in the CDT may indicate underlying deficits in semantic function and working memory. In addition, results support previous findings related to the diagnostic value of TSEs in detecting cognitive impairment.

Headlines for summarizing news or attracting readers' attention? Comparing news headlines in South Korean newspapers with theNew York Times

This study examined whether the headlines of newspapers in South Korea and theNew York Timesdiffered in terms of the semantic function - that is, summarizing news stories and the pragmatic function - that is, attracting readers' attention. TheNew York Timesis regarded as one of the news organizations that practices quality journalism, yet it also faces the pressure of market-driven journalism that focuses more on financial interests than the public interest. News organizations, popular as well as quality newspapers, have become unprecedentedly competitive in the new media context, pressured to increase audience attention, possibly influencing quality papers to emphasize the pragmatic function of attracting audiences by employing more sensational headlines. A content analysis of 749 news articles, which compared 10 newspapers in South Korea with theNew York Timesin the United States, showed that newspapers in South Korea more frequently employed headlines that highlighted the pragmatic function. Specifically, this study operationalized the semantic function to include headlines with factual information - that is, Who, When, Where, What, Why, and How - while the pragmatic function measured the extent to which headlines included four attracting devices - metaphors, adverbs, direct quotations, and questions. Findings of this study showed that only 4.9 percent of the headlines included more than four items of factual information among the Who, When, Where, What, Why, and How, whereas 74.9 percent of the headlines included more than one attracting device. Compared to theNew York Times, the Korean newspapers were more likely to employ adverbs and direct quotations.

With an expanding number of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease(AD),which not only threatens the happiness of patients' family,but also becomes a substantial burden for the healthcare system worldwide,much attention has been paid to the deficits of linguistic function over the course of AD,and connected language analysis has been utilized as a method of assessing expressive linguistic performance for a long *** previous studies focus on picture description tasks in AD,which could provide a simple approach to disease monitoring in clinical scenarios and ***-increasing evidence reveals that changes in cerebral blood flow(CBF) can be identified before detecting the clinical symptoms of *** vivo measurement of CBF via arterial spin labelling(ASL) magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) may have the potential to become a clinical tool for early detection and characterization of AD *** we review previous studies on picture description tasks and ASL-MRI,discuss the potential value of these tasks for AD diagnosis,and propose the importance of finding potential biomarkers for future research.

In this paper, we present an existing simple domain-specific language for representing the motion of a robot in an orthogonal two-dimensional system and we define its natural semantics. The language contains basic statements for moving the robot in specified directions, actually without flow control constructs such as a loop or conditional. In our approach, we show how to extend the semantic definition for a given language. We define natural semantics for both basic and extended (modified) versions of a language. Our new method of natural semantics constructed in this way becomes a natural part of the spectrum of semantic methods for a given type of languages. The achieved results will be included as a new and current topic in the course Formal semantics as a support in the education of young IT experts. A correct method with proven and verified properties is also a great assumption for the future construction of visual semantic technologies to support university education.

Antonymic Discourse functions and Manipulation: A Corpus Analysis of Present-Day French

The study of the discourse functions of antonymy was developed mainly by Steven Jones (Antonymy: a corpus-based perspective. Routledge, London, 2002;Antonyms in english. Construals, constructions and canonicity. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2012), who classifies antonymic co-occurrences in English into ten categories, based on the different discourse functions they can fulfil. On the basis of a similar study of antonymic discourse functions in French, this paper explores how two opposites used in the same sentence exploit our thought processes to influence the way we conceptualise the world. It focuses on sentences extracted from the newspaper Le Monde (1987-2006 and 2009-2011) in which two antonyms are used in co-presence. Through the analysis of these utterances, this paper describes the discourse functions of antonymy in French and shows how the semantic and syntactic roles of co-present antonyms determine the semantico-referential functions they perform. I then analyse how the two major (groups of) functions, the ancillary function and the coordination functions, identified in English journalistic texts by Steven Jones, produce meaning effects in French texts, and how the mechanisms underlying these functions allow opposites to manipulate us.

Objectives: Little is known about the very long-term cognitive outcome in patients with childhood-onset epilepsy. The aim of this unique prospective population-based cohort study was to examine cognitive outcomes in aging participants with childhood-onset epilepsy (mean onset age = 5.3 years) five decades later (mean age at follow-up = 56.5 years). Methods: The sample consisted of 48 participants with childhood-onset epilepsy and 48 age-matched healthy controls aged 48-63 years. Thirty-six epilepsy participants were in remission and 12 continued to have seizures. Cognitive function was examined with 11 neuropsychological tests measuring language and semantic function, episodic memory, and learning, visuomotor function, executive function, and working memory. Results: The risk of cognitive impairment was very high in participants with continuing seizures;odds ratio (OR) = 11.7 (95% confidence interval [CI] (2.8, 49.6), p = .0008). They exhibited worse performances across measures of language and semantic function, and visuomotor function compared to participants with remitted epilepsy and healthy controls. In the participants with remitted epilepsy, the risk of cognitive impairment was somewhat elevated, but not statistically significant;OR = 2.6 (95% CI [0.9, 7.5], p = .08).Conclusions: Our results showed that the distinction of continued versus discontinued seizures was critical for determining long-term cognitive outcome in childhood-onset epilepsy. Few participants in remission exhibited marked cognitive impairment compared to age-matched peers. However, a subgroup of participants with decades long active epilepsy, continuous seizure activity and anti-epileptic drug (AED) medication, showed clinically significant cognitive impairment and are thus in a more precarious position when entering older age.

An approach is proposed to solve linguistic multi-attribute decision making problems with the risk preference of the decision maker(DM).Firstly,a generalized linguistic term set(GLTS) is defined based on a semantic function to simulate some kinds of linguistic term sets such as the uniform and symmetric linguistic term set(LTS),the non-uniform and asymmetric LTS,the uniform and asymmetric LTS and the non-uniform and symmetric ***,a method of calculating risk parameters is presented to determine the type of the DM's risk ***,the GLTS has six properties,and the corresponding proofs are ***,a numerical example about the company investment is proposed to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method given in this paper.

Embodied semantics theory asserts that the meaning of action-related words is neurally represented through networks that overlap with or are identical to networks involved in sensory-motor processing. While some studies supporting this theory have focused on Chinese characters, less attention has been paid to their semantic radicals. Indeed, there is still disagreement about whether these radicals are processed independently. The present study investigated whether radicals are processed separately and, if so, whether this processing occurs in sensory-motor regions. Materials consisted of 72 high-frequency Chinese characters, with 18 in each of four categories： hand-action verbs with and without hand-radicals, and verbs not related to hand actions, with and without hand-radicals. Twenty-eight participants underwent functional MRI scans while reading the characters. Compared to characters without hand-radicals, reading characters with hand-radicals activated the right medial frontal gyrus. Verbs involving hand-action activated the left inferior parietal lobule, possibly reflecting integration of information in the radical with the semantic meaning of the verb. The findings may be consistent with embodied semantics theory and suggest that neural representation of radicals is indispensable in processing Chinese characters.
