The aim of this work is to demonstrate that thermal modulation improves the selectivity of TiO2 - based resistive-type gas sensors. The sensors operate upon sinusoidal temperature profile over a temperature range of 240 - 300 degrees C. Sensor array is composed of nanocrystalline TiO2:Cr (0.1 - 10 at.% Cr). The switching from n-type to p-type conductivity occurs at about 1 at. % Cr. Electrical resistance responses to reducing and oxidizing gases such as: NO, NO2, H-2, CH4, C3H8 (0 - 3000 ppm) are dynamically recorded and compared in order to assess cross-sensitivity as well as humidity interference. The results of the Principle Component Analysis, PCA demonstrate that reliable detection and classification of H-2, and NOx have been achieved.

Localization of Continuous Acoustic Source in Composite Structures Based on the Beamforming Method With Dispersion Wave-Velocity Correction

The detection of continuous acoustic sources on composite structures is an important research direction in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). However, the complexity of continuous acoustic signals and the anisotropy of composite materials lead to the difficulty of location. Therefore, a method of continuous acoustic source location for composite structure based on the dispersion wave-velocity modified beamforming method is proposed. In this method, an L-shaped sensor array is used to locate the continuous acoustic source with the beamforming algorithm, and the wave velocity-direction curve is constructed by selecting the filter frequency band with the optimal weight and combining the dispersion curves of composite plates in different directions. The noise excitation signal and gas leakage are designed to simulate continuous signals in experiments. The results show that the positioning errors of the two signals are 42.3 and 35.6 mm on a $1000\times 1000\times 3$ mm carbon fiber board. This method can effectively overcome the positioning difficulties caused by anisotropy and provide an important idea for the health detection of composite structures.

This work describes an efficient technique to separate electromagnetic sources, which present very small frequency difference (ΔF = 0.41%). The proposed technique needs fewer sensors than sources to collect the data. The case of sensors array with elements distant λ_0/4 is presented, but can be extended to λ_0/2. It is applied the independent component analysis (ICA) method. An ICA algorithm based on the maximization of nongaussianity and symmetric orthogonalization (FastICA) is used. The appropriate measuring system is mounted to demonstrate the procedure used for data acquisition. Three different antennas were used as independent sources. An array of two planar dipole antenna connected to a radio frequency analyzer was used as sensors in the measuring system. Experimental results show that it is possible the identification of several sources with fewer sensors.

A Novel Passive Magnetic Localization Wearable System for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

Magnetic localization provides a feasible way to estimate the position and orientation of the wireless capsule endoscopy embedded with a permanent magnet. However, the magnetic localization suffers from the drifting effect from magnetic noises and the uncertain initial guess during the optimization. In this paper, a localization system with noise cancellation is proposed to reduce the drifting effect of the geomagnetic noise and obtain the initial guess in a simple and effective way. Compared to the prior arts, the proposed system is able to achieve a lower positioning and orientation error under the same system configuration and makes it possible for the patient to move around while wearing the localization system. Besides, the proposed algorithm improves the consistency of positioning error within the localization region. Within a volume of 380 mm by 270 mm by 240 mm covered by 16 digital magnetic sensors, the average positioning error obtained from the proposed algorithm is around 10 mm and the average orientation error is around 12 degrees.

Exploratory data analysis for industrial safety application

We tested the detection properties of four MOX sensors toward different ozone mixtures to identify sets of sensing layers and interfering compounds concentrations most suitable for a reliable detection of ozone. The measurement campaign lasted I year divided in four sessions. We collected a substantial amount of measurements (more than 500) with diverse interfering gases: ammonia, ethanol, ethylene, carbon monoxide and humidity. Due to the dimension of the data set it could not be analyzed using the conventional methods generally applied for characterizing gas sensors: evaluating the sensor performance by visual inspection of the sensors responses is unfeasible. For this reason we systematically applied the exploratory data analysis methodology. We used some simple but effective statistical techniques to insight the data. This approach allows us to draw sound conclusions about the causes of variation in the data, e.g. time (sensors' long-term stability) or interfering effects of different chemical compounds. All the analysis techniques employed in this work are implemented in a software package developed at our laboratory. We concluded that the two best stable and sensitive sensors are based on WO3 and SnO2 (An catalyzed). We ranked the contributions of different gases on sensor responses, deducing that out sensors are suitable to detect steps of 50 ppb of ozone when ethylene is less than 10 ppm. Carbon monoxide does not affect the measurements still, the strongest interfering compound is humidity that needs to be controlled or parallely measured also in a preliminary stage. Saharan dust electrification perceived by a triangle of atmospheric electricity stations in Southern Portugal

