In this paper, we propose a new approach of consensus-based Cubature Kalman filtering problem for a inertial sensor networks with gyroscopes and accelerometers saturations. The communication path is represented by a connected indirect graph between nodes and sensors. Saturation phenomenon exists both in the state and in the measurement. A comparison between CKF and UKF based consensus on Information is carried out. The Consensus approach is developed to estimate the true state of the target following a state equation with saturation function. Finally, the superiority of the CKF based consensus versus the previously proposed consensus-based unscented Kalman filtering is demonstrated through multiple simulations scenarios. We describe an ultra-low-power volatile compounds microsensor array towards increased selectivity and sensitivity. The chemiresistive transducers are 100 nm-thick interdigitated gold microelectrodes coated with polypyrrole-based polymer. Two sensors arrays were implemented with respectively 3 x 3 and 2 x 2 pixels(2), showing a surface per pixel down to 400 x 200 mu m(2). The fabrication is fully CMOS-compatible and the polymer coating is performed at wafer level by electropolymerization, using a differential pulse method from 1.1 to 1.5 V. The polymer, film thickness varies from 1.2 to 1.5 mu m. Looking at ammonia detection, a sensitivity up to 80 % at 5 ppm in nitrogen is achieved, while consuming below 20 mu W continuously. Finally, temperature and humidity effects are analyzed at 25 and 45 degrees C, from 45 to 95 % RH. Such devices are very promising for remote environmental monitoring applications requiring low-cost low-power sensors associated with dedicated electronics.

Pure and Pd, Pt and Os activated tin oxide thin films have been prepared by the sol-gel process. The physical properties have been investigated by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to obtain information on chemical, structural and morphological composition of the layers. In particular microstructure and morphology has been shown to be dependent on the presence of the doping element. Integrated gas micro-sensors were obtained that showed the different sensing characteristics depending also on doping elements. PCA analysis was performed on an array consisting of the prepared sensors and the results have shown the capability to discriminate different air pollutants. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The authors developed fuzzy logic procedure for the exact estimation of ozone concentration in air with variable humidity. The used sensor array consisted of thin film ozone sensor fabricated by the authors and commercial Keithley humidity sensor. Two-input fuzzy sensor model was elaborated using the known calibration data and developing the learning procedure based on genetic algorithms. The performance of the model was tested.

Eddy current testing (ECT) is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method in many industrial applications, which has been developed and advanced significantly in the past few decades. However, there are still challenges to overcome, such as the need for scanning and imaging large surfaces, improving the defect detection and classification capability. In this work, these have been addressed using tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor array and a swept-frequency chirp excitation signal, together with the pulse-compression algorithm. Conventionally, time domain analysis is used in pulsed eddy current to gather info about any defects. Here the time domain analysis is implemented on the output of the pulse-compression procedure applied to the sweptfrequency chirp response, which is also processed via frequency domain analysis. The results showed larger SNR values for time domain images and a better clustering of the SNR values compared to the frequency domain, facilitating the defect depth estimation and classification.

This paper considers the application of signal processing methods to passive indoor positioning with acoustics microphones. The key aspect of this problem is time-delay estimation (TDE) that is used to get the time difference of arrival of the source's signal between the pair of distributed microphones. This paper studies the approach based on generalized phase spectrum (GPS) TDE methods. These methods use frequency-domain information about the received signals that make them different from widely applied generalized cross-correlation (GCC) methods. Despite the more challenging implementation, GPS TDE methods can be less demanding on computational resources and memory than conventional GCC ones. We propose an algorithmic implementation of a GPS estimator and study the various frequency weighting options in applications to TDE in a small room acoustic environment. The study shows that the GPS method is a reliable option for small acoustically dead rooms and could be effectively applied in presence of moderate in-band noises. However, GPS estimators are far less efficient in less acoustically dead environments, where other TDE options should be considered. The distinguishing feature of the proposed solution is the ability to get the time delay using a limited number of the adjusted bins. The solution could be useful for passively locating moving emitters of narrow-band continual noises using computationally simple frequency detection algorithms.

