server-based computing (SBC), i.e., replacing workstations with thin clients, is an effective solution to many IT problems, while free open source software is a cost-efficient alternative to proprietary software. We studied synergies of these two approaches. The results indicated that the open source SBC solution offered at least the same quality of service as the proprietary implementation but lowered the total cost of ownership around 50% compared to previous desktop PC solutions.

The purpose of this study is to define the issues in evaluating the usability of pen-tablet systems (PTS) with server-based computing (SBC) in hospital settings. For five subjects with PTS operation, we measured the delay of drawing under SBC environments and compared it with the results of questionnaires from subjects. It was found that the relation of the usability with the drawing velocity and the delay is the crucial issue for a further study.

Remote display protocol are widely used in server-based computing platforms. Remote display based desktop and application sharing systems enable users to access the whole remote desktop or a single application. Sharing systems encode all screen elements by fixed encoding methods to guarantee generality, without consideration of network environments and display output character of the shared applications. Prior researches figured out that multimedia and video replay could not be supported efficiently by remote display systems. In this paper, we present an adaptive encoding application sharing system, which could switch different encoding algorithm according to application's display character. Video encoding is utilized to encode display-intensive area to solve display performance problem. The experimental results show that for web browsing application, the scheme reserves 9.5%similar to 20.8% network traffics and guarantees low latency;for video replay, frame rate is increased by 4.2 similar to 17.9 times than traditional approach in which video data are encoded and broadcast.

IT usage is key issue in MIS research. However, a variety of models such as Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) have neglected the role of technology structure in studying IT usage. Alternatively, IT appropriation considers how IT is called into use in terms of IT technology structures. However, the practices of IT appropriation have not yet been convincingly demonstrated. This paper explores the issues of IT appropriation. Specifically, we conduct our study in the context of server-based computing (SBC), due to its unique technology structures, where the issues of appropriation process of SBC becomes relevant and important. In this paper, the Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) provides a conceptual framework that helps to capture the appropriation process. Drawing on a Taiwanese case study, three perspectives of SBC appropriation process are examined including the faithfulness of appropriation, the attitudes toward use, and the consensus on appropriation. The case findings suggest that incremental change, identity development and interaction are of critical importance in the SBC appropriation process. Our findings contribute to the literature on IT infrastructure deployment, innovation and cooperative behavior, and the social perspective of information management. The implications and future research directions are also discussed.

This paper describes the logics and experience in piloting a new project-based program overview course to introduce the fundamental computer science concepts, methodologies and technologies underpinning the latest information technologies for students who have just completed CS2 or the equivalent. The course focuses on recurring great computing ideas, motivates computing students with the modern real-world challenges and their innovative solution technologies based on creative application of the great ideas, and shortens the prerequisite chains for subsequent computing courses to support more current and flexible computing curricula. The assessment data indicate that students who have taken this program overview course are better motivated and prepared for follow-up courses and real-world IT challenges.

In server-based computing (SBC), one key step is to send the server screen to the clients timely. To reduce the bandwidth taken by this transfer, many encoding techniques such as Hextile, Zlib, Tight, FCE have been presented. Since they only take the spatial redundancy into account, the reduction of bandwidth is limited and the bottleneck of transfer is still prominent, especially in ubiquitous environments. This paper presents a novel mechanism for remote screen synchronization based on the association of spatio-temporal redundancy reductions (ASTR), which can reduce the screen data transfer further. The temporal redundancy between the current changed screen area and the previous frame is taken into account. An improved SSC-APDS (Subsampling Search Candidates in Adjustable Partial Distortion Search) algorithm is presented, which can increase the speed of the block motion estimation (BME) prominently. Experimental results show that this novel approach can reduce more bandwidth consumption of transferring the screen data than others, which quite caters for the requirements of the ubiquitous environments.

Use of the Internet has increased rapidly, and data communications have changed from being hobby-based to becoming essential for daily living. It is important for everybody to easily obtain necessary information from anywhere and at any, time to confidently attain a true information society infrastructure in the future. The terminals are one of the most important elements. To obtain reliable information in the same environment anywhere and at any time, the introduction of a server-based computing (SBC) system is promising, because a SBC system accumulates and processes information in the one place. Cellular phones are also useful as terminals to easily achieve information access anywhere and at any time. To achieve an SBC system for cellular phones that can operate comfortably, we propose a light-weight protocol called the ''UI component oriented protocol" and a function of speculative execution based on the prediction of user events. Moreover, we implemented a prototype system, and confirmed that our system worked quickly within the communications environment of cellular phones.

This paper proposes the international business operating system that is constructed by Internet VPN, which has the advantage of cheap communication cost, and server-based computing method. High security communication is realized using IC cards and authentication platform. We tried to apply to this system for a global business operating system which was actually used in an insurance company. As the result of verification of availability of this method between Tokyo and London, it turned out that we could use this system for easy business operation. This paper also reports on the application method of Multi-homing technology to improve the transmission quality of Internet VPN.

Choosing information technology (IT) is a high-risk guessing game to some extent because of its strategic nature within organizations and the threat of obsolescence as it turns over rapidly. Because the course of enterprise computing has been dictated by prevailing technologies and expedited by competitive pressures and its strategic significance, complex heterogeneous architectures have become wide spread. The typical enterprise utilizes centralized legacy mainframe and midrange, distributed client server, and is quickly adapting the newest to the mix, Internet/intranet. Moving into each strategy has presented enormous investments in time and new technologies, for which the unsuspecting executive has witnessed ever-shrinking periods of investment payback. Overall the picture is a confused mix of disparate systems presenting significant challenges to the enterprise and its IT staff. Going forward the successful enterprise-computing model will be based on integrated applications and systems, a more manageable architecture that is complemented rather than disturbed by new technologies, and a simplified client device that is independent of the enterprise operating environment. This paper presents server-based computing as a strategy that facilitates simplifying the desktop by migrating its complexities and liabilities into a more effectively managed centralized location, while delivering the same level of functionality and familiar user interface. This approach isolates the dependency of the desktop, and fosters time-to-value, quality of service and administrative effectiveness, universal accessibility, high security, long-term growth and adaptability, and relatively low cost of ownership.
