In an effort to produce more efficient means of transforming new algorithm concepts into working models, this paper describes the development of a digital signal processing workstation accepting input entirely in graphic form. This Graphic Oriented signal processing Language (GOSPL) accepts flow graph information in block diagram form using a mouse input device. The researcher uses the mouse to describe graph connections and create function blocks in the flow graph by selecting them from a menu. The system executes a broad class of flow graphs and provides virtual instruments to monitor signals throughout the graph during real-time execution.

A UNIFIED APPROACH TO SCRAMBLING FILTER DESIGN

Most speech scrambling systems are either linear periodic filters or can be modeled as such, It is well-known that from an input-output point of view, a periodic filter is equivalent to a multi-input multi-output linear time-invariant system and thus a rational transfer matrix, In this paper, we propose a framework, based on transfer matrices and frequency domain descriptions, for analysis and design of speech scrambling filters, We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a scrambling system to be insensitive to frame synchronization error, We propose a procedure for the design of scrambling filters that are insensitive to synchronization error and have zero bandwidth expansion. An illustrative design example is given.

Performance of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Under Imperfect Channel State Information and Reciprocity Calibration

This article studies the downlink performance of a cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system with imperfect channel estimation and reciprocity calibration. We present the statistical characteristics of the calibration error with the Argos algorithm and a relay-based calibration algorithm to obtain the calibration parameters of the whole network. Then, we derive approximate expressions of the downlink spectral efficiency for a cell-free massive MIMO system with imperfect channel state information and calibration error. The numerical results show the advantage of the proposed calibration algorithm and validate the accuracy of the theoretical expressions.

SCHUR TYPE algorithms FOR SPATIAL LS ESTIMATION WITH HIGHLY PIPELINED ARCHITECTURES

A family of Schur type spatial LS algorithms are presented to solve the spatial LS estimation problem, in which the correlation matrix is neither Toeplitz nor near-to-Toeplitz, by order recursion. The spatial Levinson and Schur type recursions are the extensions of the classical Levinson and Schur recursions which solve Toeplitz systems. Normalized spatial Levinson and Schur type algorithms are also derived. Highly pipelined architectures are designed to realize these recursions which have highly modular structures and localized communications. Specifically, the reflection coefficients are first computed using the spatial Schur type recursions. Then, the forward and backward filter parameters are calculated by the spatial Levinson type recursions. A pyramid systolic array is demonstrated to calculate not only the filter parameters but also the LDU decomposition of the inverse cross-correlation matrix at every clock phase. This pyramid array can be mapped onto a two-dimensional systolic array which has a simpler structure. A square systolic array is developed to implement the Levinson and Schur type temporal RLS algorithms. Finally, a highly concurrent architecture which exploits the parallelism of the spatial Schur type recursions is illustrated to perform the LDU decomposition of the cross-correlation matrix.

Shaping frequency-dependent time resolution when estimating spectral properties with parametric methods

The problem of tracking time-varying properties of a signal is studied. The somewhat contradictory notion of ''time-varying spectrum'' and how to estimate the ''current'' spectrum in an on-line fashion is discussed. The traditional concepts and relations between time and frequency resolution are crucial for this problem. We introduce two definitions for the time resolution of filters, essentially measuring the effective number of past data that are used to form the estimate. In, for example, wavelet transform techniques, frequency-dependent time resolutions are used so that fewer data are used at higher frequencies, thus enabling faster tracking of high-frequency components (at the price of worse frequency resolution). The main contribution of the paper is to show how this same feature can be introduced when estimating spectra via a time-varying, autoregressive model of the signal. This is achieved by a special choice of nominal covariance matrix for the underlying parameter changes.

An adaptive code-aided technique for the simultaneous suppression of narrow-band interference (NBI) and multiple-access interference (MAI) in direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) networks is proposed. This technique is based on the recursive least-squares (RLS) version of the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) algorithm for multiuser detection. The convergence dynamics of the RLS blind adaptive algorithm for suppressing the combined NBI and MAI are analyzed. The steady-state performance of this algorithm in terms of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is also derived, Systolic array structures for parallel implementations of the RLS adaptive interference suppression algorithms are then proposed, Versions of the rotation-based QR-RLS algorithms for both the blind adaptation mode and the decision-directed adaptation mode are derived. These algorithms exhibit high degrees of parallelism, and can be mapped to VLSI systolic arrays to exploit massively parallel signal processing computation.

