Hybrid algorithm for dynamic economic dispatch with valve-point effects

Dynamic economic dispatch problem in power system considering valve-point effects of generators is a non-smooth, non-convex and multi-dimensional constrained optimisation problem. In allusion to those characteristics, this study proposes a hybrid algorithm which integrates low-discrepancy sequences, improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm and sequential quadratic programming. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by using case studies based on 5-unit, 10-unit and 30-unit test systems over a period of 24 h. The results show that the proposed method has improved solution quality and computation efficiency, compared with most current approaches.

Robust Calculation of Frequency-Dependent Transmission-Line Transformation Matrices Using the Levenberg-Marquardt Method

This paper presents a new method for the calculation of smooth frequency-dependent transmission-line (TL) transformation matrices. The proposed method, based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, solves an equivalent real-valued approach of the generalized complex eigenproblem. The implemented formulation incorporates a robust convergence criterion and is applicable to all TL configurations, due to the included numerically well-defined computational scheme. Smooth modal transformation matrices are calculated for overhead and underground TL configurations under different representations of the imperfect earth. Results are compared and validated with the corresponding results obtained from the Newton-Raphson and the sequential quadratic programming methods, revealing the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of the proposed formulation, even in cases where the other methods fail.

A PWR core power control using optimized PID controller with SQP based on control rod positioning and variable coolant flow rate

To ensure safety and stability, it is optimal for nuclear power plants to operate at their nominal power level. However, to meet the needs of power systems, NPPs must also be able to adjust their output for load-following purposes. This necessitates finding an effective control algorithm to maintain stable/safe operating conditions. The current study investigates the performance of PID controllers optimized using sequential quadratic programming algorithm and applied using two control techniques: control rod positioning and variable coolant flow rate. Simulation is done using model of four-loop Westinghouse PWR-1200 MW nuclear reactor. The proposed controller's performance is evaluated in three scenarios: sudden control rod withdrawal, sudden change in coolant inlet temperature, and linear load tracking. The influences of model parametric uncertainty are also investigated. Simulation results revealed that the performance of the control algorithm applied using variable coolant flow rate was superior to the one using control rod positioning.

This work presents strategies for fractional order model reference adaptive control (FOMRAC) and fractional order proportional-integral-derivative control (FOPID) applied to an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The paper focuses on tuning the gains and orders of the FOPID controller and the gains and orders adaptive laws of the FOMRAC controller, with the goal of minimizing non-linear and high dimensionality objective functions, using sequential quadratic programming (SQP), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and genetic algorithms (GA). Two models used for AVR have been studied and reported in the literature and are the bases of the three case studies reported in this paper. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed MRAC, comparisons are made with the previous results, i.e. with the results obtained by a PID controller and an MRAC controller optimized by GA. We demonstrate through some performance criteria that fractional order controllers optimized by the PSO algorithm improve the behavior of the controlled system, specifically the robustness with respect to model uncertainties, and improvements with respect to the speed convergence of the signals.

Multicriteria design optimization of a supersonic inlet based upon global missile performance

The flight performance of a ramjet-powered missile is improved through the use of an automated optimization loop relying on computational-fluid-dynamics tools. A generic supersonic airbreathing missile is first described, and its performance is assessed for a representative mission using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computations for aerodynamics prediction and theoretical engine performance models. The loop links together an optimization algorithm with an aerodynamic software computing the aerodynamic balance of the missile. Several optimizations are performed using different global algorithms such as simplex, evolutionary strategies, or genetic algorithms. The first ones are mono-objective: for each point of the mission (acceleration, cruise, and maneuver), the best inlet shape has to be found. Then multiobjective optimizations are performed in order to find the pareto front, that is, the best set of shapes satisfying the whole mission.

Geometric-Dynamic Trajectory: A Quaternion Pythagorean Hodograph Curves Approach

Trajectory generation remains one of the primary challenges in achieving true autonomy, especially in relation to universal applicability needed for coordination as well as scalability of both the environment and number of obstacles. Geometric-dynamic approaches offer a universal solution to trajectory generation that is both intuitive and computationally efficient. In this paper, an extension of Bezier spline-based techniques is presented that exploits the quaternion structure of a Pythagorean hodograph curve to include the orientation of the vehicle in a four-dimensional trajectory specification. The trajectory is constructed to achieve G2 continuity and paired with a timing law that ensures C2 continuity. Various kinodynamic evaluation parameters are derived and presented for use in trajectory optimization, and the technique is demonstrated on a high-fidelity nonlinear model of an F16 jet. The segmented nature of this approach allows for the efficient scaling of the algorithm to large environments with long and complex trajectories, which combined with efficient spatial separation computations allow for environments with multiple obstacles or trajectories. The focus of this paper is on the method used to represent the trajectory rather than the optimization algorithm that finally exploits this structure to generate the optimal trajectory.

