In this paper a new algorithm of three-level three dimensional space vector modulation (3DSVM) is presented for three-level four-leg diode-clamped inverter. The proposed algorithm can reduce remarkably the complexity of 3DSVM by using two sectors only (sector one and sector two) in the conception of all modulation algorithm steps such as: determination of the space vector location, duration time calculation, and pulses generation. The voltage-balancing control of two split DC capacitors of the three-level four-leg converter is achieved using three-level 3DSVM with balancing strategy. This later based on the effective use of the redundant switching states of the inverter voltage vectors. Complete simulation of the results validates the efficiency of the proposed 3DSVM algorithm. The good performance of the proposed modulation technique is demonstrated from simulation for a three-level four-leg diode-clamped inverter.

Generalized Modulation of Common Mode Voltage Reduction for Current Source Inverter in Balanced and Unbalanced Load Cases

The common mode voltage (CMV) has been extensively investigated as a significant issue under balanced voltage conditions. However, in practical applications, voltage asymmetry caused by load imbalance can lead to an increase in the magnitude of CMV. Therefore, in the presence of load imbalance, it is necessary to adjust the arrangement of switch state to control the output voltage, and redesign the CMV suppression strategy. To overcome these issues, this article proposes a general modulation aimed at suppressing CMV in two cases: balance and unbalanced load. Compared with traditional space vector modulation (SVM), the proposed modulation can reduce the peak of CMV to approximately 43.3%-50% under the balanced load and 50% under the unbalanced load. In addition, although three-dimensional SVM (3-D SVM) is a common modulation strategy for four-leg inverters, it suffers from computationally complex problems in its implementation. Therefore, a simplified method is proposed based on 3-D SVM. After being simplified, the calculation time of the modulation can be reduced. Then, a comprehensive comparison is conducted between the proposed and other modulation strategies. Finally, a four-leg CSI is built in the laboratory. Experimental and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method under balanced and unbalanced load conditions.

A simplified Space Vector Modulation in abc Coordinate for Four-Leg Current Source Inverters

Three-dimensional space vector modulations (3-D SVMs), while inheriting the advantages of two-dimensional space vector modulations (2-D SVMs), have the capability to generate asymmetrical currents, making them widely applied in four-leg inverters. However, the computational burden due to the expansion of space and vectors adds potential limitations to the application of 3-D SVM. To overcome this limitation, this article proposes a simplified 3-D SVM based on the abc coordinate system, which is designed for four-leg current source inverters. The recognition of tetrahedra and the calculation of duration time is simplified through thoughtful design. This algorithm avoids irrational operations and table lookups, eliminates pointer function calculations, and alleviates the computational burden on the processor. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed 3-D SVM.

In order to solve the problem of computational burden in the process of multi-step model predictive current control (MPCC) of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM), two simplified multi-step predictive control strategies are proposed. The conventional multi-step model predictive current control (C-MPCC) model of SPMSM is established. Based on the law of voltage vector selection, a simplified strategy (S-MPCC) is proposed. Taking n-step prediction (n >= 2) as an example, C-MPCC needs (7((n+1))-7)/6 current prediction calculations and (7(n)-1) data comparison operations, while S-MPCC only needs (2n-1)x7 current prediction calculations and (25n-26) data comparison operations. Based on S-MPCC, another strategy to use an adding judgment to reduce calculation burden (S-MPCC-II) is proposed. Simulation results show that the motor system works properly under the control of the S-MPCC and S-MPCC-II. The control performances are almost the same as the C-MPCC. The execution time of three strategies in a single control cycle are compared based on the STM32H743 MCU platform. Experimental results show that the prediction time and the data comparison time in cost function optimization of S-MPCC are only 0.32% and 0.59% of C-MPCC, and the whole execution time of single control cycle is reduced to 0.30%. And the S-MPCC-II control strategy can further reduce the computational burden and improve the real-time performance of the system while maintaining the same control performances as the S-MPCC.

