Metal-organic frameworks-based nanozyme sensor array for the discrimination of biogenic amines and detection of histamine

Biogenic amines (BAs) are hazardous substances found in fishery products that are closely associated with fish spoilage and threaten food safety. Traditional chromatographic methods for detecting BAs are expensive, complex, and time-consuming. In this study, we developed a nanozyme-based sensor array to efficiently discriminate between four types of BAs and sensitively detect histamine. Copper-, cerium-, and manganese-based metal-organic frameworks with excellent peroxidase-like activities were employed as sensor elements. Because the catalytic activities of metal-organic frameworks could be modified by different BAs to varying degrees, the sensor array could generate a distinct colorimetric response pattern (fingerprint) for each BA. Based on this principle, the sensor array accurately discriminated BAs over a wide concentration range (10-1000 mu M). Histamine could be distinguished down to 1 mu M and detected with a detection limit of 4.28 mu M within 20 min. In addition, mixtures of BAs, target BAs, interfering substances, and BAs in fishery product samples were well discriminated. Furthermore, our sensor array could also effectively distinguish the freshness of fish samples. This work might offer a useful strategy for the discrimination and detection of BAs and could positively contribute to food safety and public health.

Building and improving the monitoring technology system for newly emerging contaminants with a positive attitude is the first step to enhance governance capacity, which is in good accordance with the requirements of worldwide sustainable development strategy nowadays. With the urgent needs of smart identification and simultaneous detection of multiple antibiotics co-existing in the aquatic system in mind, we intentionally synthesized the aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) functionalized bimetallic lanthanide infinite coordination polymers (TPE-TS@Tb/Eu-AMP ICPs) series. The intrinsic physical and chemical properties of target antibiotics (flumequine, four kinds of tetracyclines, and sulfadiazine) triggered the complex chemical recognition reactions of TPE-TS@Tb/Eu-AMP ICPs series to give birth to multivariate cross-responses. Based on these theoretical-oriented sensing elements and rationally selected smart statistical tools, the "lab-on-TPETS@Tb/Eu-AMP ICPs" antibiotic sensor array is established with superior analytical performance. Moreover, the unique optical dominance of TPE-TS@Tb/Eu-AMP ICPs series on solid substrate enabled the subsequent exploitation of test paper tongue (TPT) with simultaneously altered RGB values as elements. Being further coded by the excitation modulation on commercial dark box UV-lamp, even promoted analytical behaviors of the TPT can be realized for the first time. With the aid of the smartphone, robust pattern recognition and accurate systematic analysis of antibiotics in the actual environmental samples were achieved by our sensor array and colorcoded TPT, which may provide important scientific supports and technical reserves for the antibiotic control actions in future.

There is still no good method for the diagnosis of colon cancer, so in this work we have presented a nanoscale metal-organic framework (NMOF)-based sensor array to effectively identify normal and pathological tissues. Moreover, this method can enable a rapid and accurate histopathological examination of colon cancer with simple and easy operation. The method is designed by making use of the different interactions between the overall intracellular proteome signatures of colonic tissues and three structurally stable NMOFs featuring characteristic surface chemistry. We have demonstrated that this sensor array can exhibit excellent performance to detect unknown specimens from low-dose tissue samples with clinically relevant specificity and accuracy. Collectively, the versatile detector array based on NMOFs offers a highly discerning and adaptive alternative for identifying colon cancer tissues, which exhibits wide-ranging prospects in medical diagnosis.

The pyroelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is particularly suitable for sensor arrays because of its low lateral heat flow. sensor arrays can be used to determine the direction and, knowing the distance between detector and heat source, the velocity of a heat source. A novel sensor array combined with machine learning for the effective differentiation of multiple classes of antibiotics based on copper-based nanozymes with laccase-like activity

A nanozyme sensor array was developed combining with machine learning algorithms for the effective identification and differentiation of multiple antibiotic classes and antibiotic individuals. The four channel sensor array was composed by four copper-based nanozymes with laccase-like activity. The significant structural differences between different classes of antibiotics (such as Aminoglycosides, Tetracyclines, β-lactams, Nitroimidazole, Sulfonamides, Quinolones) resulted in the different effect on the nanozymatic reactions through interact with copper、substrate and so on. In addition, the differences between antibiotics in the same class also made certain effect on the nanozymatic reactions. Based on the above affect and differences, we combined the machine learning algorithms to successfully realize the identification of six major classes and sixteen individuals of antibiotics simultaneously for the first time. The proposed sensing strategy realized the facile identification of major categories of antibiotics, which has good application prospects in the rapid antibiotic identification in environmental water bodies.

