This work presents a colorimetric dye-based array for naked-eye detection of chicken meat spoilage. The array is obtained by fixing five acid-base indicators, m-cresol purple (1), o-cresol red (2), bromothymol blue (3), thymol blue (4), and chlorophenol red (5), and a sensing molecule specific for thiols, 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrodibenzoic acid), called Ellman's reagent (6), on a cellulose-based support. The dyes, being permanently charged, are fixed on the support via ion-exchange. The entire degradation process of beast poultry meat, at ambient temperature and in a domestic fridge, is followed by the change of the color of the array, placed in the headspace over the meat samples. The device is set after selection of the most suitable starting form, which could be the acidic or the basic color of indicators, being the proper dye concentration and the dimension of the spots already established. Basing on sensors colors, we identified three levels of the degradation process of chicken meat, named SAFE, WARNING, and HAZARD. By instrumental analysis, we demonstrated that sensors response was correlated to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) composition in the headspace and, thus, to meat spoilage progress. We demonstrated that biogenic amines (BAs), commonly considered a critical spoilage marker, are indeed produced into the samples but never present in the headspace, even in traces, during the investigated time-lapse. The VOC evolution nevertheless allows one to assign the sample as WARNING and further HAZARD. Some indicators turned out to be more informative than others, and the best candidates for a future industrial application resulted in a bromothymol blue (3)-, chlorophenol red (5)-, and Ellman's reagent (6)-based array.

NTCDA organic thin-film-transistor as humidity sensor: weaknesses and strengths

1,4,5,8-Naphthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA) organic thin-him-transistors employed as humidity sensors exhibit higher performance level compared to NTCDA chemiresitors. In particular, the transistor on-current exhibits higher values and a larger dynamic range as well as a better reversibility, compared to the response of an NTCDA resistor. On the basis of the FT-IR spectra of NTCDA humid and anhydrous thin-films, a model for the NTCDA/H2O system is proposed which eventually explains the variation of NTCDA thin-film-transistor parameters, while the device is exposed to changing water vapor atmosphere. Compact and low power ADCs for a MEMS-based probe storage device

In this paper, we investigate the most appropriate ADC for an array of probe storage devices. Power consumption and area are crucial in this application, since one ADC is associated with each read channel. The read-channel specifications of the probe storage device require an ADC with seven bits of resolution at a rate of 100 kSample/s. Five different ADC architectures have been implemented for the desired specifications: a first- and a second order discrete-time a second order continuous-time and a cyclic ADC. The system and circuit design methods of each architecture are presented. The different architectures are compared based on the measurement results of the five fabricated circuits.

Development of a normalized multi-sensors system for low cost on-line atmospheric pollution detection

Air Pollution monitoring and measurement are generally done using sampling techniques and analysis equipment often heavy, complex and expensive. Although these methods offer a high measurement precision which is essential to answer standards requirements, they are not adapted for quality oriented applications where simple information with low precision can be sufficient. The use of semiconductor gas sensors networks can provide the answer for a "low cost" system intended for such applications in air pollution detection fields. Three identical portable autonomous sensors arrays were built, each containing nine commercial semiconductor sensors especially chosen to detect a large range of pollutants usually encountered in ambient air and for a large part of them regulated. In order to overcome the temporal instability and the lack of reproducibility of these sensors, a calibration and normalisation procedure was developed. The obtained systems were used for on-site pollution monitoring in association with the French National Network of Accredited Associations for Air Quality Monitoring (AASQA). Gathered data from sensors systems and network data (NO, NO2, CO, PM2,5,..) were treated using nonlinear regression algorithms like Neural Networks with an original "fuzzy logic" type pre-treatment in order to compute a model able to predict the membership degree for three predefined pollution categories: traffic, urban and photochemical pollution, along with a pollution index describing the severity of the predominant pollution. The prediction rate was estimated system per system, and site per site for six sites. It has been shown that it was possible to obtain a quasi-universal model with a success rate over 80%. Epidermal RFID-Based Thermal Monitoring Sheet (R-TMS) for Microwave Hyperthermia

