Estimation of PV module parameters from the manufacturer's datasheet for MPP estimation

A study has been performed to extract the unknown parameters of a photovoltaic (PV) module using mathematical model-driven analysis. Neglecting the less significant terms, the number of non-linear exponential terms are reduced to develop a simplified algorithm to estimate five unknown parameters such as diode ideality factor, series resistance, shunt resistance, diode saturation current and photogenerated current of a single diode model PV module accurately with less computational complexities from the manufacturer's datasheet values. Substituting the estimated values of the unknown parameters, the PV module output power is obtained at different irradiance and temperature, which shows close co-ordination with the datasheet values. To improve the accuracy in the estimation of the PV module output using the proposed model, the nominal operating cell temperature (NOCT) is considered. The results of the proposed model are verified with the experimental output of two (one 315 Wp and another 3 Wp) PV modules, which shows better correlation with the proposed model considering NOCT. The measurement uncertainty to obtain the output power experimentally is not more than 6.88%.

Concrete spherical joint contact stress distribution and overturning moment of swing bridge

The present study aims to address the instability mode of the concrete spherical joint in order to guarantee the safety of the rotating process of the swing bridge. A new critical overturning moment model is proposed to calculate the overturning moment of swing bridge based on the non-Hertz contact theory, and it is validated against the engineering application of the Nandu River Swing Bridge construction. The research indicates that the Non-Hertz contact theory has superiority compared to the widely applied simplified formulation on the spherical joint surface stress calculation, by contrasting the results of the finite element model and the data collected during field monitoring. Furthermore, the resistance of the overturning coefficient is calculated, and the result turns out that the critical resistance of the overturning coefficient based on the Non-Hertz contact theory is closer to the measured values compared to the simplified algorithm. The present research demonstrates the applicability of applying the new proposed formula to guarantee the safety of the rotating process during the swing bridge construction.

This paper considers the longitudinal compound control of air-breathing hypersonic vehicles configured with hybrid aerodynamic control surface (ACS) and reaction control system (RCS). In the altitude loop, the proposed nonadaptive back-stepping design results in a simplified ACS-RCS compound control. This is attributable to the introduced tangent tracking errors and ACS-RCS fusion algorithm. ACS nonlinearity, RCS quantization, and modeling parametric uncertainties are handled. In the velocity loop, the performance guaranteed adaptive control is enhanced with the bound estimation mechanism, which accommodates modeling parametric uncertainties with a low dynamic order. Voltage stability is a crucial factor in power system operation. When bus voltage exceeds the operation limits because of change of the operation mode, load in the network or the environmental factors, appropriate control actions should be taken to guarantee a secure system operation, avoiding emergency situations or voltage collapse. Development and improvement of the algorithm for voltage security correction is a significant subject. This paper makes several improvements on the usual voltage security correction algorithms, and a new simplified algorithm based on sensitivity analysis is proposed. Emphasize is placed on the reduction of calculation scale in the selection of the control devices, fast calculation of the sensitivities and the calculation of the adjustment quantities. With only a few buses involved in the calculation, the simplified correction algorithm can guarantee high-speed and accuracy in most cases and is especially useful for online applications. An example of the New England 39 buses system is used to verify the effectiveness of the simplified algorithm.

Multiphysics simulation of the material removal process in pulse electrochemical machining (PECM)

For the time scale of the applied pulses is orders of magnitude smaller than the time scale on which the workpiece is machined, simulation of the temperature evolution and the changes of the workpiece shape in pulse electrochemical machining (PECM) process would be a computationally very expensive procedure. A multi-physics model and the quasi steady state shortcut (QSSSC) approach are presented for modeling the temperature evolution in PECM process. By defining a critical upper limit, a simplified algorithm is introduced to simulate the changes of workpiece shape in PECM process. The assumption is made that geometry structure is fixed before the system reaches the quasi steady state (QSS) and the material removal is calculated by current density when the QSS is reached. Simulation results indicate that the simplified algorithm is convenient for the calculation of the shape change of the electrodes. The validity of the simplified algorithm is verified by the comparison of workpiece profiles obtained by simulation prediction and experiments.