We demonstrate the development and practical use of low-cost printed strain sensor arrays built for applications in structural health monitoring. sensors embedded in the array were designed to provide compensation for temperature variations and to enable their use in different seasons. The evaluation was carried out in laboratory tests and with practical application on a highway bridge. Measurements on the bridge were performed 7 months and 1 year after their installation. The developed devices were fully operational and could detect and localize cracks accurately in the monitored bridge structure.

Development of Portable E-Nose System for Fast Diagnosis of Whitefly Infestation in Tomato Plant in Greenhouse

An electronic nose (E-nose) system equipped with a gas sensor array and real-time control panel was developed for a fast diagnosis of whitefly infestation in tomato plants. Profile changes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from tomato plants under different treatments (i.e., whitefly infestation, mechanical damage, and no treatment) were successfully determined by the developed E-nose system. A rapid sensor response with high sensitivity towards whitefly-infested tomato plants was observed in the E-nose system. Results of principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) indicated that the E-nose system was able to provide accurate distinguishment between whitefly-infested plants and healthy plants, with the first three principal components (PCs) accounting for 87.4% of the classification. To reveal the mechanism of whitefly infestation in tomato plants, VOC profiles of whitefly-infested plants and mechanically damaged plants were investigated by using the E-nose system and GC-MS. VOCs of 2-nonanol, oxime-, methoxy-phenyl, and n-hexadecanoic acid were only detected in whitefly-infested plants, while compounds of dodecane and 4,6-dimethyl were only found in mechanically damaged plant samples. Those unique VOC profiles of different tomato plant groups could be considered as bio-markers for diagnosing different damages. Moreover, the E-nose system was demonstrated to have the capability to differentiate whitefly-infested plants and mechanically damaged plants. The relationship between sensor performance and VOC profiles confirmed that the developed E-nose system could be used as a fast and smart device to detect whitefly infestation in greenhouse cultivation.

Towards Enhanced Eddy Current Testing array Probes Scalability for Powder Bed Fusion Layer-Wise Imaging

This work presents a new eddy current testing array probe and readout electronics that target the layer-wise quality control in powder bed fusion metal additive manufacturing. The proposed design approach brings important benefits to the sensors' number scalability, exploring alternative sensor elements and minimalist signal generation and demodulation. Small-sized, commercially available surface-mounted technology coils were evaluated as an alternative to usually employed magneto-resistive sensors, demonstrating low cost, design flexibility, and easy integration with the readout electronics. Strategies to minimize the readout electronics were proposed, considering the specific characteristics of the sensors' signals. An adjustable single phase coherent demodulation scheme is proposed as an alternative to traditional in-phase and quadrature demodulation provided that the signals under measurement showed minimal phase variations. A simplified amplification and demodulation frontend using discrete components was employed together with offset removal, vector amplification, and digitalization implemented within the microcontrollers' advanced mixed signal peripherals. An array probe with 16 sensor coils and a 5 mm pitch was materialized together with non-multiplexed digital readout electronics, allowing for a sensor frequency of up to 1.5 MHz and digitalization with 12 bits resolution, as well as a 10 kHz sampling rate.

Metal-oxide gas sensors have great potential for emerging applications, including breath analysis due to their small form factor, low cost, and low power, which enables integration in consumer electronics, such as smartphone accessories, wearables, and, in the future, smartwatches and phones. Acetone concentration in breath is an important biomarker for well-being and biomedical applications, such as weight loss and ketoacidosis monitoring. In this article, we present a monolithically integrated array of gas sensors combined with a flow sensor in order to provide better quantification of acetone. In particular, this work demonstrates improvement in the acetone selectivity thanks to the combination of three different metal oxides and the ability to compensate with the flow variation.
