An edge-preserving subband image coding scheme based on separate coding of region and residue sources

This paper presents a novel image coding scheme based on separate coding of region and residue sources. In a subband image coding scheme, quantization errors in each subimage spread over the reconstructed image and result in a blurring or a boundary artifact. To obtain high compression ratio without considerable degradation, an input image, in our scheme, is separated into region and residue sources which are coded using different coding schemes. The region source is coded by adaptive arithmetic coder. The residue source is coded using multiresolution subimages generated by applying a subband filter. Each block in the subimages is predicted by an affine transformation of blocks in lower resolution subimages. Experimental results show that a high coding efficiency is achieved using the proposed scheme, especially in terms of the subjective visual quality and PSNR at low bit-rate compression.

In this paper, we consider the problem of separate coding for two correlated memoryless Gaussian sources. We determine the rate-distortion region in the special case when one source provides partial side information to the other source. We also show that the previously obtained inner region of the rate-distortion region is partially tight. A rigorous proof of the direct coding theorem is also given.

Universal coding for the Slepian-Wolf data compression system is considered. We shall demonstrate based on a simple observation that the error exponent given by Csiszar and Korner for the universal coding system can strictly be sharpened in general for a region of relatively higher rates. This kind of observation can be carried over also to the case of lower rates outside the Slepian-Wolf region, which establishes the strong converse along with the optimal exponent.

Multiterminal source coding achievable rates and reliability

Some open problems concerning classical multiterminal configuration in which two correlated sources {X} and {Y} are encoded separately and decoded by common decoder with respect to a fidelity criterion for messages of both sources are resolved. The results of Berger and Yeung are expanded in two directions, First, we determine the ''rare-distortion'' region R(Delta) of achievable rates R(x), R(y) for a given Delta = (Delta(x), Delta(y)) with Delta(x) the permissible distortion level for reproduction of X and Delta(y) - for Y, Thus we give a full solution of the problem noted by Kaspi and Berger (they constructed the inner bound for R(Delta)), and solved by Berger and Yeung for the ease of ''one distortion''), Second, we introduce the notion of ''rate-reliability, distortion'' region for multiterminal source encoding problem;more precisely, the region of admissible rates of codes ensuring exponential decrease with a given exponent E > 0 of the probability of exceeding the distortion levels Delta(x) or Delta(y). The inner and outer bounds for this region R(E, Delta) are constructed, The analytical representation obtained for R(Delta) proved to be somewhat simpler than that considered by Kaspi and Berger and by Berger and Yeung, Ours uses only variables pertaining to the problem statement with no auxiliary ones.

Iterative decoding of convolutional codes applied to separate coded PPM

separate coding can achieve better characteristics than Reed-Solomon code in a binary vanishing channel when combined with convolutional code. separate coding has the advantage that decoding is easy, since partial codes are decoded independently. In past decoding methods, however, decoded information other than the partial encoder under consideration is not utilized. When separate coding is applied to a PPM channel, the output of the partial encoder in question is completely correlated with the outputs of the other encoders. Thus, it should be possible to improve the error rate of the whole system by effectively utilizing the decoded information from other decoders. The purpose of this paper is to utilize the correlation between the outputs of the partial encoder in separate coding, and to propose an iterative decoding method based on the decoded information of multiple partial encoders. The improvement in the error rate, the comparative decoding complexity, and the external information to be used in iterative decoding are investigated. Computer simulations show that characteristics close to those of maximum likelihood decoding up to approximately 0.5 dB are achieved by the proposed decoding method while limiting the increase in decoding complexity due to the increase in the number of encoders.
