Changing the electrical load is a non-stationary random process. It is proposed to process the observation data using principal component analysis. To predict the power consumption the method of support vector machine was selected in which the parameters of the regression model are determined on the basis of the solution of a sequential quadratic programming problem. Optimization of parameters of nuclear function is executed on the basis of particle swarm. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A framework for the design of natural-laminar-flow airfoils is developed based on multipoint aerodynamic shape optimization capable of efficiently incorporating and exploiting laminar-turbulent transition. A two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solver making use of the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is extended to incorporate an iterative laminar-turbulent transition prediction methodology. The natural transition locations due to Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities are predicted using a simplified e(N) method or the compressible form of the Arnal-Habiballah-Delcourt criterion. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver is subsequently used in a gradient-based sequential quadratic programming shape optimization framework. The transition criteria are tightly coupled into the objective and gradient evaluations. The gradients are obtained using an augmented discrete-adjoint formulation for nonlocal transition criteria. Robust design over a range of cruise flight conditions is demonstrated through multipoint optimization. Finally, a technique is proposed and demonstrated to enable the design of natural-laminar-flow airfoils with robust performance over a range of critical N factors: the optimizer is seen to produce transition ramps similar to those used by experienced designers.

In power converters, common challenge for current reference tracking employing model predictive control (MPC) is the high computational burden. This issue is more obvious when solving optimal control problems over prediction horizons. To manage and enhance the computational efficiency of widely used control strategies, an integrated perturbation analysis and sequential quadratic programming (IPA-SQP) solver is used to achieve the system constrained optimization and lower sampling times, hence reducing the computational complexity. A Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for current control in cascaded H-bridge Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C) is also developed. The M3C is connected to a low frequency AC system, which has an operating frequency less than 20 Hz. The proposed control scheme is therefore introducing an alternative for practical implementation. Simulation results for a closed-loop system with low frequency output side for a 9-level M3C is included to validate the main findings.

This paper investigates a Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for the precise control of (un) balanced load currents in Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). The control objectives are circulating currents minimization inside the converter arms, achieve a capacitors voltage balance and load current control. To achieve the converter constrained optimization and facilitate the implementation on embedded systems, an integrated perturbation analysis and sequential quadratic programming (IPA-SQP) solver is also utilized. As a case study the proposed approach is applied to a grid-connected five-level MMC. The introduced FCS-MPC formulation reduces sensitivity of the converter output voltage to disturbances in grid side and measurement noise with reducing the computational burden. Simulation results reveal the effectiveness of the developed control scheme in cases when operational objectives, e.g., load current reference tracking and disturbance rejection are considered under system model uncertainties.

In this work, shape optimization is carried out of a single link flexible revolute flexible manipulator to extremize two objective functions (static tip deflection and fundamental frequency) using sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. Robotic link is considered as an Euler-Bernoulli beam and finite element formulation is done. Newmark's scheme is used for its dynamic analysis. A comparative study of vibration suppression is carried out of uniform and shape optimized revolute robotic link under the excitation of sinusoidal/controlled torque. (C) 2016 The Authors. In this dissertation, we develop an R package, NlcOptim, to solve the optimization problems with nonlinear objective functions and nonlinear constraints. This pack- age can be used to solve problems in sufficient dimension reduction and variable selection because of its capability to accept the input parameters as a constrained matrix. We propose a framework for dimension reduction problems via Distance Co- variance (DCOV) where both the response and the predictor are vectors. In this framework, distance covariance method is employed to estimate the central subspace effectively, and we also propose two different methods based on projective resampling technique to transfer multivariate response to univariate response. This approach keeps the model-free advantage, and can fully recover the central subspace even when many predictors are discrete. We then extend DCOV methods to canonical analy- sis, termed as Canonical Distance Covariance Analysis (CDCA), where we explore the relationships between two multivariate sets of variables. In addition, we extend DCOV to estimate the dual central subspace (DCS), which is to find the basis that span the subspace of Y Y Y as well as the basis that span the subspace of X X X. At last, we develop a new concept, termed the Dual Variable Selection (DVS), to propose a method for simultaneously selecting subsets for each of the two random vectors, by employing DCOV method combined with LASSO penalty.

The solution methodology for solving a general multi-target Lambert rendezvous optimization problem is proposed in this paper. The purpose of optimization is to find the optimal visiting sequence and trajectory that minimize the velocity increment to complete all rendezvous maneuvers. The problem is mathematically formalized by applying a hybrid optimal control framework. A novel approach using a gradient-based algorithm to find a set of local minima for single-target Lambert rendezvous is developed. Then, a scheme that sequentially combines the sets of local minima to obtain the global solution of multi-target Lambert rendezvous for a given sequence is introduced. Experimental studies are conducted to demonstrate the validity of the proposed methods. The results show that the proposed scheme is successfully worked as an inner-loop solver and ensures the consistent optimal solution. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Due to the climate change and the decrease in fossil fuel reserves, the industrial and tertiary sectors have been focused on the implementation of advanced energy management systems in order to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their overall emissions. One way to achieve that goal, which is also the focus of this work, is by optimizing the energy use in their operation processes. This paper presents a hybrid optimization method, combined by neuro-fuzzy inference systems and the quadratic programming optimization method, to calculate the short-term demand forecasting of a multi-carrier energy system and to optimize its energy flow. The objective of the optimization is to fulfill the system's energy demands and minimize a set of established optimization criteria. Moreover, the algorithm considers the system's dynamics and inertias in order to guarantee that the obtained results present a feasible and stable operation strategy for the energetic plant. The method has been applied and validated under real conditions in a car manufacturing plant of Spain, in the framework of a FP7 European research project using online production and consumption data. © 2016 IEEE.

Non-Newtonian Fluids in Action: Revisiting Hydraulic Conductivity and Pore Size Distribution of Porous Media

Classic porous media flow experiments focus on water as the fluid of choice, thus limiting estimates of saturated hydraulic conductivity to a single averaged value that is rarely informative of the complexity of the pore structure. A theoretical framework is presented for a new method for experimentally estimating a functional pore structure of porous media using a combination of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The proposed method builds an analog geometry of parallel capillary tubes (with tortuosity) that has the same functional behavior of real porous media in terms of saturated flow and porosity. The equivalent pore structure is formed by transforming results from N saturated infiltration experiments, comprised of water and N - 1 non-Newtonian solutions, into a system of equations that yields N representative pore radii (R-i) (size distribution of tubes) and their corresponding number (derived from percent contribution to water flow, w(i)). This feature further allows estimating the soil water retention curve using only saturated experiments. We further show the ability of the proposed theoretical framework to infer additional information about flow in the porous medium as compared to what can be inferred from N (or even more) Newtonian fluids. This example shows the potential of this method and the ability of the proposed framework to extract additional information that an equal or larger number of experiments with only Newtonian fluids cannot extract.
