In the paper, the problem of modelling and designing of reconfigurable and reusable distributed automation systems is addressed. Such systems are characterized by the distribution of hardware, software, and physical components for the control and automation systems implementation, following the trend to distributed intelligence into the controlled plant and to integrate Information and Communication Technologies into automation systems. Through the help of a case study, the paper investigates advantages and disadvantages of monolithic and distributed design approaches and models, and some available tools and standards are critically compared. A proposal is given of new modelling paradigms able to capture the overall system description, drawn from the on-going European Project TORERO.

The paper presents a design methodology for reconfigurable, modular digital controller synthesis. It starts with behavioral specifications and goes through Register Transfer Level to rule-based logic expressions, rewritten in hardware description languages. The logic controller program can be initially specified as Petri net, IIEC1131 sequential function chart or UML state machine diagram. All considered graphical specifications are described in the one, unified, textual, rule-based format. After hierarchical encoding of concurrent states and super states, the diagrams can be directly mapped into the array of cells in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).

In the paper, the problem of the modeling and design of a control system for transporting systems in batch processes is addressed. In particular, it is shown that with a careful modeling of transporting systems as aggregate resources and with a suitable hierarchical control architecture, the problem complexity can be strongly reduced with respect to known approaches. In addition, the implementation phase can be easily carried out as well. Supervisory control theory is here adopted as a design technique, and exploited to the extent to which it is convenient in the perspective of the design and implementation of industrial automation systems. Though the ideas here discussed are quite general, they have been exemplified with a batch process drawn from the literature.

The present study has as main goal to present a differentiated form of programming for a prototype of a robot of five degrees of freedom with pneumatic drive. This program is based on the language SFC (sequential function chart) standardized by IEC 61131-3. The main feature of this type of language is simplicity in integration with various elements present in the manufacturing environment, ensuring the sequencing of actions and ease of programming. The system used as a test bench consists of a pneumatic robot which currently control actions are carried out through specific programming routines combined with dedicated control boards, working with Matlab software. The study was conducted in three stages: the first, for creating subroutines in SFC language to linear movement, pick and place movement and palletizing movement, thus, by setting some input data it is possible to reprogram the robot for tasks in a graphical and intuitive way; the second stage of the study consisted in creating a translator program in Matlab language based on scripts that, through an OPC server (Ole for Process Control), interpreters the program in SFC language and translates it into the language of the control system robot; the last step was intended for testing this programming approach by using a PLC Compact Logix from Allen-Bradley in conjunction with RSLogix 5000 programming software, Matlab and the control system of the pneumatic robot. It was concluded that the implementation and use of this type of programming for robot handling tasks are both feasible. The 1 000 ton's extruder is a piece of main equipment to produce graphite electrode. It is a bigger system, its working procedure is very complicated, and it is difficult to be controlled by conventional control method, thus the PLC has been used to control the extruder and both automatic and manual control have been implemented. There are 38 inputs, 33 outputs and two analog signals in the system. PLC in FX2 series of MITSUBISH was adopted : basic unit FX2 - 48MR, extend unit FX2 - 48ER, and analog module FX - 4AD. Because of process complexity and speciality, a mixture method of ladder chart and state transfer chart has been explored to program. This method makes the program programmable, adjustable and readable.

This paper briefly states the features and advantages of FCS (fieldbus control system). In view of condensate water fined processing system of domestic 600 MW supercritical coal-fired generating units, it designed and developed a FCS for entirely process control, designed computer monitoring software and organized network monitor the change of data. At the same time, making the simulation device of the system, the FCS control system scheme is implemented on this device. It is verified by practice that the system control technology is advanced, safe, reliable and operation well. It provides a complete project for automation technology upgrade program in power plant. This paper describes a real time algorithm to be implemented by SFC (sequential function charts) on a PLC based distributed control system to avoid plant damages or system failure during plant operation due to interactions between human operator and plant, that is to avoid incorrect human decision and/or human actions. This paper presents complexity metrics that can be used to compare different logic controller designs in the format of sequential function charts for the same automation task and to assess the quality characteristics of the designs like usability and maintainability. The proposed method helps to improve the quality of logic controller designs, and thereby can reduce life-cycle cost. The method is illustrated by a application example.

The design methodology of modular Logic Controllers, which are realised in reconfigurable array logic, is presented. sequential function chart is considered as an initial behavioural specification of Concurrent State Machine with Data Path. SFC is supplemented with textual explanation of its guards and actions, written in Structured Text. Before a final design, it is transformed into a particular kind of modular control interpreted Petri net and described in VHDL on Register Transfer Level. The dedicated Data Path is formed from previously designed function Blocks. Refined, structured and verified description of Reconfigurable Logic Controller is mapped directly into FPGA by means of using dedicated and commercial synthesis tools.
