With the increasement of gas-fired generators, the coupling of power system and natural gas network has been strengthened. To guarantee the security and efficiency of energy supply, a joint day-ahead market clearing framework for natural gas, electricity energy and reserve is proposed considering linepack. Security-constrained unit commitment is first modelled to determine generator status and gas flow direction which is solved by a second-order cone relaxation. Second, economic dispatch model is presented to decide market clearing results. A special sequential linear programming (SLP) is proposed to solve the nonlinear market clearing problem and automatic price transmission from natural gas to electricity based on Lagrangian multipliers of coupling constraints is proved. Numerical cases are tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model and algorithm and the effect of linepack on dispatching and pricing results is analyzed.

Given a power network consisting of nodes (generators/loads) and edges (lines), there exist a set of constraints that must be satisfied in order for the system to be operational. When one or more power lines are cut, the bus phases and load/generator power values may need to be altered in order to restore the system to operation. The load shedding problem is to find the smallest adjustment to the loads that achieves this restoration. In this work, we show how to solve this nonlinear optimization problem by solving a sequence of linear programs. On random graphs with 1500 edges, we find that our method is at least 40 times faster than competing nonlinear optimization methods. We show that our method is capable of solving load shedding problems for a real graph with 19840 edges, and that the method scales with an O(n(2)) running time where n is the number of edges. For real subgraphs with hundreds of edges, we are able to rapidly solve all possible load shedding problems in which at most two lines are deleted. This work takes a first step towards a scalable load shedding algorithm capable of handling large networks that will arise in the future.

This paper identifies the two most efficient non-linear programming techniques for the solution of optimization problems of plane structural frames under multiple load systems. The problem is one of minimizing the mass of the frame subject to constraints on normal and shear stresses, the maximum transverse deflection and buckling load. In all, five different NLP techniques are tried, and it is found that the sequential linear and sequential convex programming techniques are the most efficient for the solution of the class of NLP problems under consideration. © 1993, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. This paper describes a mathematical formulation for the active/reactive dispatch in electricity markets, including a number of issues present in market models used in several countries. Traditional market approaches are implemented considering a sequence of activities namely in terms of active power dispatch and ancillary services. However, these two problems are coupled in the sense that dispatching reactive power is not independent from the active power scheduling of generators. The proposed model admits that it is known the purely economic pool dispatch together with bilateral contracts and then it aims at dispatching reactive resources considering voltage and branch limit constraints and constraints reflecting the alternator capability curve. As a sub-result, this formulation also outputs nodal active and reactive marginal prices that can be useful to build tariff schemes. Finally, the paper includes a case study based on the IEEE 30 bus/41 branch system to illustrate the obtained results and their interest for electricity markets.

Increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) creates challenges in formulating the security constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) problem as the number of models for these resources proliferate. Specifically, the number of devices with different mathematical models is large and their integration into the SCOPF becomes tedious. Henceforth, a process that seamlessly models and integrates such new devices into the SCOPF problem is needed. We propose an object-oriented modeling approach that leads to the autonomous formation of the SCOPF problem. All device models in the system are cast into a universal syntax. We have also introduced a quadratization method which makes the models consisting of linear and quadratic equations, if nonlinear. We refer to this model as the State and Control Quadratized Device Model (SCQDM). The SCQDM includes a number of equations and a number of inequalities expressing the operating limits of the device. The SCOPF problem is then formed in a seamless manner by operating only on the SCQDM device objects. The SCOPF problem, formed this way, is also quadratic (i.e. consists of linear and quadratic equations), and of the same form and syntax as the SCQDM for an individual device. For this reason, we named it security constrained quadratic optimal power flow (SCQOPF). We solve the SCQOPF problem using a sequential linear programming (SLP) algorithm and compare the results with those obtained from the commercial solver Knitro on the IEEE 57 bus system.

This study deals with uncertainties about the sales mix of the cost management when we must consider uncertain times of each standard operation. At this time, we need to investigate the behaviors of the optimal solution of this problem calculated by linear programming. It is also important to think of the deterministic linear programming of sales mix as the nonlinear programming based on uncertainties like hyperbola curves instead of lines defined by some constraint conditions about the times of several standard operations First, it is pointed out that this sales mix is defined as nonlinear programming model to solve the zipper and lower bounds of maximum sales profit. Second, it is clarified that the simple method like sequential linear programming is useful not to compute by several complex nonlinear programming methods directly. Under these conditions, we consider the characteristics of actual optimal solutions about the times of practical operation to make a decision effectively. From numerical simulations, it is considered that the risk of practical cost management is shown as mathematical model to evaluate its uncertainties. I've can also show some behaviors of optimal solution points by using some charts.

Increasing deployment of combined heat and power plants intensifies interactions between renewable-based electric power systems and district heating systems. Combined heat and power dispatch is thus critical for energy-efficient coordination of integrated electricity and heat systems under high penetration of renewable energy. However, the complicated nature of district heat flows introduces significant nonlinearities and precludes the practical implementation. In this paper, a combined heat and power dispatch method based on a simplified district heat flow model is proposed to enhance the computational efficiency with desirable accuracy for better operational decisions. Several novel modifications are incorporated to reduce the model size and relieve the model nonlinearity through analyzing operational principles of district heating networks. An iterative solution algorithm is developed accordingly based on sequential linear programming to boost computational efficiency and guarantee fast convergence. The proposed method can describe temperature dynamics of district heating systems with respect to transmission delays and heat losses without assumptions on constant mass flow rates or constant supply temperature. Case studies based on a test system validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The requirements for extremely precise and powerful large space antenna reflectors have motivated the development of a procedure for static shape control of the reflector surface. A mathematical optimization procedure has been developed that improves antenna performance while minimizing necessary shape-correction effort. The control procedure is based on regulating electromagnetic (EM) performance in contrast to previous work, which is based on controlling the rms distortion error of the surface, thereby indirectly improving antenna performance. The application of the control procedure to a radiometer design with a tetrahedral truss backup structure demonstrates the potential for significant improvement. The results indicate the benefit of including EM performance calculations in procedures for shape control of large space antenna reflectors. © 1989 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.

To achieve more efficient structures, research into material properties is important in mechanical designs. The anisotropy of fiber composites is increasingly being exploited. This is particularly true for curved and continuous composites. The position and orientation of the filaments have a major influence on mechanical properties. So, the application of these fibers at specific paths is very important to obtain excellent structures. When developing components for high-performance applications, it is necessary to use optimization methods to find the best reinforcement paths. To achieve high efficiency, it is necessary to reduce the volume of the reinforcements to improve the strength-to-weight ratio. This reduction not only directly reduces the mass, but also decreases manufacturing costs. The present work aims to gradually add reinforcements to carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs). It observes the exact number of fibers required to achieve the greatest possible reduction in strain energy. The results prove that the use of more reinforcements than ideal is unnecessary because it increases the volume of reinforcements but doesn't improve the properties. Optimization is achieved by parameterizing B-splines using sequential linear programming (SLP). Four cases analyzed concern a cantilevered plate. A force is applied to the free edge, causing bending. The boundary conditions are identical, and only the length of the plate changes. The strain is plotted to observe the strain distribution. Then, the results show that adding three to four reinforcements can reduce the strain energy by 92.6% to 98.0% compared to a structure without reinforcements.

We introduce a globally convergent sequential linear programming method for nonlinear programming. The algorithm is applied to the solution of classic topology optimization problems, as well as to the design of compliant mechanisms. The numerical results suggest that the new algorithm is faster than the globally convergent version of the method of moving asymptotes, a popular method for mechanical engineering applications proposed by Svanberg.
