This paper presents our new developed FOCAP tool (Framework for optimizing the Computer Architecture Performance) in order to gain a better understanding and familiarity of the students with new advanced learning methods and tools in the Microarchitecture simulation and optimization. At this stage, FOCAP allows a mono-objective automatic design space exploration (DSE) of a superscalar processor by varying several architectural parameters. Such DSE tools are very useful, since it is impossible to simulate all the configurations of a highly parameterized microarchitecture. Therefore, heuristic methods, local search algorithms and advanced machine learning methods are good candidates to find near-optimal configurations by evaluating a reduced number of configurations from the huge design space. Our application falls in the European trend of Framework projects that aim expanding research towards the advanced education field using modern learning technologies. The FOCAP tool facilitates the comprehending of theoretical questions, thus allowing students to feel more confident when studying microarchitecture optimization and DSE-related issues.

This paper briefly describes the role and function of CATIA and VERICUT, and combining this two software as optimization platform built collect modeling, machining, simulation and optimization in one of the CNC machining chain. Through the VERICUT to simulate and optimize the NC program, examples demonstrate the rationality of optimization, avoid the collision, interference and had cut in the production and processing, improve the efficiency in the use of CNC machine.

A Decomposition Approach for Sequencing Mixed-Model Two-Sided Assembly Line with Stochastic Processing Time

This study tackles the challenge of optimizing mixed-model two-sided assembly lines, where task processing times are uncertain. The objective is to reduce the expected cycle time the average time to complete one product across the assembly line. Given the complexity of assessing objectives amidst stochastic conditions, we formulate the problem as a simulation optimization problem. We introduce a strategic decomposition method that breaks down the core problem into two discrete sub-tasks: allocating tasks to respective work-stations, and determining the sequence of tasks at each station. The decomposition framework systematically partitions the solution space, though it does not ensure a global optimum, it can efficiently guide the search towards a high-quality near-optimal solution with a practical time frame. Based on this framework, we develop a novel simulation-optimization algorithm, termed the Decomposition Approach with Harmony Search (DAHS), which incorporates a harmony search heuristic to effectively navigate the partitioned solution space. Additionally, we implement two innovative strategies to improve the search and simulation procedures. Numerical experiments reveal that our DAHS algorithm outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of solution quality and computational efficiency.

Research on Microclimate optimization of Traditional Residential Buildings in Central Anhui Based on Humid and Hot Climate Characteristics and Regional Architectural Features

This study examines how building space, materials, and structure affect the microclimate of Liu Tong Xinglongzhuang in central Anhui, known for its hot, humid climate and distinct architecture. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, including field monitoring, PHOENICS simulation, and Ladybug Tools, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Building materials: wood reduces indoor temperature;a glass roof over the patio lowers temperature and improves wind speed;and reducing tile area decreases solar radiation. (2) Building space: optimal comfort in stairwells is achieved with a length-to-width ratio of 1.5:1 and height-to-width ratio of 2:1;courtyards are most comfortable with a length-to-width ratio of 2.5:1 and height-to-width ratio of 1.5:1;walk-through halls are optimal with a length-to-width ratio of 2:1 and height-to-width ratio of 1.5:1;and wings achieve the highest comfort with a length-to-width ratio of 2.5:1 and height-to-width ratio of 1.5:1. (3) Building structure: optimal wind speed and temperature are achieved with specific window height-to-width ratios of 1:1 for exterior and 1.5:1 for interior windows;the lowest temperatures occur at 2:1 ratios;hexagonal exterior and circular interior windows maximize wind speed and temperature reduction;and smaller exterior door openings lower indoor temperatures and are best achieved with an interior door ratio of 2:1. These findings offer valuable data and methods for optimizing the microclimate of traditional houses, with significant practical implications.

With the expansion of natural gas pipelines into larger networks, there is a growing concern regarding energy consumption in the operations of pipeline systems. However, the intricate network structure and hydraulic properties pose challenges for operation optimization. In this paper, a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming model is proposed to optimize the steady-state operation of natural gas pipeline network, aiming to minimize the energy consumption of compressor units. The model incorporates constraints related to flow direction, flow balance, pressure drop in pipeline sections, and pressure increase at compressor stations. To solve the complex nonlinear model efficiently, a stochastic optimization algorithm that integrates particle swarm optimization and high-fidelity simulation is proposed. The case study is conducted on a large-scale natural gas pipeline network consisting of forty-three pipeline sections and four compressor stations. The optimal operation scheme is calculated, and the outlet pressures of each compressor are determined. The results demonstrate that the stochastic optimization algorithm proposed in this paper can reduce energy consumption by 21.23 % at most and 19.77 % on average during pipeline operation, which can provide guidance for the operation management of large-scale natural gas pipeline network.