Generalized Theory and Analysis of Scalar Modulation Techniques for a m x n Matrix Converter

The basic requirement of all the scalar modulation strategies employed for matrix converter, is to define the desired output voltages. The output phase voltages, if not optimized, results in underutilization of semiconductor device ratings. For better utilization, the output reference phase voltages are modified such that the sinusoidal nature of line voltages is not altered. Multiphase drives are in consideration and much work is being done and reported on multiphase matrix converter-based system. New modulation strategies for such systems are being formulated. Most of these new strategies are based on scalar approach;which in contrast to the space vector pulse width modulation, require addition of friendly harmonics in order to achieve optimized output reference phase voltages and maximum utilization of the matrix converter semiconductor switches. On the other hand, in space vector pulse width modulation, the maximum voltages are inherently achieved. This paper presents a generalized theory, explained in mathematical as well as graphical manner, defining the optimized output reference phase voltages for any number of input and output phases, whether odd or even, for m x n matrix converter. Further, this paper also explores the Venturini method for m x n case. It is found that the method is extendable to 3 x n matrix converters only. Finally, a simple and generalized algorithm, applicable to all m x n matrix converter configurations, is discussed. Results for 3 x 5 matrix converter are validated by simulation and experimental results.

Selected Prediction Vectors Based FS-PTC for 3L-NPC Inverter Fed Motor Drives

Computational burden is a major hurdle for practical implementation of finite-state predictive torque control (FS-PTC) of motor drive fed by a multilevel inverter. One of the reasons of computational complexity is that all voltage vectors are evaluated for prediction and actuation. This paper proposes a reduced number of voltage vectors for the prediction and actuation, which are called prediction vectors in FS-PTC. The performance is investigated for a three-level neutral-point clamped inverter fed motor drive in terms of torque and flux response, stator current total harmonic distortion, robustness, average switching frequency, and neutral-point voltage variation. The number of prediction vectors is reduced based on the position of stator flux and the deviation in stator flux from its reference. Experimental results confirm that the computational burden could be reduced by 38%, while the dynamic performance is comparable with the conventional all voltage vectors based FS-PTC.

A simplified Finite-State Predictive Direct Torque Control for Induction Motor Drive

Finite-state predictive torque control (FS-PTC) is computationally expensive, since it uses all voltage vectors (VVs) available from a power converter for prediction and actuation. The computational burden is rapidly increased with the number of VVs and objectives to be controlled. Moreover, designing a cost function with more than two control objectives is a complex task. This paper proposes a simplified algorithm based on a new direct torque control (DTC) switching table to reduce the number of VVs to be predicted and objectives to be controlled. The new switching table also assists to reduce average switching frequency and its variation range. As a result, the cost function is simplified by not requiring to include the frequency term. Experimental results show that the average execution time and the average switching frequency for the proposed algorithm are greatly reduced without affecting the torque and flux performances achieved in the conventional FS-PTC.

Basing on the amount of solar radiation simulated, this paper use Ecotect for simulation to supplement the common shading coefficient calculation methods, and according to the common paradigms, add two independent variables, which are influential to external shading coefficient. The new fitting formulas have been got for the form of horizontal and vertical shading devices, which would provide a simplified algorithm to calculate external shading coefficient more accurately.

In recent years, finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has received considerable attention, because it has many advantages such as flexibility in the definition of control objectives, ease of implementation and fast dynamic response. However, some drawbacks of FCS-MPC, such as requiring a large amount of calculations, have also hindered its range of applications. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a simplified MPC (S-MPC). The method called S-MPC only requires one prediction to find the best voltage vector, which reduces the computational burden. The relationship between SMPC and FCS-MPC is studied and it is found that in some cases, S-MPC is completely equivalent to FCS-MPC. In comparison with conventional FCS-MPC, the computation load of S-MPC is reduced, while the control performance is not affected. Simulation and experimental results on a two-level ACmC converter were carried out to verify the good performance of the proposed method.
