To ensure deterministic computations, nodes of Kahn process networks must implement sequential functions with blocking read methods. However, while the Kahn criteria are sufficient to ensure determinism, they are not necessary to ensure determinism. While it is difficult to define precise properties of nodes to ensure determinism of dataflow process networks, there are known classes of functions, such as endochronous and stable functions, that are more general than sequential functions and still ensure determinism. Endochronous functions are also of practical interest for desynchronizing systems, which is possible when a synchronous system does not react to the absence of values, so it does not need its clock and is instead triggered only by the arrival of data values. Basic nodes for defining the set of sequential functions are known. However, since the set of endochronous functions is larger than the set of sequential functions, the question arises which additional basic nodes are needed in dataflow process networks to define the endochronous functions. This paper discusses conditions that must hold for such a set of basic endochronous nodes, and presents examples of endochronous functions that must be represented in any case. In particular, we thereby focus on boolean endochronous functions so that we can reason about a finite set of functions that can be characterized by disjoint prime implicants.

Mahler's original result states that a function from N to Z is uniformly continuous for the p-adic metric dp if and only if it can be uniformly approximated by polynomial functions. The tumor microenvironment (TME), which includes acidic and hypoxic conditions, severely impedes the therapeutic efficacy of antitumor agents. Herein, MnO2-loaded, bovine serum albumin, and PEG co-modified mesoporous CaSiO3 nanoparticles (CaM-PB NPs) are developed as a nanoplatform with sequential theranostic functions for the engineering of TME. The MnO2 NPs generate O-2 in situ by reacting with endogenous H2O2, relieving the hypoxic state of the TME that further modulates the cancer cell cycle status to S phase, which improves the potency of co-loaded S phase-sensitive chemotherapeutic drugs. After the hypoxia relief, CaM-PB can sustainably release drugs due to the enlarged pores of mesoporous CaSiO3 in the acidic TME, preventing the drug pre-leakage into the blood circulation and insufficient drug accumulation at tumor sites. Moreover, the Mn2+ released from the MnO2 NPs at tumor sites can potentially serve as a diagnostic agent, enabling the identification of tumor regions by T-1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging during therapy. In vivo pharmacodynamics results demonstrate that these synergetic effects caused by CaM-PB NPs significantly contribute to the inhibition of tumor progression. Therefore, the CaM-PB NPs with sequential theranostic functions are a promising system for effective cancer therapy.

In this paper we consider the problem of sequentialisation of rational functions f : Sigma* -> M. We introduce a class of monoids that includes infinitary groups, free monoids, tropical monoids and is closed under Cartesian Product. For this class of monoids we provide a sequentialisation construction for transducers and appropriately generalise the notion of Twinning Property. We provide a construction to test the Twinning Property for transducers over the considered class of monoids and prove that it is a necessary and sufficient condition for the sequentialisation construction to terminate.

This article seeks to demonstrate that well and but function as a special sort of discourse marker (DM) in oral narratives, and that their functions within the oral narrative context follow neither from their usual meanings nor from their usual DM functions in other contexts. Instead, both well and but are keyed on participant expectations about narrative structures and storytelling procedures. Excerpts from conversational narratives will illustrate how well and but initiate and conclude narrative action, how they guide listeners back to the main sequence of narrative elements following interruptions and digressions, and how listeners can invoke well and but to re-orient the primary teller to the expected order of narrative presentation. If, as Eraser (1990) says, discourse markers signal a sequential discourse relationship, then specifically narrative DMs provide particularly clear evidence of an independent DM function not related to any lexical meaning. The analysis of well and but in oral narrative shows that DMs enjoy specialized functions in this particular type of discourse due to its highly coded sequentiality and storytelling conventions. We report the case of a 4 years and 2 months old girl, whose development was normal before she suffered from severe viral cerebellitis. When she recovered from the acute phase, a complete loss of speech was evident, although language comprehension was not impaired. Mutism disappeared after about two weeks, giving way to the aphonic utterance of a few words. After three months, her speech was slow and monotonous, without phonetic disturbances. She could only produce very simple and incomplete sentences in both spontaneous and constrained situations and she was able to mantain discourse sequentiality only under continuous guidance. No deficit in single-word recognition or naming was detected. Her sentence reproduction was good, while verbal fluency was very poor when no cue was given, but was normal with category cues. Her intelligence was within the normal range, but activities requiring programming, particularly those involving sequencing, were very defective. The patient's impairment is attributed to the failure of the cerebellar-frontal loops to activate strategies involved in processing and programming verbal and sequential functions.
