Statistical Performance of the Effective-Number-of-Bit Estimators Provided by the sine-fitting algorithms

This paper analyzes the statistical performance of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) effective-number-of-bit (ENOB) estimators provided by sine-fitting algorithms. Accurate expressions for the estimator bias and standard deviation that hold regardless of the overall ADC output noise characteristics are derived. These expressions are then particularized for ADC output noise composed of tones (both harmonics and spurious tones) and additive white noise. Two specific cases of ideal ADCs and ADCs affected by harmonics, spurious tones, and additive white Gaussian noise are also analyzed. In particular, it is shown that, for values of the number of acquired samples commonly used in ADC testing practice, the sine-fitting ENOB estimators are statistically optimal since they are almost Gaussian, unbiased, and efficient. The accuracies of all the derived expressions are verified through both computer simulations and experimental results.

The development and implementation of a digital-signal-processor (DSP)-based portable impedance-measurement instrument is described. The circuit sinewave stimulus is generated by the device using a direct digital synthesizer at the desired measurement frequency. The sine is applied to a reference impedance in series with the unknown impedance. Two analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) acquire multiple samples of the two sine voltages, which are transmitted to the DSP. sine-fitting algorithms determine the sine amplitudes, phases, dc components, and frequency. With these values and the reference-impedance values, the unknown impedance amplitude and phase are determined. Amplifiers, which are included in the device, extend the ADCs' input range, while a digital potentiometer enables the adjustment of the reference impedance to improve accuracy.

In this paper, an in-depth analysis of the implementation issues of sine-fitting algorithms in systems with 32-bit floating point representation is presented. The results obtained in 32-bit systems are compared with the ones obtained in 64-bit floating point representation systems. The four-parameter sine-fitting is an iterative algorithm and the criterion used to detect convergence is even more crucial in 32-bit systems. A modification of the traditional implementation is used to, in some situations, reduce the number of iterations required to converge without compromising the final accuracy or precision of the estimated parameters. It is shown that, as the number of samples increases, the limitations of the 32-bit systems clearly limit the use of the sine-fitting algorithms. Nevertheless, the number of samples at which this effect is detected is much higher than the number of samples usually used so far in stand-alone instrumentation systems. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. sine-fitting algorithms are very accurate methods to estimate the parameters (amplitude, phase, frequency and DC component) of a digitized sinusoidal signal. In this paper, the standardized algorithms are improved, producing a new algorithm to estimate the sinewave parameters of two acquired sine signals sharing a common frequency. This new algorithm can be used for example in impedance measurements or in the accurate frequency characterization of linear systems by measuring its input and Output and varying the input signal frequency. This paper describes a new method for detection of some power quality (PQ) disturbances, namely transients and waveform distortions. The proposed algorithm is based on a modified version of the four-parameter sine-fitting algorithm. The sine-fitting algorithm is used to estimate the parameters of the power system's voltage signal's fundamental and to extract the transient component of the voltage. The performance of the proposed method is compared with previously developed algorithm and with two commercial PQ analyzers.

This paper deals with a procedure for high-accuracy fast estimation of the effective number of bits (ENOB) of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). According to this procedure the ADC output sine-wave parameters are determined through the interpolated discrete Fourier transform (IpDFT) method. One criterion for the selection of the window that will be used in the IpDFT method is provided. In addition, mathematical expressions for the accuracy of both the sine-fitting procedure based on the IpDFT method and the proposed ENOB estimation method are derived, and a lower bound on the number of acquired samples that ensures accurate ENOB estimates with a high confidence level is proposed. In particular, it is proved that the uncertainty of the proposed ENOB estimation procedure is almost the same as the theoretical lower bound for the variance of any unbiased ENOB estimator. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed procedure and the algorithms suggested in the existing standards for ADCs testing are compared through both computer simulations and experimental results. In addition, the processing times required by each considered method are compared, therefore proving the advantage of the proposed procedure in terms of the required computational burden.