Atmospheric Electric Potential Gradient (PG) measurements were carried out in three sites forming a triangular array in Southern Portugal. The campaign was performed during the summer, characterized by Saharan dust outbreaks;16th-17th July 2014 dust event is considered. Short time-scale oscillations of the PG at two of the stations and a mid time-scale suppression of the PG in the three stations are found. Results are interpreted as evidencing long-range dust electrification;attributed to the air-Earth electrical current creating a bipolar charge distribution inside of the dust layer. The relevance of using arrays of sensors, instead of single sited, is highlighted. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An Optimal Design for Passive Magnetic Localization System Based on SNR Evaluation

Passive magnetic localization is a feasible method to perform a small-scale localization for robotics and biomedical devices, for instance, wireless capsule endoscopy. Suffering from the magnetic noises such as geomagnetic noise and magnetic disturbance in the environment, the localization accuracy of the passive magnetic localization is drastically influenced without a careful system design. In this article, the signal-noise ratio (SNR) of each sensor measurement is defined and applied in the design of both the localization algorithm and the measurement system. Simulations are conducted to verify the relationship between the measurement SNR and the accuracy of the distance estimation. In addition, strategies on the selection of the target magnet, effective SNR threshold of the localization algorithm, and the optimal sensors' distribution are proposed based on the SNR evaluation results. Extended experimental results show that by setting the SNR threshold at 6 dB and adopting the optimal sensors' distribution, the root-mean-square localization error is improved from 0.0529 to 0.0364 mm and the orientation error is improved from 17.3 degrees to 13.7 degrees compared to the uniform sensors' distribution. The proposed algorithm can be used for accurate localization and tracking for untethered devices or biomedical devices, e.g., wireless capsule endoscopy.

A real-time electromechanical impedance-based active monitoring for composite patch bonded repair structure

With the increase of serving time, the metallic primary structures are extremely likely to risk structural failures due to aging and external loads. Composite patch bonded repair offers an effective technique for recovering the ultimate load-bearing capability of the structure. Disbond between the composite patch and the substrate is a typical failure mode that severely reduces the structural stiffness and strength of repair region. In this paper, a combining active monitoring scheme is proposed based on electromechanical impedance (EMI) and coupling constitutive equations. Two statistical damage indices (DIs), root mean square deviation (RMSD) and mean absolute percentage deviation (MAPD), are adopted for locating the disbond and evaluating its severity based on extracted signatures. Experiments on the repair structure with a 3 x 3 sensors array are performed to monitor the disbond between repair patch and substrate. The experimental results show that both disbond locations and seventies on the bondline can be monitored efficaciously with the proposed active monitoring scheme.

Compact and Embedded Electronic Nose for Volatile and Non-Volatile Odor Classification for Robot Applications

Electronic noses are studied and developed since many years, aiming today to enhance the sensitivity floor, the response time, or characterize new chemical processes. Nowadays, the most performant apparatus are cumbersome, expensive, and not fully dedicated to mobile systems. Most of the researches related to embedded noses on moving applications aim to develop mapping or source detection of toxic gases, enhancing the geometry of the nose and taking into account the air flow perturbations. In this study, we aimed to develop a compact electronic nose dedicated to identify volatile and nonvolatile odors. The aim is at midterm to embed it on a humanoid robot. The purpose is to achieve a compact and embedded electronic nose to provide an added function for robots evolving in their daily environment and able to learn more odors. The final goal is mainly to use it in human-like behavior, mostly to sense food with several conditioning possibilities like volatile or nonvolatile odors. The developed E-Nose has four MOS gas sensors, embedded electronics, and software based on k-nearest neighbors' classification algorithm. Experimental results show success rates up to 98% to differentiate between four fruits juices, namely apple, orange, pineapple, and grenade and to identify rotten eggs from good eggs, grenade perfume, and butane gas, in less than 60 s. An extensible interface enables the E-Nose to learn more odors.

Simultaneous Measurement of Force and Temperature by a Multi-Position Fiber Loop Ringdown Sensor array

A multi-sensor addressing method for fiber Bragg grating aided fiber loop ringdown (FBG-FLRD) sensor array is proposed. It is capable of simultaneous measurement of temperature and force. Light from a wavelength-swept fiber laser (WSFL) is modulated into pulsed light to illuminate FBG-FLRD sensor array. Based on the time sequence of pulsed lights reflected by fiber Bragg grating array, each FBG-FLRD sensor can be distinguished. The time interval between the trigger signal of the WSFL and the pulsed light reflected by FBG offers temperature variation information. By measuring the ringdown time of each FBG-FLRD, the loss of fiber ring induced by temperature and force can be obtained. And then simultaneous measurement can be implemented in real time. To prove the validity of the proposed system, a six elements array is experimentally validated with interrogation frequency of 27.5 Hz.