Sensitive discrimination of hazardous explosives by a sensor array based on siloles with aggregate-induced emission

The utilization of cationic amidinourea as side chain of fluorophore has rarely been reported, which might be an efficient and feasible strategy for detecting hazardous explosives. In this work, we present an organic sensor bearing a cationic amidinourea group—specifically, silole UMPS- synthesized via a rapid and convenient method. Its analogues with novel and symmetric structures were also reported. One is neutral and the other two carry hydrocarbon side chains that are positively charged. All four derivatives exhibit aggregation-induced emission and were employed for the detection of nitroaromatic explosives in water. These silole-based derivatives demonstrate excellent sensitivity and effective discriminatory capabilities in detecting explosives. We constructed a cross-reactive sensor array consisting of four derivatives, enabling the differentiation of nine closely related nitro explosives through linear discriminant analysis (LDA). This sensor array not only effectively distinguishes individual explosives of different concentrations and complex explosive mixtures, but also has the capability to identify individual explosives in real water samples with the assistance of machine learning algorithms. Moreover, two siloles were fabricated into test strips for sensing nitroaromatics in practical applications. We anticipate that the current work will pave the way for the development of cation sensors and provide a convenient detection platform for environmental analysis.

Multi-objective optimization of sensor array using genetic algorithm

A multi-objective optimization method using genetic algorithm was proposed for sensor array optimization. Based on information theory, selectivity and diversity were used as the criteria for constructing two objective functions. A statistic measurement of resolving power, general resolution factor, and visual inspection were used to evaluate the optimization results with the aid of principal component analysis. In each Pareto set, most nondominated solutions had better statistics than the combination using all potential sensors. Also the principal component plots showed that different vapor classes were generally better separated after optimization. The experiment results indicated that the proposed method could successfully identify a set of Pareto optimal solutions of small size;and most optimized sensor arrays provided input with improved quality, i.e. better separation of target analytes. The running time for implementing the multi-objective optimization was satisfactory. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Monitoring the adulteration of milk with melamine: a visualised sensor array approach

Melamine, a toxic triazine, is illegally used as an additive in milk to apparently increase the amount of protein, causing acute renal failure in thousands of Chinese infants. In this study, a rapid, simple, sensitive and selective colourimetric sensor array is reported as a potential screening tool for monitoring the adulteration of raw milk with melamine. Using chemically responsive dyes (mainly porphyrins and pH indicators) as the recognition elements, determination of melamine at different concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0mgkg(-1)) and a detection limit of 0.1mgkg(-1) were achieved because of diverse and strong molecular interactions. Furthermore, the colourimetric sensor array was successfully able to discriminate between melamine and its analogues. The unique fingerprint of melamine was obtained with a novel signal processing method named two-step subtraction, which made it possible for the detection results to be easily observed with the naked eye even without any statistical analysis. In addition, the process including sample pre-treatment and detection process took only 12min at room temperature. The merits (such as simplicity, rapidity, low cost, visual colourimetry, sensitivity and selectivity) make the proposed method especially useful for on-site screening of melamine levels in milk.

Combined Use of FSR sensor array and SVM Classifier for Finger Motion Recognition Based on Pressure Distribution Map

For controlling dexterous prosthetic hand with a high number of active Degrees of Freedom （DOF）, it is necessary to reliably extract control volitions of finger motions from the human body. In this study, a large variety of finger motions are discriminated based on the diversities of the pressure distribution produced by the mechanical actions of muscles on the forearm. The pressure distribution patterns corresponding to the motions were measured by sensor array which is composed of 32 Force Sensitive Resistor （FSR） sensors. In order to map the pressure patterns with different finger motions, a multiclass classifier was designed based on the Support Vector Machine （SVM） algorithm. The multi-subject experiments show that it is possible to identify as many as seventeen different finger motions, including individual finger motions and multi-finger grasping motions, with the accuracy above 99% in the in-session validation. Further, the cross-session validation demonstrates that the performance of the proposed method is robust for use if the FSR array is not reset. The results suggest that the proposed method has great application prospects for the control of multi-DOF dexterous hand prosthesis.
