This contribution presents an approach for generating and modelling spatially referenced, multi-dimensional urban models from remote sensing data for regions where no reliable reference data are available. The focus is on a modular service-oriented process chain covering the entire process from data acquisition to effective web-based visualization, addressing raw data, preprocessing, management, spatial analyses, visualisation and applications. The use case, investigated in the framework of a EU-funded multidisciplinary R+D project, is the cityspace of East Jerusalem (about 190 about 190 sqkm). Due to the controversial geopolitical situation, usable and high-resolution reference data of the complex, granular urban fabric is unavailable. Hence very high-resolution stereo aerial images (571 pcs. 'a 10 cm GSD) were acquired and photogram-metrically processed to build a high-resolution 3D reference point cloud. Corresponding semantic data from various sources and household surveys (3,500 pcs.) specially conducted were integrated into the data and managed within a unified, fully-referenced 3D database (opensource). The resulting virtual urban 3D model includes functionalities for geospatial exploration and analysis, allowing spatio-temporal applications, such as land use/management, social/technical infrastructure, or tourism for documentation, information, education as well as decision-making. It addresses both the local civil society and, through specific functions, urban planners and decision makers. Analysis and interaction functionalities are provided in a user-oriented and application-related framework, taking into account effective visualisation (cartographic and visual gestalt principles). The independent spatial reference of a multiscale grid is used for spatial analyses and visualisation purposes. The generic construction of the dedicated virtual cityspace allows for the transferability of results.

service-oriented computing offers efficient solutions for executing complex applications in an acceptable amount of time. These solutions provide important computing and storage resources, but they are too difficult for individual users to handle. In fact, service-oriented architectures are usually sophisticated in terms of design, specifications, and deployment. On the other hand, workflow management systems provide frameworks that help users to manage cooperative and interdependent processes in a convivial manner. In this paper, we propose a workflow-based approach to fully take advantage of new service-oriented architectures that take the users' skills and the internal complexity of their applications into account. To get to this point, we defined a novel framework named JASMIN, which is responsible for managing service-oriented workflows on distributed systems. JASMIN has two main components: unified modeling language (UML) to specify workflow models and business process execution language (BPEL) to generate and compose Web services. In order to cover both workflow and service concepts, we describe in this paper a refinement of UML activity diagrams and present a set of rules for mapping UML activity diagrams into BPEL specifications.

Using an appropriate workflow platform and a service-oriented architecture can simplify the management of a grid-based scientific workflow life cycle. As this case study shows, such an approach can facilitate the successful creation, deployment, execution, and monitoring of a grid-based workflow for calculating material dielectric properties based on quantum mechanical simulation.

In the paper the Semantic Web services (SWS) composition is considered as a process of manipulating of complex service-oriented ontology-based workflows. The task for the composition is formulated as combining of existing semantic web services into package of services using service templates as composition patterns. Fulfillment of this objective is achieved by developing of workflow-based tool for graphical creation of SWS compositions using WSMO services and domain knowledge represented as WSML ontologies. The main aim of the proposed approach is to facilitate the reusing of software services. The Semantic Web services Composer is a part of Semantic Web Unit (Atanasova et al, 2005) within the INFRAWEBS project. The SWS INFRAWEBS Composer is considered in the Design time and in the Run time. The Design-time Composer is intended to construct templates of semantic services combinations. On the base of these pre-defined plan templates and logical discovery the Run-time Composer will realize binding of concrete web services and will assist user in constructing its own composite service. Both Design-time and Run-time SWS Composers use the previous service compositions.
