When geophysical variables are estimated from remotely sensed electromagnetic data, severe difficulties are often encountered because of the ill-posed nature of the problem, so that the use of effective processing becomes essential. The inversion of radiometric data in the retrieval of atmospheric temperature profiles is considered and the use of the Kalman filter algorithm is analyzer to assess its performance from the point of view of accuracy of estimates and spatial resolution. The sensitivity to experimental errors is pointed out and the use of adaptive filtering to reduce the inaccuracy of data is examined. With regard to spectra of radiometric fluctuations, the performance of recently proposed spectral estimation techniques, amenable to the originally proposed maximum entropy method, are considered. The estimate of line parameters to identify and follow the temporal evolution of atmospheric internal oscillations is discussed, as well as the accuracy of retrieval of the slopes of radiometric turbulent spectra.

Traditional satellite signal processing methods sacrifice the performance of other aspects when optimizing one aspect of the satellite signal processing system. This paper constructed a multi-objective optimization model based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) and built a framework based on the improved genetic algorithm. By comparing with the LSM (Least Mean Squares) algorithm, the NSGA-II algorithm has the shortest average processing time of 28.99ms and the minimum error rate of 1.27%, which is better than the LSM algorithm. The research results show that this method can improve the performance of the satellite signal processing system.

This paper presents a new approach for signal processing method based on matrix pencil method, which is effective for exponential signal. The principle of matrix pencil method is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD), and the characteristics of the singular value are analysed for the high signal-to-noise (SNR). If reduced gradient of the singular value is less than the threshold value, the part of signal should be subdivision by wavelet packet, and then make it fusion with the result of matrix pencil method. The simulation results show that the improved signal processing method based on matrix pencil method has significant filtering effect and less restrictive applied field

Partial likelihood (PL) establishes a general framework to develop and study statistical properties of nonlinear techniques in signal processing. Adali et al. (1997) presented the theorem by which the fundamental information-theoretic relationship for learning on the PL cost, the equivalence of likelihood maximization and relative entropy minimization, is established. In this paper, we reformulate the theorem to incorporate both the continuous and discrete probability modeling. We further show that, in both cases, the two conditions of the theorem are satisfied for the basic class of probability models, the exponential family, which includes many important network structures that can be effectively used as probability models. Hence we provide the prospect of using the PL cost in a wide class of applications with different models. We also propose several algorithms for learning/estimating the optimal model parameters by PL maximization. We give examples to illustrate the application of our general formulation and the corresponding learning algorithms.

A digital filtering algorithm to simulate DC-to-DC power converters is presented. This algorithm models the switches as a controller which controls the topology of the load circuit. The controller characteristic is derived from the switching criteria of the converter circuit. Depending on which switches are "on" or "off," the controller simply provides the appropriate input source to the load circuit. This algorithm is applied to both one and two quadrant DC-to-DC converters. The simulation results based on the implementation of this algorithm are then presented.

A neural network architecture is applied to the problem of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using a linear array. A three layer radial basis function network (RBFN) is trained with input output pairs. The network is then capable of estimating DOA not included in the training set through generalization. This approach reduces the extensive computations required by conventional superresolution algorithms such as MUSIC and is easier to implement in real-time. The results suggest that the performance of the RBFNN method approaches that of the MUSIC algorithm. In real time the fast convergence rates of neural networks will allow the array to track mobile sources.

Moore's Law continues to drive higher levels of processing capacity, and in doing so, processes that were once deemed too costly now find their way into newly fielded products. In particular, multi-rate systems that digitally decompose a wideband signal into a continuous set of sub-band signals are now coming into common use. To enable this technique an efficient set of multi-rate algorithms must be used. The algorithms described in this paper are polyphase decomposition (analysis) and reconstruction (synthesis) algorithms that possess the pseudo perfect reconstruction property. Examples of system designs are described that point out the design trades of prototype filter size and type, word sizes, multiple decimation and interpolation rates, and filter design to achieve a specified baseband equivalent filter. The resulting designs show the tremendous efficiencies in required compute capacity for applications such as radar, electronic warfare, and communications systems. The sub-bands of these systems are processed in many ways including Doppler processing, pulse compression and space-time adaptive processing for radar; signal detection, parameter estimation and techniques generation for EW; data demodulation, limiting and modulation for communications. Additionally, in each case, depending on the type of system, processing may perform receive and transmit beamforming or an angle of arrival interferometer within the sub-bands or subsets of the sub-bands allowing manipulation of distinct band portions of the wideband signal

A front-end radar array processing system that operates in the subband domain is considered. It is assumed that pulse compression will be performed on radar return signals in the subband domain. A cohesive algorithm is presented that optimizes the design of all filters used in the subbanding process. These include the analysis filter (used to decompose return signals into narrowband components), the synthesis filter (used when combining subband components after processing), and the pulse compression generating filter (used to generate subband pulse compression filters from a wideband pulse compression filter). The algorithm attempts to minimize system aliasing noise, frequency distortion, and subband processing operations count.

Array microphones are frequently used in the field of speech signal applications. In this paper a use case for array microphones combined with signal processing and IEEE 802.1 AVB Ethernet-based audio signal transmission is presented. The proposed application is intended for conferencing systems. The array microphones with beam steering and sound source localization algorithm are used to span multiple speakers' recording areas. The benefit is the elimination of separate table microphones for the speakers.

This paper presents a novel teaching software, namely ISSP, based on plug-in. It can assist in exploring the concepts and arithmetic of statistical signal processing. It is based on plug-in and host framework. This consists of two host applications, one for the normal application, and the other for the Web-based applications. The host application is used as an intermediate layer between system and plug-ins. These plug-ins are designed to do the actually work while the running environment is supported by host. Specifically, most plug-ins could run on both of the host applications. In the normal host applications, the user could do with demonstration, debugging with MATLAB, visualizing all the data for plotting and composing the experiment report. This application could be used in teaching and studying statistical signal processing.