Robust and Unambiguous Four-Channel Monopulse Two-Target Resolution: A Polarimetric Closed-Form Approach

Four-channel monopulse (FCM) technique is integral to contemporary radar systems for pinpointing and tracking multiple targets. However, the practical utility of FCM is significantly hindered by the issue of estimation failure, which arises from the specific relative phases and positions of the targets. In this paper, we introduce a polarimetric four-channel monopulse (PFCM) approach designed to deliver efficient, robust, and unambiguous resolution of two targets. Generally, PFCM adaptively modulates the null-polarization for each target. We begin by dissecting the limitations of the traditional method, utilizing the closed-form solution of FCM. Subsequently, we devise a novel closed-form solution that harnesses polarimetric adaptive nulling (PAN) technology to estimate the angles of the two targets under two distinct scenarios: the ideal condition and angular ambiguity. Under ideal conditions, estimation is conducted directly using the received signals. Incorporating polarization information mitigates the estimation results' sensitivity to relative phase. To counteract the challenges of PAN failure in angular ambiguity situations, the proposed PFCM adeptly resolves the two targets by reconstructing the four-channel signal, indicating its applicability across various relative target positions. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive performance analysis focusing on three critical aspects. As a result, two closely spaced targets can be resolved robustly and unambiguously with minimal complexity. Numerical simulations and experimental results are substantiated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

DIRECTION AND POLARIZATION ESTIMATION USING ARRAYS WITH SMALL LOOPS AND SHORT DIPOLES

This paper shows that when polarization-sensitive arrays consisting of crossed small loops and short dipoles are used, one can eliminate the requirement in the ESPRIT algorithm that sensors must occur in matched pairs. The dipoles and loops are sensitive to the polarizations of incident electromagnetic plane waves. The dipoles are sensitive to the incident electric field components and the loops to magnetic field components of the incident waves. We exploit the invariance properties among the dipole and loop outputs of an arbitrary array of orthogonal loops and orthogonal dipoles to compute both the two-dimensional arrival angles and polarizations of incoming narrow-band signals. We also show that with dipoles and loops, vertical arrays are not necessary to obtain good direction estimates for signals from low angles.

Efficient Coherent Integration Detection for Space-Moving Target With Complex Azimuth Doppler Ambiguity

The space-moving target (SMT) poses a great challenge for coherent integration detection because of the across range cell (ARC) and Doppler frequency broadening (DFB) induced by the relative motions between SMT and radar platform. Moreover, the intricate azimuth Doppler ambiguity complicates the coherent integration of SMT. To tackle these challenges, a proficient method for the coherent integration of SMT detection under complex azimuth Doppler ambiguity is introduced. First, a modified second-order keystone transform (MSoKT) operation based on the new deramp function with regulatory factor is presented to address the quadratic ARC (QARC) and Doppler spectrum ambiguity. Second, the linear ARC (LARC) is eliminated by the proposed novel processing procedure based on the improved range frequency reversal transform (IRFRT) and modified 2-D scaled Fourier transform (2DSCFT) without searching of Doppler ambiguity number. Third, the DFB is removed by the 1-D scaled Fourier transform (1DSCFT) with minimal computational overhead. After that, the well-focused result of SMT is obtained. The proposed method demonstrates computational efficiency, as its implementation involves only the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and complex multiplication operations, while also eliminating the need to search for Doppler ambiguity numbers. The presented method exhibits robustness against complex azimuth Doppler ambiguity and can effectively address the ambiguous speed sidelobe (ASSL). The multitarget scenario is further investigated, and a strategy for identifying spurious peaks caused by cross terms is proposed. Real data results are provided to validate the method's performance in scenarios involving both single and multiple targets.
