Reliability-Based Design Optimization for the Structures with Fuzzy Variables and Uncertain-but-Bounded Variables

A study was conducted to demonstrate direct reliability-based design optimization (DRBDO) for the structures with fuzzy variables and uncertain-but-bounded variables. An approach called target performance-based approach (TPBA) was developed to address the problems associated with DRBDO. The proposed TPBA was obtained by a numbered of equations that were motivated by the performance measure approach (PMA) for probabilistic RBDO and the concerned performance-based approach (CPA) for nonprobabilistic RBDO. The similarities were that they were based on the equivalence between reliability index constraints and target performance constraints. TPBA was applied to the situation with fuzzy variables and uncertain-but-bounded variables, whereas PMA and CPA were applied to random variables and nonprobabilistic framework.

A novel 3D model retrieval approach using combined shape distribution

With the rapid development of 3D digital shape information, content-based 3D model retrieval has become an important research field. 3D models are likely to be as prevalent as other multimedia data types in the future. There is a pressing need for effective content-based 3D model retrieval methods. In this paper, a novel combined shape distribution (CSD) descriptor is proposed for 3D model retrieval based on principal plane analysis and group integration. Firstly, based on principal plane analysis, the second principal plane is obtained by using sequential quadratic programming. Secondly, two novel 3D shape descriptors are proposed by introducing the plane normal vectors to other shape distributions. Thirdly, since the histogram of the proposed descriptors can be classified as belonging to one of three types: positive, negative, or crossed with each principal plane, further improvements to the descriptors are presented by integrating these three types of histograms. Finally, a CSD descriptor based on the synthesis of the above descriptors is proposed. Several retrieval performance measures and visual experimental results show that the new methods achieved good retrieval performance.

Application of Different Algorithms to Optimal Design of Canal Sections

Today the increased world population and therefore the growth demand has forced the researchers to investigate better water canal networks distributing much more water while at least keeping its quality. Canal design formulas are explicitly obtained for different cross-sections considering minimum area but optimal design of canal sections considering seepage and evaporation losses are still an open area to study. In this study, two different algorithms are applied to this problem and results are compared with the one in literature. Genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming technique are used in optimization. Triangular, rectangular and trapezoidal cross-sections are optimized. It is seen that both algorithms are giving more accurate results than in literature.

An Optimization Applied to Design of SC Biquad-Based Circuits

This paper presents a novel optimization technique for the design of multi-stage switched capacitor (SC) biquad-based circuits, using multi-objective constraint programming. Optimization methods, namely single objective and multi-objective in the design areas of SC circuits that are adopted in optimal capacitance assignment are briefly introduced. A sample design (4th order SC biquad-based circuit) with multiple objectives is given for demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed optimization method, which can meet multiple targets (for example, more than two optimal goals- gain of op-amp and size of total capacitance area), showing 6% reduction of total capacitance area, while maintaining the same frequency responses. Also, this paper demonstrates an overview of optimization techniques for the design of different SC biquad-based circuits, using constraint programming. In particular, the progresses achieved on adopting optimization approaches in Operational Amplifiers (OA) are briefly reviewed and then compared.

A feasible SQP-GS algorithm for nonconvex, nonsmooth constrained optimization

The gradient sampling (GS) algorithm for minimizing a nonconvex, nonsmooth function was proposed by Burke et al. (SIAM J Optim 15:751-779, 2005), whose most interesting feature is the use of randomly sampled gradients instead of subgradients. In this paper, combining the GS technique with the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method, we present a feasible SQP-GS algorithm that extends the GS algorithm to nonconvex, nonsmooth constrained optimization. The proposed algorithm generates a sequence of feasible iterates, and guarantees that the objective function is monotonically decreasing. Global convergence is proved in the sense that, with probability one, every cluster point of the iterative sequence is stationary for the improvement function. Finally, some preliminary numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is effective.

In this paper, a Constrained Dynamic Differential Evolution (CDDE) algorithm is proposed to solve constrained optimization problems. In CDDE, the crossover rate CR and scale factor F are dynamically changed and selected randomly from the range [0.5,1]. This way, CDDE has degrees of exploration abilities for the landscape of the constrained optimization problems and can be able to discover the search space and reach the feasible regions. Also, a novel hybrid simple constraint handling technique is suggested, which combines two well-known techniques: feasible rules and adaptive penalty function. Near convergence, CDDE uses the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method to enhance its local search ability. CDDE performance has been tested on the constrained benchmark functions of the CEC 2010 competition. The results demonstrate that CDDE outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms and consistently reaches feasible solutions.

Conventional guidance algorithms for exo-atmospheric missile interception, such as Proportional Navigation, provide guidance laws that are derived from conceptual heuristics where certain simplifications have to be made. Typically, these guidance laws have the disadvantage of not being able to fully take into account system and/or vehicle limitations such as maximum thrust. In this paper, optimal control and numerical optimization methods are used to provide a guidance scheme that may incorporate these critical constraints, while still ensuring a successful hit-to-kill interception of the target. Therein, a direct optimal control approach is deployed, based on multiple shooting and a sequential quadratic programming algorithm for solving the resulting nonlinear optimization problem. Numerical results for three distinctive transcription methods for deriving the nonlinear program are presented that illustrate the overall efficiency of numerical optimization as a guidance scheme.

The development of smart grid and distributed energy resources makes it possible for the large number of distributed gas turbines and photovoltaics in cities to interact with the utility grid and provide ancillary services via different demand response programs. By implementing the two-part real-time pricing mechanism to encourage microgrid participation in demand response, this paper presents the optimization model of microgrid with multi-energy resources in price-based demand response program with the aim of net income maximization. The algorithm of sequential quadratic programming is applied to solve the problem. The effects of real-time pricing, state of charge and unit ratio on demand response are further discussed in detail. The simulation results indicate that the microgrid integrating photovoltaics with gas turbines demonstrates significant elasticity and flexibility in providing ancillary services through demand response.

Cylinder-crown integrated hydraulic press is an innovative press. The hemispherical hydraulic cylinder also functions as a main portion of crown. Compared with the conventional hydraulic press in which cylinder mounted in the crown, the thickness of hemispherical hydraulic cylinder could be much thinner and the crown section modulus could be much higher under the same application condition. As a result, the material strength capacity is better utilized. Based on sequential quadratic programming, structural optimization of hemispherical hydraulic cylinder for weight reduction has been carried out within the range of constraints including strength and stiffness conditions. Compared with the initial design, a lighter structure with weight reduction 7% and acceptable stress distribution has been obtained. Considering the advantages of cylinder-crown integrated hydraulic press, according to its optimization design, a 6300KN prototype hydraulic press has been manufactured. (C) 2014 The Authors. This paper concentrates on optimization of the steady-state cruise for a hypersonic vehicle. The steady-state cruise is a state with constant altitude and velocity during the flight. The ratio of fuel consumption to the range over a given period of time is defined as the fuel rate, which is the objective of this fuel optimized problem in this work. The optimal steady-state cruise is determined by minimizing the fuel rate with multi-constraints including boundary constraints of states and path constraints. Since this work needs to find the global solution satisfying the nonlinear constraints, we can apply particle swarm optimization(PSO) combined with the sequential quadratic programming(SQP) to find the optimal solution. Thus, this strategy takes the advantage of intelligent optimization algorithms with global search ability and SQP with high precision and handled constraint ability. A demonstration example results show good performance of fuel savings on the nonlinear model of the hypersonic vehicle.
