Novel sequential and simultaneous infrared-accelerated drying technologies for the food industry: Principles, applications and challenges

Infrared drying (IRD) is considered an innovative drying solution for the food industry with advantages of energy-saving potentials, reduced drying time and production cost-effectiveness. However, IRD also suffers from drawbacks such as weak penetrative ability, and product overheating and burning. Therefore, over the years, significant progress has been made to overcome these shortcomings by developing infrared-accelerated drying (IRAD) technology based on the combination of IRD with other drying technologies. Although several reviews have been published on IRD, no review focusing on IRAD is yet available. The current review presents up-to-date knowledge and findings on the applications of IRAD technologies for enhancing the quality and safety of food. The fundamental principles and characteristics of IRAD, energy-saving potentials, simulation and optimization approaches for enhancing efficiency, and developments in various acceleration approaches by combining with other drying techniques for achieving better end-products are discussed, and challenges and future work for developing the novel accelerated drying technology are also presented. Due to the synergistic effects of sequential or simultaneous combined drying methods, the total drying time and energy required are drastically lowered with most IRAD technologies, and consequently there are significant improvements in the sensory, nutritional, and safety attributes of dried food products with better appearance and quality. The development of multi-wavelength IRAD systems based on infrared absorption bands, and the incorporation of novel sensing techniques for real-time monitoring during drying will further enhance process efficiency and food quality and safety.

Cross-scale modeling and optimization analysis of the solid oxide fuel cell cogeneration system based on the heat current method

The multi-scale, multi-component, multi-process, and multi-parameter characteristics increase intermediate variables and complexity of modeling and analysis of solid oxide fuel cell cogeneration systems. This paper applied the standard thermal resistance for constructing the heat current model to analyze the overall heat transfer performance of the external heat exchangers. On this basis, the research introduced the equivalent electric circuit for presenting the internal electrochemical process and then proposed the overall cross-scale modeling of the solid oxide fuel cell cogeneration system from the internal heat and mass transfer and elec-trochemical processes to the various external heat exchangers. Moreover, considering the internal and external multi-processes, the system's overall constraints were derived. The simulation results show that the total energy utilization rate of the solid oxide fuel cell cogeneration system is 79.12 %. Besides, the influences of water-to-carbon ratio, excess air coefficient, thermal conductances of each heat exchanger, and ambient temperature on the system performance were developed. The optimal operation parameters are given for improving the maximum net power generation of the system. Finally, the proposed cross-scale modeling method is feasible and convenient for analyzing and improving the solid oxide fuel cell cogeneration system.

Multi-Energy Microgrids Incorporating EV Integration: Optimal Design and Resilient Operation

There are numerous opportunities and challenges in integrating multiple energy sources, for example, electrical, heat, and electrified transportation. The operation of multi-energy sources needs to be coordinated and optimized to achieve maximum benefits and reliability. To address the electrical, thermal, and transportation electrification energy demands in a sustainable and environmentally friendly multi-energy microgrid, this paper presents a mixed integer linear optimization model that determines an optimized blend of energy sources (battery, combined heat and power units, thermal energy storage, gas boiler, and photovoltaic generators), size, and associated dispatch. The proposed energy management system seeks to minimize total annual expenses while simultaneously boosting system resilience during extended grid outages, based on an hourly electrical and thermal load profile. This approach has been tested in a hospital equipped with an EV charging station in Okinawa, Japan through several case studies. Following a M1/M2/c queuing model, the proposed grid-tied microgrid successfully integrates EVs into the system and assures continued and economic power supply even during grid failures in different weather conditions.

Simulating and optimizing precast wall lifting in prefabricated building construction

PurposePrecast wall lifting during prefabricated building construction faces multiple non-lean problems, such as inaccurate lifting-time estimation, unreasonable resource allocation and improper process design. This study aims to identify the pathways for improving lifting performance to advance lean construction of prefabricated ***/methodology/approachThis study developed a methodological framework that integrates the discrete event simulation method, the elimination, combination, rearrangement and simplification (ECRS) technique and intelligent optimization tool. Two schemes of precast wall lifting, namely, the enterprise's business as usual (BAU) and enterprise-leading (EL) schemes, were set to benchmark lifting performance. Furthermore, a best-practice (BP) scheme was modeled from the perspective of lifting activity ECRS and resource allocation for performance *** real project was selected to test the effect of the methodological framework. The results showed that compared with the EL scheme, the BP scheme reduced the total lifting time (TLT) by 6.3% and mitigated the TLT uncertainty (the gap between the maximum and minimum time values) by 20.6%. Under the BP scheme, increasing the resource inputs produces an insignificant effect in reducing TLT, i.e. increasing the number of component operators in the caulking subprocess from one to two only shortened the TLT by 3.6%, and no further time reduction was achieved as more component operators were ***/valueTo solve non-lean problems associated with prefabricated building construction, this study provides a methodological framework that can separate a typical precast wall lifting process into fine-level activities. Besides, it also identifies the pathways (including the learning effect mitigation, labor and machinery resource adjustment and activities' improvement) to reducing TLT and its uncertainty.