In this paper, we study the problem of scheduling robotized tasks in the context of Agriculture 4.0. The objective is to optimize the treatment tasks of plants against an evolving disease (mildew) within a greenhouse. The treatment is performed using a type-C ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) by an UV-Robot. We propose a semi-dynamic simulation-optimization approach based on a Markovian model of the disease behavior in the greenhouse. Formation flying reconfiguration manoeuvres via environmental forces in highly elliptical orbits

A study on reconfiguration manoevres applied to a tetrahedral formation in highly elliptical orbits is proposed, by using a propellantless solution. The manoeuvring strategy consists in exploiting certain environmental forces, specifically those provided by solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag, by actively controlling the satellites? attitudes. Through inverse dynamics particle swarm optimization the optimal attitudes required for the manoeuvres are evaluated, whereas the configuration?s evolution is simulated by a high-fidelity orbital simulator. The goal of the reconfiguration problem is to find an optimal control in order for the four spacecraft to reach a desired configuration in a specified portion of orbit, where the desired configuration is evaluated by a shape and size geometric parameter. By increasing the manoeuvring time and the satellites? area to mass ratio, all the case studies considered are successfully verified. ? 2020 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new model order reduction strategy based on the reduced-basis method is carried out in this work. Starting off from time-harmonic Maxwell's equations, a new representation of the original Maxwell system is developed. First, a reduced basis approximation allows for a reduced-order representation of electrodynamics in the frequency band of interest. As a result, the Kurokawa series representation for electromagnetics turns pretty much into a finite sum of dominant eigenresonances, which stand upon global eigenmodes of the Maxwell system. This gives rise to a linear dynamical system in electromagnetics and, after a proper arrangement, provides extremely useful physical information from which an electrical engineer can get actionable design insights. In this work, we use computational electromagnetics as an actual design tool and several realistic design applications will be considered during the presentation.

Electromagnetics today underpins all modern information and communication technologies. Increasing deployment of telecommunication services is urging RF industry to carry out better and better electrical designs, where a single device is no longer conceived to perform a single functionality, but rather multiple tasks at the same time. Unfortunately, much electrical design activity is still based on brute-force computational simulations to predict the actual physical behavior of electromagnetic devices. These time-consuming simulations are repeated, changing the device characteristics until satisfying stricter specifications of emerging information and communications technologies (5G and IoT). In our work we use computational electromagnetics as an actual design tool, rather than just an analysis one. This can be achieved by shriking computational electromagnetics into a simple parameterized equivalent circuit form, from which an electrical engineer can get actionable design insights.

Spring protection and sustainable management of groundwater resources in a spring field

Springs are the natural discharge points of groundwater. They are of considerable value for drinking water supply and some springs are of historical and tourism value. However, increasing industrial and urban expansion has led to serious problems of overdraft of groundwater resources, which in turn had caused the disappearance of springs globally. Thus, the protection of springs while at the same time allowing for the use of local groundwater resources is an important task of water resources management. In this study, we propose a new multi-objective simulation and optimization (S/O) model to find an optimal extraction strategy which balances the competitive relationship between spring outflow and groundwater extraction. In the newly developed model, the extraction rates of different groundwater wells are taken as the decision variables, and maximization of groundwater extraction and maximization of spring outflow are taken as the two objective functions. Baotu Spring which is located in northern China has been famous since the Shang Dynasty (1600 BCE). However, Baotu Spring has been drying up since the 1990s due to over extraction of the local groundwater. Thus, we take Baotu Spring as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the newly developed model. Simultaneously, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA), the multi-objective fast harmony search algorithm (MOFHS) which is coupled with the commonly used groundwater flow code MODFLOW, is adopted to search the Pareto optimal solutions (the optimal extraction strategies). The optimization results of Baotu Spring field during the management period from July 2013 to June 2014 show that more groundwater resources could be extracted without threatening the sustainable outflow of Baotu Spring and Black Tiger Spring.
