Optimal power flow (OPF) has always played an important role in optimizing the operation of power systems, which are complex and highly nonlinear networks. The need for optimization is even more pressing in modern power grids with distributed energy resources (DERs, with or without storage) that introduce more flexibility, dynamics, and uncertainties to power grids. Most importantly, they add the time dimension to the optimization process: DERs generate the need to optimize systems in real time over a time horizon considering forecasts. This article proposes a multi-stage OPF formulation and solution method based on object-oriented device models with a rolling horizon incorporated for real-time optimizations to achieve optimal feedback control. The process also takes into account changing forecasts. The proposed approach is tested on a real distribution feeder and the results indicate that the method is very promising.

Engineering design optimization using interior-point algorithms

The interior-point methods have emerged as highly efficient procedures for solving linear programming problems in recent years. The interior point methods have superior theoretical properties as well as observed computational advantages over simplex methods at solving large linear programming problems and are found to be immune to degeneracy. It is a common observation in literature that most nonlinear programming methods that work well for small and medium sized problems are not able to solve large-scale problems efficiently. It is to be expected that interior-point methods, when used in an adaptive sequential linear programming strategy, might prove to be a powerful engineering optimization tool. The development of an adaptive sequential linear programming algorithm, based on an infeasible primal-dual path-following interior-point algorithm and fuzzy heuristics, is considered in this work for the solution of large-scale engineering design optimization problems. Several numerical examples are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the present method. The examples include a part stamping problem, a turbine rotor design problem, and an optimal control problem related to tidal power generation. The number of design variables and constraints range from 12 to 402 and 20 to 20,300, respectively, for the part stamping problem. The turbine rotor problem involves 905 variables and 1081 constraints, and the optimal control problem has 2002 variables and 1001 constraints. The numerical results clearly demonstrate the superiority of the interior-point methods compared with the well-known simplex-based linear solver in solving large-scale optimum design problems. The superior performance of the present method is shown in terms of both computational time and the ability to handle degenerate problems.

Optimum design of cantilevered columns under the combined action of conservative and nonconservative loads Part I: The undamped case

This paper considers stability optimization of undamped cantilevered columns subjected to the simultaneous action of a conservative ('dead') load and a nonconservative ('follower') load at their free ends. The load combination is characterized by a 'nonconservativeness parameter' eta, where eta = 0 corresponds to a purely conservative load (an Euler column) and eta = 1 to a pure follower load (Beck's column). The optimization problem is considered in the form of volume minimization by constant critical load and is solved numerically by using finite elements and sequential linear optimization. It is shown that the minimum volume design for constant critical load is equivalent to the maximum critical load design for constant volume;for any design and any load combination, critical load/(volume of column)(2) = constant. Optimum designs are determined for eta = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. For the uniform column, stability is lost by divergence for eta < 0.5 and by flutter for eta > 0.5. For the optimal columns, divergence occurs only in the case eta = 0.0;for the other eta-values considered, stability is lost by flutter. The largest benefit of optimization is obtained in the case eta = 0.4;here the critical load for the optimal column is more than ten times larger than for the uniform column. The stability of the optimal columns for other types of loads than the design-load is thoroughly investigated and illustrated by diagrams. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Automated yield-line analysis of beam-slab systems

The rigid-plastic yield-line analysis of isotropically reinforced concrete slabs acting in conjunction with torsionally weak supporting beams is developed as the lower-bound form of a linear programming formulation. The analysis is extended to consider geometric variation of chosen yield-line patterns by the technique of sequential linear programming. A strategy is followed of using a fine potential yield-line mesh to identify possible collapse modes, followed by analysis using a coarser, simplified mesh to refine the investigation and for use in conjunction with geometric optimization of the yield-line system. The method is shown to be effective for the analysis of three slabs of varying complexity. The modes detected by the fine and simplified analyses are not always similar but close agreement in load factors has been consistently obtained.

Several novel ideas in the definition and optimization of robustness for structures and structural controllers are presented. A robustness bound attributable to Patel and Toda is developed using eigenvalue conditioning analysis. Homotopy and sequential linear programming algorithms are used in lieu of conventional nonlinear programming to implement these ideas for an illustrative example. The numerical results confirm the conservatism of the stability robustness bound but nevertheless support the hypothesis that maximizing the robustness measure does significantly increase the true robustness of a closed-loop system. The results also indicate that maximizing the stability robustness measure produces more robust designs than minimizing eigenvalue sensitivity directly.