Exploring the Effects of Climate-Adaptive Building Shells: An Applicative Time-Saving algorithm on a Case Study in Bologna, Italy

Adaptive facades represent a viable and effective technological solution to reduce the building energy demand for cooling while achieving interesting aesthetic effects on the building envelope to screen solar radiation. During the last decade, many different design solutions, including those based on shape memory alloys, have been experimented to obtain appropriate responses without being dependent on electro-mechanically actuated systems. Several recent and ongoing studies have been published in the scientific literature regarding the different actuator typologies, as well as the different properties of the materials used, which usually determine the adaptive solution characteristics after a series of complex and time-consuming simulations using specialised dynamic modelling software. Due to the time and resources required, this kind of evaluation is usually delivered during the last and more advanced design stage as a form of assessment of already-taken architectural and technological choices. The study reported in the paper aims to offer a quick, time-saving simplified algorithm to calculate the response of an adaptive facade, according to the ISO 13790 standards, to be adopted during the early design stage to evaluate the possible effects of design decisions. The study includes three main steps: (a) the conceptualisation of the adaptive solution considering the context conditions;(b) the definition of the calculation algorithm;(c) the application of the method to a test room in a case study building located in Bologna for supporting the discussion of the related outcomes.

Study of the Hydration Temperature Field in the Hinge Seal Layer for a Large-Volume UHPC Arch Base

For large arch bridges, the sealing hinge layer at the arch footing is critical to the long-term performance and durability of the structure. This study investigated the temperature distribution of the sealing hinge layer inside a large UHPC arch seat during the hydration process in a natural environment, based on a design of a 600-m-span reinforced concrete rigid skeleton arch bridge. A certain suggestion for the design of a large-volume UHPC layer was proposed through the consideration of temperature and age effects of the thermal field solid finite element analysis of early-age UHPC hydration heat. The results show that UHPC has a hydration induction period of 10 h and reaches the peak temperature of 69 degrees C in 20 h. Then, the hydration heat is gradually released in 70 h after pouring. The maximum temperature difference between the core and surface reaches 40 degrees C. The results also show that the early temperature field and heat release rate of UHPC are affected by initial temperature. The actual heat release of some materials of UHPC components at 75 h is equivalent to that at 300 h, and the minimum effective age was found close to 100 h, where the heat release reaches 0.25 of the total heat release. A simplified algorithm for the spatially time-varying non-linear temperature field of the UHPC sealing hinge layer under the influence of temperature and age is proposed, which provides a simple calculation method for the temperature control of the UHPC arch seat during the hydration process in real projects.

When the offset between the transmitter and the receiver in the multibeam is large, neglecting the offset will introduce depth errors into the multibeam footprints. Although the current non-concentric algorithm (NCCA) considers this offset, its model is complicated and time-consuming. To solve the issues, a simplified method is developed. First, the offset is considered by constructing two separated intersecting triangles projected by the transmitted and received cones under the array reference frame (ARF);second, two groups of the footprint coordinates under the ARF are calculated with slant ranges from the transmitter and receiver to the footprint, respectively;then, the transmitted and received vectors, and their corresponding one-way travel times (OWTTs) are calculated by the two coordinates;finally, an iteration is used to adjust the two slant ranges according to the measured and the calculated time, and the optimal location of the footprint will be obtained. To verify the proposed method, comparisons between existing methods and ours are made. The results indicate that when the depth is about 457 m, the average depth deviation between the NCCA and ours is only 0.03 m. And our new method saves about 17% of computation time compared to that of the NCCA.

Aiming at reducing computational complexity in the multi-step model predictive torque control (MPTC), a novel simplified multi-step MPTC algorithm (P-MPTC) was proposed. Firstly, a multi-step MPTC model was established, and the computational burden of the traditional MPTC (T-MPTC) was discussed. Secondly, based on the MPTC with simplified voltage set (S-MPTC), a simplified MPTC with voltage holding approach (P-MPTC) was proposed, which avoided enumerating all the voltage vectors in candidate set to simplify the computation. Finally, the proposed MPTC algorithm was compared with T-MPTC and S-MPTC to analyze the differences of control performance and computational burden. The result shows that, the proposed simplified algorithm can greatly reduce the computational complexity of multi-step MPTC while the control performance almost not change. For example, in the six-step MPTC, the computational burden in the proposed simplified algorithm is only 0.02% of that in the traditional algorithm, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