Signal censoring and fusing with system-level communication constraints in multistatic radar: a J-divergence and Bhattacharyya distance-based approach

Decentralised detection using censored observations is an effective way to mitigate communication constraints where each sensor only transmits the informative' observations to a fusion centre (FC), and censors those deemed uninformative'. In this study, a censoring rule is used at each spatial diversity channel such that only the observation exceeding a local threshold is transmitted, where the local threshold controls the communication rate. In particular, the authors consider a scenario where there exists a communication constraint at the FC. To design a proper communication bandwidth allocation (CBA) algorithm, two Ali-Silvey distance measures, i.e. the J-divergence (JD) and Bhattacharyya distance (BD), are utilised as objective functions to achieve a manageable optimisation procedure for designing local thresholds. The CBA algorithm is proposed by solving a constrained non-linear programming problem through the sequential quadratic programming method. Besides, the detection performance is analysed under the censoring scheme, given the optimised local thresholds. Numerical results indicate that the two Ali-Silvey distance-based algorithms can outperform the uniform bandwidth allocation strategy;meanwhile, the BD-based method performs better at high signal-to-noise scenarios but slightly worse at low, compared with the JD-based method.

Hierarchical collision-free trajectory planning for autonomous vehicles based on improved artificial potential field method

To enable autonomous vehicles to generate smooth and collision-free trajectories and improve their driving performance on structured roads, this paper proposes a hierarchical trajectory planning algorithm based on an improved artificial potential field method. To improve the applicability of the algorithm to complex scenarios, the Frenet coordinate system was established to address these limitations. First, the safety distance model is applied to the risk assessment of the improved artificial potential field method. Then, the hierarchical solution is carried out, and the road solvable convex space and the rough path solution are solved by combining the artificial potential field method. On this basis, the potential field term and the smoothing term cost function are established, and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm is used to solve the exact path that meets the requirements of safety and smoothness. Hierarchical planning shortens the solution time by quickly determining the bounds of the convex space. Finally, in the speed planning, in order to take into account the comfort and safety of the occupants, the speed curve is solved by considering the dynamic constraints of the vehicle. The obstacle avoidance effects of the algorithm on static and dynamic obstacles are tested in different simulation scenarios. The results of the simulation experiment show that the proposed algorithm can successfully achieve obstacle avoidance on complex structured roads.

A method of sequential log-convex programming for engineering design

A method of sequential Log-Convex programming (SLCP) is constructed that exploits the log-convex structure present in many engineering design problems. The mathematical structure of Geometric programming (GP) is combined with the ability of sequential quadratic Program (SQP) to accommodate a wide range of objective and constraint functions, resulting in a practical algorithm that can be adopted with little to no modification of existing design practices. Three test problems are considered to demonstrate the SLCP algorithm, comparing it with SQP and the modified Logspace sequential quadratic programming (LSQP). In these cases, SLCP shows up to a 77% reduction in number of iterations compared to SQP, and an 11% reduction compared to LSQP. The airfoil analysis code XFOIL is integrated into one of the case studies to show how SLCP can be used to evolve the fidelity of design problems that have initially been modeled as GP compatible. Finally, a methodology for design based on GP and SLCP is briefly discussed.

Optimal design of extractive distillation for acetic acid dehydration with N-methyl acetamide

A distinctive strategy for entrainer recycling is proposed in this work for acetic acid (AA) dehydration by extractive distillation by using N methyl acetamide (NMA). The use of standard entrainers such as DMF or DMSO has the main drawback of forming an azeotrope with acetic acid. However, the vapour liquid equilibrium AA NMA exhibits a tangential pinch point at NMA end composition. The new strategy rises from the thermodynamic analysis of the ternary diagram that which involves no azeotrope. As a result, acetic acid with high purity can be obtained by the recycling of the entrainer with a relaxed constraint in its purity. Optimization studies are discussed by using two approaches: two-step optimization method with sequential quadratic programming (TSOM case) and the multi-objective genetic algorithm. The multi-objective genetic algorithm allowed the computation of the optimal acetic acid dehydration with an impurity of 3% in the recycled entrainer. Significant cost savings are achieved thanks to the optimization of both columns together. Energy consumption is reduced by 12.8% and 56.9% whereas TAC is saved by 28.4% and 56.3% compared with optimal case TSOM (impurity content 1%) and a published "Case Ref" (impurity content 0.01%), respectively.