Composite structures are currently being designed to make use of multiple layers of fiber-reinforced material. The fibers in each layer are aligned straight and parallel with each other. Within a particular layer, the fiber orientation is fixed. This is opposed to having a fiber orientation that varies from point to point within a layer or group of layers. The idea of using fibers in anything other than a straightline format has been hampered by the inability to implement such a design. However, comtemporary fiber handling techniques, such as multiaxis tow placement devices may eliminate this barrier. As such, it is worthwhile to consider the gains, or losses, that accompany the use of curvilinear fiber formats. This paper begins to discuss the notion of a curvilinear fiber format for the specific problem of a plate with a hole. It should be noted that some work has been done in the area of curvilinear reinforcement.

OPTIMUM DESIGN OF MULTIPLE CONFIGURATION STRUCTURES FOR FREQUENCY CONSTRAINTS

During the service of an aerospace structure, its configuration may vary for different operating conditions. When we restrict the word 'configuration' to structural geometry, the structures with multiple configurations that come to mind are, for example, a tilt-rotor aircraft in airplane or helicopter mode and a stowed vs deployed solar array system for a spacecraft. If we generalize the word configuration to encompass boundary conditions and mass distribution, then all aerospace vehicles can be considered to be structures with multiple configurations. In application, design specifications may impose specific natural frequency constraints for different configurations. For a structure with a single configuration, the minimum weight design with frequency constraints can be found readily. However, the resulting optimum design may not satisfy frequency constraints for the structure in other configurations. This often leads to design iterations among various configurations. After many design iterations, the final design may be feasible but not optimum. The purpose of this paper is to develop an approach for minimum weight design of structures with several configurations under natural frequency constraints. In the optimum design problem, frequency constraints for all configurations are considered simultaneously. In each design cycle, the constrained minimum weight design problem is solved iteratively by a combined analysis/optimization procedure. To increase the computational efficiency, the iterative analysis is approximated by using reduced-order modal space models. sequential linear programming (SLP) for optimization procedure is considered. In SLP, the optimum design problem is linearized at each design iteration. Together with a strategy to compute move limits, the resulting linear optimization problem is solved as a linear programming problem. Design potential method for robust system parameter design

A novel design potential method that integrates the probabilistic constraint evaluation closely into the design optimization process Is presented for robust system parameter design. From a broader perspective, it is shown that the probabilistic constraints can be evaluated using either the conventional reliability index approach or the proposed performance measure approach. The performance measure approach is inherently robust and is more effective when the probabilistic constraint is inactive. The reliability index approach is more effective for the violated probabilistic constraint, but it could yield singularity when the probabilistic constraint is inactive. Moreover, the close coupling of performance probability analysis and design optimization is illustrated in a proposed unified system space, The design potential method, which is developed to take full advantage of the important design information obtained from the previous probabilistic constraint evaluation, can significantly accelerate the convergence of the reliability-based design optimization process.

Maximization of the fundamental frequencies of laminated truncated conical shells with respect to fiber orientations

The fundamental frequencies of laminated truncated conical shells with a given material system are maximized with respect to fiber orientations by using a sequential linear programming method with a simple move-limit strategy. The significant influences of shell thickness, shell length, shell radius ratio and cutout on the maximum fundamental frequencies and the associated optimal fiber orientations are demonstrated. Optimization-based inverse simulation of a helicopter slalom maneuver

An inverse simulation methodology based on numerical optimization is presented. The methodology is applied to a simplified version of the slalom maneuver in the ADS-33D helicopter handling qualities specification. The inverse simulation is formulated as an optimization problem with trajectory. and dynamic constraints, pilot inputs as design variables, and an objective function that depends on the specific problem being solved. A maximum speed solution is described. The results show that numerical optimization is a reliable and flexible tool for inverse simulation, both when the required trajectory is prescribed explicitly and when it is defined indirectly through geometric and dynamic constraints. When the trajectory is defined indirectly, there is not a single acceptable trajectory but rather an entire family with noticeable differences in the helicopter dynamics and in the required pilot inputs. Even when the trajectory is prescribed explicitly, multiple solutions exist. For handling qualities studies, the multiple solutions may provide an indication of tbe amount of scatter in pilot ratings to be expected for a given aircraft and a given maneuver. However, if the inverse simulation is used for simulation validation, then additional constraints may have to be placed on the solution to make it unique.
