An algebraic method of solution of a water wave scattering problem involving an asymmetrical trench

The problem of propagation of obliquely incident surface water waves involving an asymmetric rectangular trench in a channel of finite depth is examined for its solution. The problem under consideration leads to multiple series relations involving trigonometric functions. Instead of converting these relations into systems of integral equations, direct algebraic approaches are utilized and the corresponding solutions are obtained approximately, by way of solving the reduced system of over-determined algebraic equations. The system of over-determined algebraic equations are solved with the aid of the well-known algebraic approaches "Least square" (LS) and "singular value decomposition" (SVD) methods. The presently determined results involving the reflection and transmission coefficients related to the scattering problem under consideration, agree very well, with the known results obtained recently, where integral equations and their approximate numerical solutions were determined. The effect of system of parameters on hydrodynamics quantities such as reflection and transmission coefficients, wave elevation are analysed and shown through tables and graphs. The present algebraic methods appear to be very direct and quick. A similar techniques are found to be applicable to the problem of scattering of surface water waves by any finite number of asymmetrical placed rectangular trenches. The problem of a pair of asymmetrical trenches is under progress. The energy balance relation for the given problem is derived and used to check the accuracy of numerical results. Some important results such as wave elevation profiles, the singularity behaviour of the flow near trench edges are investigated and analyzed through graphs.

Two basic dual trigonometric series relations involving a countable infinite number of unknowns are considered for the determination of the unknowns. The numerical values of the unknowns are determined with the help of the methods of algebraic least-squares approximation and singular value decomposition. The dual trigonometric series and the corresponding functions are compared with the existing results. The errors are also computed to show the efficiency of these methods. The study indicates that the method of algebraic least squares is more straightforward, simpler and computationally more efficient as compared to the available methods.

The development of a smart grid electricity distribution network with advanced technology in smart metering will produce a massive amount of data. However, the limitation in communication network bandwidth makes it hard to transmit these data to the control center. Data compression is one of the best solutions to overcome this limitation. This study presents the use of multiresolution matrix factorisation (MMF) as a data compression technique for a smart distribution system. MMF will compress a data matrix into a core matrix with lower dimension via a series of orthogonal transformations. Experimental results gained from this study show that MMF is applicable in compressing large size data into lower dimension matrix with low error rates and high in speed. The MMF compression technique is able to reduce the volume of data to be transmitted through the communication network and thus save the bandwidth. Besides, MMF compression performs faster than the singular value decomposition method, especially with large size matrix. Findings from this study prove that MMF can serve as an alternative data compression technique for the smart distribution system, with a potential for an online application due to the high speed and high accuracy of the algorithm.

Excitation of Oxygen Ion Cyclotron Harmonic Waves in the Inner Magnetosphere: Hybrid Simulations

Hybrid simulations are carried out to investigate the excitation of oxygen ion cyclotron harmonic waves observed in the inner magnetosphere. The simulations show that these waves can be excited by energetic oxygen ions of a ring-like velocity distribution. The excited waves have properties consistent with observations, but their nearly perpendicular propagation disagrees with the quasi-parallel propagation from the singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis reported earlier. By performing the same SVD analysis on the simulated waves in a three-dimensional simulation, it is demonstrated that the superposition of multiple waves with different azimuthal angles can cause the commonly used SVD analysis of wave propagation to yield incorrectly small wave normal angles. In addition, the results show that the enhanced waves scatter oxygen ions mainly along v(perpendicular to) through cyclotron resonance. The waves may also scatter energetic radiation belt electrons through bounce resonance and transit time scattering, similar to fast magnetosonic waves.

In this study, we examined the effect of different types of behavioral strategy on performance as well as on behavior in three types of different information representation method such as real task environment, VR-based task environment, and MR-based task environment in order to identify some features that enable to be applied for performance-based/behavioral-based measurement for the characterization of the SoE and its sub-components. As the results, we found that there was a significant difference in task performance such as time completion time, and parameter of time-to-collision distribution, as well as on user behavior such as decomposed motion data.

For the linear stochastic descriptor system with uncorrelated noises, the self-tuning reduced-order smoothing problem is solved, when the noise variances of the process noise and measurement noise are unknown. 'the consistent estimates of these unknown noise variances are obtained by applying the correlation method, and the optimal Kalman reduced-order smoother is obtained based on the singular value decomposition method and the classical Kalman filtering theory. Then substituting these consistent estimates of unknown noise variances into the optimal reduced-order Kalman smoother yields the self-tuning reduced-order smoother and the smoothing error variance. A example of singular system verities the effectiveness.

Interplay of irreversible reactions and deformation: a case of hydrofracturing in the rodingite-serpentinite system

The interplay of irreversible reactions and deformation during regional metamorphism was analyzed in the reaction zones between rodingite and serpentinite. Rodingites are leucocratic rocks found commonly in serpentinites and are considered metasomatic products of Ca-rich fluid. Rodingites occur ubiquitously in serpentinite from the Nomo metamorphic rocks, western Kyushu, a Cretaceous accretionary complex of greenschist to epidote-amphibolite facies condition. We used the singular value decomposition (SVD) method to analyze rodingitization reactions based on mineral compositions of a rodingite sample and a possible protolith (clinopyroxene gabbro). The resultant reaction implied that the rodingite was formed due to the addition of considerable amounts of CaO and H2O to the protolith, whereas other components such as SiO2, AF (Al2O3+ Fe2O3), and FM (FeO + MgO) were conserved. The Nomo rodingites are associated with reaction zones between serpentinite. A careful study on the compositional variations of diopside and chlorite in the rodingite, serpentinite, and the reaction zones between them showed a disequilibrium crystallization of diopside in the reaction zone. Diopside shows a serrated variation in composition across the reaction zone together with disequilibrium signature within grains (composite grain consisting of Fe-rich and Fe-poor parts). These features clearly indicate that diopside crystallized in a relatively short period compared to the metamorphism by irreversible reactions. Another conspicuous feature is that perovskite occurs in some reaction zones, whereas titanite is common in rodingites;this indicates that the reaction zone is poorer in SiO2. The tremolite veins are typically derived from the reaction zone into serpentinite;showing this is a good example of hydrofracturing associated with the formation of the reaction zone. All the reactions obtained by the SVD method that contribute to the formation of the reaction zones consumed CaO and evolved H2O

Two efficient procedures to correct the positioning errors in the plane-polar scanning

Two techniques to effectively compensate known positioning errors in a plane-polar near-field-far-field (NF-FF) transformation, using a minimum number of NF data and adopting an oblate ellipsoid to shape the considered antenna, are proposed and validated through experimental proofs. The former makes use of the singular value decomposition method to recover the voltage samples which would be acquired by the probe at the points fixed by the non-redundant sampling representation from the collected positioning error affected ones, whereas the latter employs an iterative scheme. The NF data required by the classical NF-FF transformation with plane-rectangular scanning are then efficiently evaluated via a two-dimensional optimal sampling interpolation formula. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is assessed by experimental tests performed at the Antenna Characterisation Lab of the University of Salerno.