Modeling of Ventilation's Influence on Energy Consumption in Multi-cylinder Dryer Section Part 2: simulations and Applications

Ventilation system affects the water evaporation rate, energy consumption and the paper quality, which is considered as the largest optimization potential part of multi-cylinder dryer section. In this paper, energy consumption models of multi-cylinder dryer section are constructed by combining energy modules of moisture evaporation, heat recovery system, air heaters, supply air and exhaust air. Taking a corrugated paper machine as an example, ventilation system influence on the energy consumption of drying system is analyzed systematically. It is concluded that reducing the temperature of supply air and increasing exhaust humidity as much as possible to save energy consumption on the premise of meeting the safety production. The increase of supply air humidity will lead to the increase of steam consumption for heating supply air, power consumption of fans, and the total steam consumption in the drying process, so the intake point of supply air should be chosen at the point with low absolute humidity. The models can predict the energy consumption of ventilation system adjustment and optimization, and provide a method for energy-saving evaluation of ventilation system technical transformation in drying process.

An electromagnetic (EM) design methodology for all metal frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with finite transmission zeros is proposed in this work. Single polarization is considered in the design, which is based on an evanescent field mechanism. An infinite 2D-periodic square-shaped metallic lattice performs the stopband behavior of the FSS, whereas H-shaped slot resonators on the sidewalls of the metallic lattice allow for the evanescent field in the desired polarization to be pushed forward in the FSS at some target passband. Finite transmission zeros next to the passband are introduced to increase the FSS selectivity using concepts from filter theory. The EM design is carried out by means of a recently proposed approach based on the electromagnetics coupling matrix. In this new methodology, not only the S parameter response is obtained out of one single full-wave simulation with the finite element method (FEM), but also the EM couplings among the EM circuit resonators. We use this electromagnetics coupling matrix to carry out an ad hoc synthesis of the FSS response directly in electromagnetics. As a result, we get a target electromagnetics coupling matrix that is used for CAD purposes. The EM-based optimization loop is guided by this target electromagnetics coupling matrix, which allows to achieve our target electrical response in very few iterations, resulting in very few FEM simulations to achieve the goal. Several design examples will illustrate the capabilities and possibilities of the proposed approach.

This work presents the design of fully metallic frequency selective surface (FSS) cascade filters through the use of a recently proposed electromagnetics coupling matrix approach. The filtering structure consists of a cascade of unit cells with resonators in z direction, and a periodic repetition of the structure in the x-y direction. The fully metallic cascade unit cell can be analyzed as a coupled resonator electromagnetic (EM) circuit, where evanescent fields are pushed forward by properly designed EM resonators. This coupled resonator FSS structure is especially suitable for an EM coupling matrix characterization, where all the EM couplings among resonators can be easily identified, providing valuable design information in the different parameters for the final performance of the FSS.

Conceptual design and optimization of a novel hydrogen liquefaction process based on helium expansion cycle integrating with mixed refrigerant pre-cooling

Due to the safety of operation and the development of high-efficiency helium refrigerators, the development of helium refrigeration cycles in hydrogen liquefaction is continuously promoted. To reduce the energy consumption and exergy loss of this energy-intensive process, a novel hydrogen liquefaction process integrating with mixed refrigerant (MR) pre-cooling is simulated by Aspen HYSYS and optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) to improve performance under the premise of safe production and multi-faceted analyzed based on the helium expansion refrigeration cycle. A new MR with reasonable composition and ratio is used in the pre-cooling cycle to improve the matching of heat transfer curves. Energy, exergy and economic analyses are applied to evaluate the liquefaction process, and horizontal comparison is also used to evaluate the rationality and superiority of the process design. The output of 5 t/d of liquid hydrogen (21.7 K, 1.5 bar) can be achieved and the overall specific energy consumption (SEC), exergy efficiency (EXE) and coefficient of performance (COP) are 9.703 kWh/kg LH2, 39.1%, and 0.1333, respectively. Computational Fluid Dynamics is used to assess the thermal(heat transfer)performances of an automobile engine considering different grille opening and closing *** this purpose the entire vehicle is modelled and three fundamental aspects are examined,namely,the open area of the air intake grille,the position of the upper and lower grilles and their *** results show that the opening area and position of the grille have some influence also on the aerodynamic characteristics of the *** an increase in the opening angle of the grille,the CD(Drag Coefficient)value of the whole vehicle becomes *** the air intake grille of the car is fully open or closed,the CD value is 0.35434 or 0.31777,respectively,that is,the flow resistance in the engine compartment accounts for 10.32%of the CD value for the whole automobile.

In this work, we explore the EM response of Drude-like plasma scatterers with diverse geometries and physical configurations, aiming to design a phase-gradient reconfigurable metasurface. We use the Reduced-Basis Method (RBM) to obtain a reduced order model (ROM) of Maxwell's equations parametrized only by the plasma frequency of the considered scatterer. We take advantage of the efficiency and reliability of RBM to study the propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave through several types of plasma-based metasurfaces, analyzing different operating conditions and structural configurations. © 2025 European Association on Antennas and Propagation.