Hyperthermia is an anti-cancer treatment that exploits the interaction between high-power electromagnetic fields and restricted regions of human tissues releasing a great amount of power to locally increase tissues temperature. Due to the high power, dangerous hot-spots may occur on the skin so that continuous monitoring of superficial temperature distribution is required. Thermal Monitoring Sheets (TMSs), which are grids of several wired temperature sensors, are currently used in clinical practice;however, they have some limitations in terms of poor spatial resolution, thermal conduction errors, and complex application procedures. Epidermal electronics associated with passive Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) sensing technology could represent an attractive alternative thanks to its wireless nature and limited invasiveness. In this framework, this article proposes an innovative TMS based on battery-less RFID sensors (R-TMS). It comprises a planar grid of circular loop antennas with temperature-sensing-oriented ICs that can sample skin temperature without interfering with hyperthermia treatment. The system proved capable of monitoring skin temperature via wireless data transmission with a higher spatial resolution that state-of-the-art devices. The physical rationale, the design, and the experimentation of the R-TMS are here presented to validate the proposed approach and evaluate its feasibility from the electromagnetic perspective.

Wine varietal discrimination and classification using a voltammetric sensor array based on modified screen-printed electrodes in conjunction with chemometric analysis

This work reports the application a sensor array based on modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) in conjunction with chemometrics for wine discrimination and classification according to the varietal origin of the grapes. Three SPCEs modified with e nanomaterials such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and polypyrrole (Ppy) doped with 1-decanesulfonic acid sodium salt (DSA) were used. Voltammetric signals obtained with individual sensors and jointed to form a sensor array were used as inputs to develop the qualitative and quantitative models employing principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Generally, satisfactory results were obtained, with discrimination capabilities of 86.72% for SWCNT/SPCE, 92.31% for MWCNT/SPCE and 78.17% for Ppy/DSA/SPCE for the investigated white wine varieties. The proposed sensors array based on modified SPCEs can be used for wine discrimination with a reasonable accuracy (72.00%). The LDA discriminant model based on sensors array was able to classify the Sauvignon Blanc (100.00%), Columna (91.67%) and Riesling Italian (80.00%) wines with high degree of accuracy.

In this paper, we propose a new approach of consensus- based Cubature Kalman filtering problem for a inertial sensor networks with gyroscopes and accelerometers saturations. The communication path is represented by a connected indirect graph between nodes and sensors. Saturation phenomenon exists both in the state and in the measurement. A comparison between CKF and UKF based consensus on Information is carried out. The Consensus approach is developed to estimate the true state of the target following a state equation with saturation function. Finally, the superiority of the CKF based consensus versus the previously proposed consensus-based unscented Kalman filtering is demonstrated through multiple simulations scenarios. © 2018

Multi-parameter gas sensors based on organic thin-film-transistors

In this communication, evidence is provided that an organic thin-film-transistor (OTFT) can be used as a novel gas sensor. When exposed to chemical species at room temperature, four parameters can be measured: the bulk conductivity of the organic thin film, the field-induced conductivity, the transistor threshold voltage and the field effect mobility. Measurements of these parameters may allow for recognition of molecular species. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A magnetic sensor array for spot welding quality monitor

Spot welding is affected by many factors and is difficult to monitor the nugget information with single sensor. In this paper, a new monitor system based on sensors array technique was developed for spot welding quality detection. The key part in the system is cross magnetic sensor array. It is composed of six magnetic sensors. An improved algorithm was proposed to extract the signal eigenvalue, which was based on principle component analysis. The results show that in the case of the 60 mm experiment, cross magnetic sensor array works well. And when the eigenvalues range of the cross magnetic sensor array is 0. 090 1 - 0. 098 2, the spots quality is good. The analysis of the eigenvalues of the cross magnetic sensor array allows us to determine whether the spot qualty is good or bad.

Application of a semiconductor sol-gel sensor array to the discrimination of pollutants in air

Pure and Pd, Pt and Os activated tin oxide thin films have been prepared by the sol-gel process. The physical properties have been investigated by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to obtain information on chemical, structural and morphological composition of the layers. In particular microstructure and morphology has been shown to be dependent on the presence of the doping element. Integrated gas micro-sensors were obtained that showed the different sensing characteristics depending also on doping elements. PCA analysis was performed on an array consisting of the prepared sensors and the results have shown the capability to discriminate different air pollutants. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
