An approach to distance sensor data integration that obtains in a robust interpretation of the robot environment is presented in this paper. This approach consists in obtaining patterns of fuzzy distance zones from sensor readings;comparing these patterns in order to detect non-working sensors;and integrating the patterns obtained by each kind of sensor in order to obtain a final pattern that detects obstacles of any sort. A dissimilarity measure between fuzzy sets has been defined and applied to this approach. Moreover, an algorithm to classify orientation reference systems (built by corners detected in the robot world) as open or closed, is also presented. The final pattern of fuzzy distances, resulting from the integration process, is used to extract the important reference systems when a glass wall is included in the robot environment. Finally, our approach has been tested in an ActivMedia Pioneer 2 dx mobile robot using the Player/Stage as the control interface and promising results have been obtained.

In this project, mobile connectivity and an innovative approach to sensor data gathering and integration have been employed to automate maintenance inspection, performance monitoring and ride quality measurement in vertical transportation systems. An Inertial Navigation System (INS) has been proposed, implemented and tested to track lift car movement profile. The inherent characteristics of vertical motion have been used to minimize errors and obtain higher accuracy in the integration results. The measurement of a correlation between kinematic profiles constructed from lift-car tracking data compared to its nominal values provides key information on the lift condition at any time. A frequency analysis was applied to processing vibrations and noise data, effectively adding another dimension to the lift ride quality measurement. This approach enabled lift performance profiles to be compiled automatically and transmitted in real time, which significantly rationalized and improved the process of maintenance inspection and monitoring. An advanced prototype, AdInspect, has been produced, with the full set of described features. Industry partners are currently evaluating it.

The parallel sensor data integration local processing in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) is one of the possible solutions to reduce the neighbor sensor node's communication and to save energy. At the same time, the process of local sensor node integration needs an additional processor and energy resources. Therefore the development of a realistic and reliable model of data integration processes in WSNs is critical in many aspects. The proposed GN based method and the related modeling process covers most of the aspects of the parallel sensor data integration in the WSN's, based on 802.15.4 protocols. For simulation and analysis tool is used the WSNet simulator and some additional software libraries. The article presents a new method for modeling and simulation of sensor data integration parallel processing in WSNs. The proposed method uses modeling based on the Generalized Nets (GN) approach which is a new and an advanced way of parallel data processing analysis of Wireless sensor Systems (WSS).

Genetic Algorithm-Based Model Updating in a Real-Time Digital Twin for Steel Bridge Monitoring

The integration of digital twin technology with structural health monitoring (SHM) is revolutionizing the assessment and maintenance of critical infrastructure, particularly bridges. Digital twins-virtual, data-driven replicas of physical structures-enable real-time monitoring by continuously synchronizing sensor data with computational models. This study presents the development of a real-time digital twin for a three-span steel railway bridge, utilizing a high-fidelity finite element (FE) model built using OpenSeesPy v 3.5 and instrumented with 18 strategically placed accelerometers. The dynamic properties of the bridge are extracted using Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI), enabling an accurate estimation of modal parameters. To enhance the fidelity of the digital twin, a genetic algorithm-based model-updating strategy is implemented, optimizing the steel elastic modulus to minimize discrepancies between measured and simulated frequencies and mode shapes. The results demonstrate a remarkable reduction in frequency errors (below 5%) and a significant improvement in modal shape correlation (MAC > 0.93 post-calibration), confirming the model's ability to reflect the bridge's true condition. This work underscores the potential of digital twins in predictive maintenance, early damage detection, and life-cycle management of bridge infrastructure, offering a scalable framework for real-time SHM in complex structural systems.

Diabetes management datasets are often compiled from various sensors and devices, including diabetes technology, activity trackers, and other health-related equipment, resulting in heterogeneous data formats. Despite the abundance of available data, inconsistencies in dataset formats and data-sharing practices limit the ability to build on prior work and compare results across studies. Standardizing data-sharing formats can improve consistency, facilitate dataset consolidation, and reduce the data processing burden for researchers. This article explores the current state of data-sharing practices in diabetes management research and proposes guidelines for harmonizing datasets using a unified time-aligned tabular format. We demonstrate the application of these guidelines on three widely used datasets and highlight key challenges in achieving data harmonization. We call on the broader research community to develop and adopt detailed recommendations for standardized data-sharing practices. (c) 2025 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc. Intelligent multisensor surveillance systems consist of several types of sensors, which are installed on fixed and mobile devices. These components provide a huge quantity of information that has to be contrasted, correlated and integrated in order to recognize and react on special situations. These systems work in highly dynamic environments, with severe security and robustness requirements. All these characteristics imply the need for distributed solutions. In these solutions, scattered components can decide and act with some degree of autonomy (for instance, if they become isolated), or cooperate and coordinate for a complete tracking of special situations. In order to cope with these requirements and to better structure the solution, we have decided to design surveillance system control as a multiagent system. This is done by applying an agent-orientated methodology, which is assessed with concrete scenarios. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a generic approach to integrate environmental sensor data efficiently, allowing the detection of relevant situations and events in near real-time through continuous querying. data variety is addressed with the use of the Semantic sensor Network ontology for observation data modelling, and semantic annotations for environmental phenomena. data velocity is handled by distributing sensor data messaging and serving observations as RDF graphs on query demand. The stream processing engine presented in the paper, morph-streams++, provides adapters for different data formats and distributed processing of streams in a cluster. An evaluation of different configurations for parallelization and semantic annotation parameters proves that the described approach reduces the average latency of message processing in some cases.

Qualitative distances and qualitative image descriptions for representing indoor scenes in robotics

Patterns of qualitative concepts are extracted from robot sensors in order to describe the shapes, colours, spatial orientations and topology situations of natural landmarks in the robot environment and also the distance to them. Those qualitative patterns are obtained at a low level sensor data processing and without using training on datasets or learning techniques. A qualitative distance integration approach is parametrized and applied to detect glass windows and mirrors. Corners and columns are detected by the laser sensor and described qualitatively as relevant landmarks. Images taken by the robot camera are described qualitatively for completing the description of the objects located in the robot environment. Experimentation carried out shows that the integration of the information provided enhances the robot perception. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This thesis is focused on reducing the gap between the acquisition of low-level information by robot sensors and the need of obtaining high-level information for enhancing human-machine communication and for applying logical reasoning processes. To this end, approaches for qualitative and semantic image description and qualitative distance sensor interpretation were developed. Experimentation was carried out on different robotic platforms showing useful applications.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs), Internet of things (IoT) and aerial mapping are nowadays being used very much in agriculture. The challenge of joining those technologies requires a new and smart wireless network topology for devices communication. Problems like scalability and manageability are important challenges when there are many devices. This paper presents the design of a smart IoT communication system manager used as a low cost irrigation controller. The proposal is a powerful irrigation tool that uses real time data such as the variable rate irrigation and some parameters taken from the field. The field parameters, the index vegetation (estimated using aerial images) and the irrigation events, such as flow level, pressure level or wind speed, are periodically sampled. data is processed in a smart cloud service based on the Drools Guvnor (a Business Rules Manager). The developed multimedia platform can be controlled remotely by a mobile phone. Finally, we measured the bandwidth consumed when the system is sending different kinds of commands and data.
